I love the ST! There will be more games after this one. I wanted the encounter screen to be simple and not crowded so I went for a basic look with just the sprites to keep things clean. I tried adding walls, etc., but it looks too busy for my tastes. Good point on the sprites; I've been debating on changing the sprites' perspectives since I started the project. Initially I was going for that abstract Japanese RPG look (some earlier Japanese RPGs used this strange perspective with the sprites and walls) but I'll experiment and see what I come up with. I'm sure changing the perspective will make them fit better as you said. Edit: I've decided to redraw the sprites to fit the environment better. I'll post new screenshots soon when I am done!

Cohen is a good suggestion, but I'd go with the luggage as a chest. Anyhow - excellent retrogeek, keep on with the work. I still lament losing the source/last build of my 95% complete Dark Tower ST game. Thanks, Remo! I already have a few similiar ideas for chests -- how do random attacking chests sound? There will be random chests throughout the dungeon that will spring to life with big, nashing teeth, and the hero will have to kill them to get to the contents inside.
-
Cohen the Barbarian, eh? That's an idea! He's a cool character. Having party members isn't out of the question so keep your eyes open for updates! I'm really looking forward to releasing my first demo; I can't wait!

Here is a screenshot to give everyone an idea of how the turn-based combat system works:
-
Good idea! If I may add a scenario using your suggestions: someone who travels light would be given a different set of challenges, like disarming chests or deactivating a trap with a special tool. A person with warrior stats may have to pull a series of levers to continue on, while someone that uses magic could cast a spell to make passing the trap easier. I love the suggestions! Keep them coming!

I started a thread about my first ST game in the homebrew section; click on the Halls of Zoor link in my sig to be sent to that thread.
-
I just added a poll asking some questions about the way Halls should play; your input is appreciated!
-
That's right; I have finally started on my first homebrew for the ST line of computers. Halls of Zoor is a dungeon romp where the player traverses the ancient Halls of Zoor in search of treasure. Adventurers prior have ventured into these halls and have perished in seek of riches. As the main character (a knight) you are pitted against traps, creatures, and puzzle solving. Some puzzles include switch traps, color arrangement, and item retrieval to open certain areas. I already have the first few levels mapped out and programming has already begun on the game. I'm still undecided on how many levels will be available to the player or whether there will be upgradeable weapons and armor. I've been debating on how the battle sequences should work. At first I considered more of a Zelda action approach, but I may settle on more of a turn-based system when a creature encounter occurs. I have designed a separate battle screen when a creature attacks; the idea is to have the creature on one end and the player on the other, selecting attacks from a menu and casting potions and magic. I'm programming this title for fellow Atarians to enjoy so give me SOME input on how this should play. A demo will eventually be available on my website which can be found in my sig. Once the game is completed, it will be available for download at the same web address. A manual in PDF format will also accompany the game. Any updates to this title will also be there for download. I hope this garners some interest! I'm having a blast designing / drawing/ programming it! Some screens:

Atari ST system on new hardware?
retrogeek replied to sorcerio's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Can these still be purchased? Edit: wait, never mind... I thought the entire site was written in German. It looks like these machines were discontinued in the early 21st century. Crap! Well I stand corrected; it’s a crying shame you can’t buy these anymore. -
Atari ST system on new hardware?
retrogeek replied to sorcerio's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
There isn't one to say it plainly... developing a new Atari ST computer using current hardware wouldn't be as easy as you might think. First you have to get the rights to the copyright (which I am sure still exists somewhere), then you have to establish R&D and that would take countless hours of engineering time and planning. Plus the funds required to make this project a reality would be astronomical; then you have to convince the general public -- which is weaned on PC clones -- that this new computer (which wouldn't even run Windoze or any popular applications) is the better choice. You can argue that developers could be talked into developing for the system, but how many do you think will jump on board when billions of people already purchase PC software? I would love to see a modern Atari ST computer; heck, I'd buy one! I think the idea of a new ST computer is a great one but it wouldn't be an ST if it ran on PC components with a Pentium processor; it wouldn't be the same if you know what I mean. -

Article comparing the Wii shovelware to the 2600 crash of 1983
retrogeek replied to ComputerSpaceFan's topic in Atari 2600
How can they honestly compare the market in 1983 to the market of today? Atari owned the industry in 1983 and most companies banked on Atari's success. Today the industry has more than one major player -- there is Microsoft with inexhaustible finances, Sony with their hands in just about every market imaginable, and Nintendo who has been flying high on handheld sales for decades. Even if WII shovelware buried the WII it would hardly affect Microsoft and Sony. Don't forget that at the time of the crash Atari was focused primarily on games and had nothing to fall back on if something happened. In 2008 Microsoft has a multitude of facets available to fund their products (i.e. Windoze OS, their business software packages, etc) and Sony receives income from DVD players, TVs, Stereos, the PSP, car stereos, and who knows what else. The crash of 1983 is far from happening and I doubt seriously that shovelware will be the death of the industry. Someone has already mentioned the shovelware that suffocated the PS1 at the end of its lifespan and that did nothing to crash the market. People are far more informed today then they were in 1983, plus with the economy being as unstable as it is, people are less likely to chance a $50 purchase without knowing what they are getting into first. In my opinion, that article was a waste of bandwidth. It’s based on pure conjecture and nothing else. -
I was given one at Toys R Us when I pre-ordered Wii Fitness; basically it describes how Wii Fitness works. It looks fun! Someone has already mentioned this but the Wii board would be perfect for a skiing / snowboarding game.
-
I'm not sure if Wii Fitness will be easy to find on launch (in my area anyway). Most of the stores in my location are claiming that pre-orders are exceeding the allotted amounts being shipped in May.
-
I have a standard back injury but I can only imagine the pain you must experience. I don't really consider Wii Fitness a game (to answer another post in this one) but to each his own! Damn, they're charging $138usd for Wii Fitness over in the UK?
-
I suffer from a bad back due to a fall I took last winter. I've been to the doctor about my on-going pain, and during a prior visit, she recommended a Wii to complement the exercise plan that I am already on. During my last doctor visit, (which was about a week ago) I mentioned Wii fitness and strangely enough she knew all about it. She claims the Yoga programs that come with Wii Fitness will help strengthen my back muscles and ultimately reduce the pain the injury causes. With this recommendation, I drove down to a local Toys R Us and pre-ordered Wii Fitness for the Nintendo Wii. It's kind of pricey at $89.99 but if it can help my back then I am all for spending $90 for this peripheral. I'm just wondering if anyone else is planning on pre-ordering / purchasing Wii Fitness for the Wii. It seems pretty decent!
-
My local Best Buy had 50 Wii systems over the weekend... but they didn't last very long! I was also in the area so I decided to stop by Gamestop (shudder) and they had 20 brand-new Wii systems in stock (plus 2 used ones). Wii Fitness may cause another shortage of systems so grab a Wii while you still can!

To validate the points we made in the other GTA4 thread... Edit: This guy hasn't even played the game yet and they're blaming it on GTA 4.

GTA IV: I'm Not Getting it, How About You?
retrogeek replied to MetalSlime23's topic in Modern Console Discussion
What, be a parent and assume responsibility for your own kids? Ridiculous! So true! They'd rather have the game companies do it for them. -
GTA IV: I'm Not Getting it, How About You?
retrogeek replied to MetalSlime23's topic in Modern Console Discussion
There isn't any nudity but you get a close-up of your character (from the driver side of the car) and the hooker's head as it bobs fiercely. Parent groups are going bonkers over this one... funny, instead of complaining about the game and raising a stink, you'd think these parents would place just as much energy into preventing their kids from playing it. Wait that would take too much effort on their part… -
US attorney Jack Thompson is a pompous ass! Games don't kill people, people kill people! He paints every fan of GTA as serial killers. Those kids would have used any popular facet available to justify their actions (even if GTA didn't exist). You can’t judge the majority on the actions of a few mentality disturbed teens that fell through the cracks.

GTA IV: I'm Not Getting it, How About You?
retrogeek replied to MetalSlime23's topic in Modern Console Discussion
Rockstar likes to exploit the rating system with the Grand Theft Auto franchise; no doubt about it! I don't care for the hookers, strip clubs, or sex scenes, but as far as mafia style games go -- GTA4 is really good. The missions are chockfull of chases, gun fights, and great cinematic scenarios and over-the-top violence. The biggest attraction to the GTA franchise (in my opinion) is the freedom the game offers to the player. Things that would undoubtedly land you in jail from 25 to life can be accomplished without any repercussions. GTA isn't for everyone; being a fan of mafia movies and games, I think Rockstar did really well with this version. I agree that some of the contents are useless filler (i.e. having sex with hookers for example -- you can tell this game is catering to horny young teens) but when you strip these useless scenarios aside, GTA4 is a solid game with plenty to keep you busy. Plus the game doesn't force you to mindlessly butcher pedestrians; you can choose to be violent but it’s not a necessity (it’s entirely up to the player). There is plenty of scripted violence but it’s no different than watching an R rated movie of similar premise. -
Lag like how? You move to the left and it takes a second to move on screen? I never had, no. Are you wireless and if so did you try and re-sync your controllers? Yep thats right! When I move it takes a second to move on the screen. I've got both wireless and wired and I get the Lag with both but I'll look into re-sync my controllers. Also check the battery life of your controllers if they're wireless. I've noticed that certain batteries are not powerful enough and they cause a momentary pause in movement when used.
