  2. The angle on the bow was usually called out by the Captain from periscope or TBT observations. This of course is a difficult estimation and took a lot of practice in order to have a properly trained eye. Clear The Bridge by Rear Admiral Richard O'Kane is a pretty good book recounting his experiences on the USS Tang. If you couldn't guess, I loved this game as well.
  3. I have to admit, I am one of the DOS XL users. It was my first DOS, got it with my Indus GT. I still like it, and I find it to be somewhat more compatible than other more advanced DOS's. I really like the new versions of SpartaDOS X (thoroughly impressed and awed by what those guys are doing with it), but, I have trouble getting the Atari Macro Assembler and its editor to work correctly with it. I also used to use AMAC when I was younger, and feel nostalgic for both it and DOS XL.
  4. One for me as well. This is fantastic.
  5. I seem to remember playing Realm of Impossibility with two players. Both had to reach the "other" side to move on to the next screen. Lots of fun.
  6. I don't think it is merely the velocity of the winds so much as it is the fact that the winds are circular in nature along with a vertical componnent. Having rapidly changing stresses on the materials along with impact from debris causes the lion share of the damage. This is just a guess though..... I live in West Kentucky, and we did not get hit too bad here. My house lost a few shingle and there are quite a few others in my area that are in the same boat. The pictures and stories on the news have been awful.
  7. I seem to remember that Visicalc can use Axlon memory expansions. I know there were others. In any case, having the Axlon mode just makes this upgrade even better and it looks like Candle is doing another masterful job here. To Candle, as others have said, thank you for all of your efforts.
  8. As for the SQL ponunciation, it all depends on where and when you learned it. Some Oracle books from the nineties gave the suggested pronunciation as sequel, and not S-Q-L. I have heard it both ways by many technical types. I have been a DBA for over ten years and use both. Just depends on my mood. Regarding the original question, those here in the states who have been in the military are probably more likely to say six five zero two or six five oh two. They will instinctively avoid sixty.
  9. I loved this game as a kid. I remember waiting 20 to 30 minutes for it to load from tape so I could play. Back then I thought the wait was worth it. Can't imagine having to wait that long for a program to load now. I whine if a program takes more than 10 or 15 seconds.....
  10. I am verry happy to report that mine came in today. Now I just have to work up the courage to attempt the install......
  11. For me, the game I would change is Blue Max. Just a minor one. I always hated it when a plane at the same altitude as me came up from behind and hit me. You had next to no chance to evade before the game was over.... Many a near perfect game ended this way. Otherwise, I loved it. Ken
  12. 1 800 3 or 4 800XLs 1 1200XL 1 130XE 3 Indus GTs 5 1050s 1 XF I always want more, but I am running out of space to hold them... Freshy
  13. This new console would need as you say a "pile of new games". Unfortunately, there is no such thing. Nor has there been for some time. BTW, has anyone noticed: A New Version of Star Raiders I think there is also a Centipede, and I thought I saw Tempest in the market on xbox live. Is this a travesty, or do you think it will be a fantastic way to bring younger people into the Atari fold? It is hard to tell from the images on the website exactly what the game will be like. Unfortunately, given my experiences with most modern games (and consoles), I don't hold out much hope. Freshy
  14. I use an S-Video cable I got off E-Bay.
  15. I had a TV PC Card for a laptop, but it was nearly unusable. Many of them add a short delay, like 1 to 3 seconds, as they record to the hard drive before they render. They do this to enable video capture and other somewhat advanced features. The net effect is that video games don't really work well. I don't think all of the TV Tuner cards do this, but many do so you should look out for that. I use an Ambrey AV-8 upscaler and it does work quite well. My 130XE has a nearly perfect picture. My 1200XL on the other hand..... http://www.ambery.com/vitoxgacoscs.html HTH Ken
  16. Would this be possible: Add an essentially locked subforum where a few designated frequent contributers can add links to what are deemed good threads in the other forums that are heavy on information and light on chatter? This way new people have a kind of FAQ with more detail than the 8-Bit FAQ floating around. I for one seem to be missing the "Competent at Searching" gene that most others have. This would eliminate a bunch of pinned topics that clutter some other forums (thankfully not this one), while still providing a concentrated source of information. I cannot even begin to fathom the amount of information hidden within these forums. I'm not saying anyone would have to sift through the existing posts, but maybe add them when they are bumped or created? Ken
  17. I have several Indus drives, and do not have the skill to make the boards, though I have looked into it, so I would be interested in a couple. Ken
  18. I had one of the Hauppauge express cards for my then new laptop. The picture was OK, but it lagged the Atari by about 3 seconds. This made it unusable for games. Typing was also kind of odd due to the delay. I ended up bying an upconverter so I could use my Atari with an LCD. Ken
  19. I know this is just a bit late, but I also would gladly pay for one of these. I had an 800 way back when, and I still like it the best..... Ken
  20. I would be interested in a PCB. I have four or five GTs, and little skill to make my own ramcharger. I am a bit of a programmer and have been reading up on Z80 assembly. I think there are a lot of software mods that could be done with these drives. Especially if they have the 64K available to work with. I downloaded TinyCAD and tried to get the schematic drawn so I could export it into another program to make the layout. But, I was never very confident that I was getting the pinouts oriented right......
  21. I have been running AtariWin 800 Plus 4.0 on a 64 Bit Vista laptop for some time now without any serious difficulties. The only problem I have run into is that every once in a great while when I shut it down, it won't start back up until I reboot the laptop. This usually happens if the Atari crashes and the Atari monitor pops up. Other than that, the video, sound, and response times all seem OK. P.S. Before anyone questions, the 64 bit is because I am writing and debugging some 64 bit code.....
  22. Forgive my lack of understanding, but....... From what I have read, it appears as though the Syncromesh utility from DOSXL uploads a patched firmware for the Indus GT that persists until it is powered off. Would it then be possible for someone with Z80 assembly knowledge to write a replacement firmware that emulates a Happy? If not, would adding a RAMCharger as described here help? Just a thought. I had an Indus GT as a kid, and I always envied those with Happy drives.... Thanks.
