Bill Lange replied to Tempest's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
All of this chatter has got me interested in setting up a dial-up and/or telnet ATASCII BBS! -

Best has them for $10, but I think they have a minimum order size. http://best-electronics-ca.com/8-bit_.htm#SIO2 -

I'm glad you chimed in. I was about to go set it up to confirm that the Atari Modem cable is the right cable. -

Connecting to a BBS Without a Phone Line?

In theory, I believe the 850 can. In practice, I'd start at 1200 or 2400 to get it working and then work your way up. -

If you want to setup and test a dial up BBS on one computer and test it from another computer without having two phone lines ... or any phone lines for that matter, I have another gadget called a Viking DLE-200B with simulates the telephone system with dial tone an everything. Its a fun little gadget for testing or exhibiting. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Viking-DLE-200B-2-Way-Line-Simulator-Emulator-DLE200B-NEW-/271125729675?hash=item3f205a518b:g:ccMAAOSwa81XRh8T Bill -

Connecting to a BBS Without a Phone Line?

The Lantronix device has a jack on one side that looks like a Hayes Modem (serial) jack. The other side has an Ethernet (10BaseT) jack to plug in a CAT5 cable from your router. The Lantronix device then lets you use 'modem commands' to 'dial' sites on the internet. http://www.ebay.com/itm/LANTRONIX-UDS-10-UDS-10-02-with-AC-Adapter-/292035061798?hash=item43fea56826:g:h5IAAOSwa~BYXFjs I just looked for mine, but couldn't find it. You can use a device by Lantronix to connect your 850 to your internet connection. Then use your favorite terminal program to 'dial' a telnet BBS. https://www.lantronix.com/products/uds-10/ There is some additional info on the Antic Podcast: http://ataripodcast.libsyn.com/antic-episode-40-bbsing Bill -
Tempest Elite coming soon to Atari 8-bit

I'm interested in one as well. I already have a Atari driving controller that I want to try with it! Bill -
Any one have the users manual for a Hayes...
Bill Lange replied to DavidMil's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I also have the 1200 manual, but not the 300. Bill -
I put the Carina 1.1 bits up on achive.org. I extracted the one readme.doc file from the .atr file and made a .pdf of it and added it to the archive. If anyone comes up with the hard copy manual, I'll add that as well. https://archive.org/details/CarinaBBS1.1A Bill

I went to Eros/Arbest with enough credits to max out any piece of equipment that wasn't already at the highest tech level, so no issues. I updated the doc on archive.org. Bill

Bringing the 1027 printer back from the dead
Bill Lange replied to electronizer's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
How is this project moving along .... ? -
I believe both version 1.2 and 1.3 can use multiple drives, but I use 1.3 exclusively, so can not confirm at this time. SPOILER ALERT (for a 30 year old game) Message received in 107-77-xxx, right after I visited my last unvisited stellar system (not sure if this was a trigger or not) and ran my hi def scanner while I was next to the Benison dry dock in the Zhisou (16,7,13) system. Message itself was from leader of Stowe as well with similar content. Bill

I finally received a subspace message yesterday. I posted it on the Omnitrend Universe Facebook page, but blacked out the text. I'm trying to figure out the mining process without having all my equipment destroyed. https://www.facebook.com/groups/435419473491677 Bill

Here is Carina II manual: https://archive.org/details/CarinaIIBBSManual. No luck finding Carina I manual yet. Bill

I put it on archive.org here: https://archive.org/details/OmnitrendUniverseQuickStart Bill

David, Can I put your quick start guide on Archive.org so I can create a link to it? Bill
-
In the original Atari version, you had to calculate the minimum orbits. In later versions, with the smaller, cheaper manual, the minimum orbits are included in the planet list appendix. Bill

To help encourage someone, anyone, to finish this game, I created a Omnitrend's Universe group on Facebook. I finally realized a mistake that I've been making. Whenever I got to the point that I had enough credits to make my way to Arbest and outfit my ship with the best equipment, I always got stuck. It seems, to me anyway, that in the manual under System 3 - Accumulators, part 16 implies that you can only have 3 installed. I'd always get stuck and never have enough energy to do anything else.
-
In all of my attempts at playing this game, I have never even seen a sub space radio message! That is not me behind the poster, that is VIstaPrint.com "print preview". It is the easiest was for me to capture the 'scale' of the document. Bill
-
So I made a 24x36 poster of Universe. Let me know what you think.

I just wrote/posted a blog post and mentioned your Quick Start Guide ... which was the reason for the necro-bump. http://atari8bitads.blogspot.com/2017/02/omnitrends-universe.html Bill
