  1. We seem to have seen a few old favourites updated in recent years:

    • Pacman
    • Donkey Kong
    • Mario Bros
    • Jet Set Willy
    • Missle Command

What other titles do you think might benefit from some TLC?

I would like to see Star Raiders recieve a little redux.

Given that the original game fits in about 8K there's more than room for a few embelishments.

Title screen, music, stereo sound effects?

    Multi coloured enemies pehaps.....

Whatever, I am eternally greatful to all those developers under taking this work for the added enjoyment they are bringing to everyone :)

  2. I have realised since starting this topic that I have been confusing my memory of Spectrum Star Wars with Spectrum Empire Strikes Back, which was indeed a fluid and playable game. Star wars on all of the 8 bit computers does seem to lag somewhat looking at youtube clips.

  3. I have always loved the old Star Wars vector coin op, but somewhat dissapointed with the two efforts produced for the A8, has anyone thought about a possible port from the Spectrum?

Certainly the best 8 bit version created,

Might be poissible to do Empire the same way.

    Just a thought...

  4. Well the only code I have is for the silver/hong kong unit and I only am ordering the flat drive belt

incidentally, I have a dead orange window 1010 that I would be willing to part for as a spares breakup.

mechanically it seems to work, but I get no loading tones, or any audio at all from it actually

  5. if anyone is interested in the UK, I am ordering some drive belts for the 1010, (silver window sticker), I will purchase additional belts for you if you want to share some postage

    Just a thought

I am ordering 5 at least I think,

but postage to get them here is $10

certainlly the cheapest you can buy in this country seems to be $5/£3 ish

  6. This was the most amazing project yet on the Atari in my opinion, as I have always longed for better versions of those arcade greats for the A8

I do hope we can see this completed soon, and wait for further similar projects:

    Space invaders

    Lunar Lander

    Moon Cresta

    Galaxian

    Galaga

too many to list really lol

  7. I started a thread about this ages ago

I was thinking the method could be used to great effect in a driving game, either a la Spy Hunter, or even something like Pole Position.

It sparked a bit of comment, mainly how this was technique carried over from the 2600.

But using it could produce some excellently coloured games, the like of which would really put stable mates to shame.

  8. Just thought that in the mid eighties, the A8 got kinda monochromatic cause a lot of games were ports from machines without the same features or difficulties

the use of recolouring on the PM's has never been so well used as in Activision titles though

I do agree it was where the original came from that affected the look

    not a bad thing though

playing with a 3d piccy too

    not finished

    post-6517-0-96176100-1313408957_thumb.png

gonna stop using paint and get onto GF2 i think :ponder:

karol but this Road it's 3colour registers and the 4th could be Black (on the cars).

We would have 4Players for the cars colour.

And even a 5th one if 4Missiles=4cars other colour...

    Remember that 'Road Texture' ;)

Exactly what I was getting at!

    Thankyou!!!!

  9. Atari VCS2600 Solaris:

And that something based on the 2600 version of Battlezone could work/look very good on A8:

For sure if was Activision doing the a8 version it would certainly look something like the 2600 one...

    Agree with both of these

    Especially Solaris :)

  10. and I still stand to my post dated back in 2008... and nowadays I would even say... they had not used that much because it looks "too 2600" like... ;)

    I know what you mean,

But all the games where DLI's are used, they are the most attractive and colourful, without resorting to less asthertically pleasing methods of increasing the on screen pallette

Like all things, a blend of techniques produces the best results.

I was just looking for more opportunities for the A8 to show its true colours, as in the eighties the XL and XE range suffered by an abundance of games which only used 4 coulours on screen at once!

Silly for a machine with a pallette of 256

  11. Yeah, I've never understood why more A8 games didn't use that technique - it's kind of a pain to set up the DLIs (well, it seems like a pain - I've never done it :P), but it seems like it is really worth it. Since virtually every 2600 game uses that technique, many 2600 games look better than A8 games, which is just ridiculous.

And you don't need to turn off DMA to use a kernel, you just stuff registers. ;)

Well those were my thought's exactly in starting the thread. Given that this technique has been used before, its not like it a problem needing research

  12. Hmmm... cross-posted to several forums.

Sorry fairly new here, and wasn't sure about the best way to do this

If it upsets ppl too much,...

Just noticed that there was a topic on "latest thing I got on ebay" so thought my stuff wmight be of interest.

  13. Well it had to happenWell it had to happen

My Parents are moving, so I had to get all those boxees down and decidae what to hdo with them!

I have hoarded a lot of things with the intention of lifing in a house big enough to enjoy thier continued replay value, but wherever I reside, there has never been anywhere I could indulge my memories.

So a lot of stuff is going on ebay.

My Atari Jaguar is already gone, along with Tempest 2000 and Power Drive Rally

But I currently am listing my 2600

Oh and a TV Boy II, the 126 game 2600 in a game pad

As well as all this I have a 65XE, 600xl with a 1064 attached, a 1010 and XC12, plus a 600xl which needs a bit of attention. All should have the necessary power supplies and io cables. Got 2 new boxed proline contollers too, oh and two boxes of cassettes, probably about 50 games.

Dependant on how I feel about the large number of things I have to get rid of, I might sell my 130XE, 1050 with a switchable US doubler, and 200 disks, but I am kinda thinking I might get to hold onto these :)

Anyway, just to let you know, apart from the multicart, all are on buy it now with best offer on. Any sensible offers are fine, else they are off to Retgames who have already quoted me reasonable cash exchanges on all my kit.

Oh and I'm selling a mint looking GP2X - F200, cradle and case all boxed and complete, but the console won't power up, so spares or repair

Might have other goodies along the way, we will have to see :)

    Cheers

    Matt

I word of advice from someone who knows. Hang on to as much of this as you can, because you will only end up buying it all back for more money than you sold it for.

    Good luck..

Sorry to say I will never have the room to enjoy the old hardware. Reduced to emulation most of the time. Though I have a need for a usb CX40 :)

So what is the story with this homebrew? Who made it / where did it come from?

    No Idea

its the only one I have ever seen , certainly the only one I have ever seen on ebay.

the games are selectable via two switch dials on the underside of the cartridge

not ever calaogued what's on the cart, though I guess I could if I put my mind to it

    ;)

  16. I have come to the conlusion that there are many embittered members of this forum for whom the world of home computers will always be a case of one upmanship. Why can't people see that this is an argument that will run and run. I mean there are still people at it, just that its moved onto higher ground.

I think besides being excessively weird, this thread is likely to incite the exact sort of bickering you're talking about.

    What's wrong with weird?

    I like weird

    :P

  17. Computers weren't fruit and they weren't vegitables This is just another my favorite machine is cool and your favorite machine sucks thread.

Duh! you obv didn't read the opener. I like ALL these classic machines, and I was TRYING to get that point across. Not everyone likes tomatoes, but i do! And looking at the response so far i am pleased that everyone seems to be taking this in the good humour it was intended.

If you think its dumb, fine. Go post on something else.

    :?

  18. I think you need to be more specific about the A8 since there's different ones, while the 800 may be a bit plain to look at, and maybe even the XE, I certainly wouldn't say the 600XL or 800XL's are plain to look at, they're really nice, sleak and stylish IMO.

I'd say the 800XL is a Strawberry, real nice to look at, and really nice inside.

To look at i was considering the machines AV output in terms of how pretty it is. There's little denying the art of the A8 machines, but i'm sure we'd all have liked a slightly tweaked graphics capability, or a release of the XEM.
