  1. I have never been very interested in any game system but Atari. I do have a Game Gear, but never really got into collecting for it. I've never owned anything made by Nintendo or Sony. I grew up with Atari and quit playing with it for a time when I was a teenager and switched to a PC, but then began collecting Atari stuff about 15 years ago and will probably never stop.

Up until about 2000, I made a little bit of money by buying Atari stuff at thrift stores and then selling it on Ebay. I think it was mostly to people who had a lot of disposable income during the dotcom boom. Then the dotcom bust hit, and at about the same time the thrift stores dried up. I found it was no longer worth my time selling stuff, and there wasn't anything new to buy anyway.

I haven't paid much attention to the market for about the last decade, but am now finding that the market might be a little better than I left it, and I still have a basement full of stuff. I'm going through it now, and it's kind of like Christmas. I forgot about a lot of the stuff I have. My kids are loving it. I think at the moment I'm going through it more to see what I have in my collection - and what actually works - than to see what I can sell, but eventually I'll get back to that with the extras. I at least need to sell some stuff to raise the money to buy some new Atari stuff. ;)

The funny thing is that Chase the Chuckwagon was kind of the holy grail for me at one time. My wife used to joke that she would always look for one when she visits a thrift store and surprise me with it. I finally got one on Ebay for what I thought was a good price at the time. Now that I have it, I'm not as interested in owning it as I thought I would be. I'd actually sell it if I could get at least as much as what I paid for it, but it seems I got it at as the price was still declining, and last I checked it hasn't been trending back up.

  2. If we do something like upgraded hardware and stuff like that then it wouldn't really be a 2600..now would it? No.

I could envision though much of the games being like redone in hi-res, 3d, quadraphonic sound, But they should resemble the simplistic gameplay of the original.

I say if they built a new console (never gonna happen), then perhaps the graphics could come in two flavors, the original game in low-res, and then a hi-res version styled after the original box artwork, scattered, sketched, and dreamlike, etheral.

But definitely keep the basic gameplay. I hate all those games that take like weeks and weeks to learn and months to finish.

I like these threads, they explore things that will *never* happen.

This was already done on the Jaguar, with games like Breakout 2000. :)

  3. Wouldn't that be good if Atari would build consoles again.

In today's modern age now. Mostly gaming consoles are mostly now wireless.

How awesome would this be if Atari would make a modern console, even good enough to read old 2600 game cartridges. re-make the controllers, joysticks and paddles as a wireless devices just like the PS2, Wii and the Xbox 360 consoles do!

Wouldn't that be a spin out? A man can dream of such awesome thing.

Atari did that before anyone else, actually. :) I've got a pair of remote control joysticks that I still use today.

  4. I'm using version 4.0. It came packaged with some network software for playing MULE online (which I have yet to do).

Let me also know what rev of Atari800Win you are using. I have an old version - v 4.0 and I've been playing in 5200 mode playing Pac Man for about 45 mins and I could not get any error's to occur, nor crash the emulator. During glameplay I tried slightly putting pressure on the USB cable to see if I could cause some kind of millisecond disruption of communication from the MCU to the USB Host controller, nothing.

    Curt

Is this specifically happening in Atari800WinPlus???

I have never received any errors from any emulators during gameplay like Daphne, Steem, Stella, Mess and MAME... I've only done very minimal testing on Atari800Win emulation.

I've also tested thoroughly with various online browser games using joy2key and joy2mouse and no errors have ever appeared. Keep me posted guys, I'll mess around with Atari800WinPlus a bit this weekend, see if I can reproduce the error as well. Firmware image is the same on all MCU's, so there are no revision changes and incompatibility issues from multiple firmwares, so that wouldn't be the root cause.

Since Trevor sees the issue in XP, its not a Win7 issue and I haven't even booted up Win7 yet myself. (Does work on Win2003 though)

Here is the error I get when using the Joystick. It's intermittent.

I've gotten the same error a couple of times with Windows XP. The first time, I clicked OK and it continued on. The second time, we were playing MULE, and my son pushed up on the joystick at a time when the game didn't expect it (I'm not sure whether that has anything to do with it though). The error message came up repeatedly and crashed the emulator.

  6. I don't mean to be rude, but what's video-worthy about opening up a padded envelope? Where's your channel? (YouTube?)

Mine came in today, and I will be uploading a video of the unpacking. Nice!! I really like them, and plan on doing some serious gaming with them when time allows.

They came in then I got a phone call to go out. Okay, I got out to a customer's house. I figure, this'll only take a few minutes.

I get another call, I have to go to Kid's school (happened twice!!) so I have to go there. Between trip one and two my frekkin battery blows up in my car (okay, just drama, it kicks the bucket and I am stuck). Walk to k-mart and get a very overpriced battery (I wish I had a battery holder for AA's for my car-- hey, I can make crap happen, okay??) and get going again. Can't change out the battery yet, no tools. I break out my half baked jumper cables and jump off it, get back to the shop.

    NOW Kid is scrubbing toilets.

Get back to the shop, have customers waiting, STILL can't open the package. Waiting on customers to get done. They leave.

I make a video, that I am not holding the camera for. You'll see what I mean when it gets uploaded. It'll be on my channel.

Thanks Curt!! Pet the cat for me :)

  7. It has now happened to a 2nd joystick. The stick came out while my son was using it tonight, and when I put it back in, being extra careful, it turned farther than it should have, and the bumps are now gone on it as well.

I took the first one that had this problem apart last night to look inside, and there didn't seem to be any internal damage. It looks like the bumps break off the stick rather than tearing the plastic inside the base.

Little bumps --- dude, what are you using to twist the sticks on - an airpower socket wrench??? You only have to turn the stick about 1/2" to lock it in, you don't need to go overboard turning them. If you've damaged your stick top, let me know, I'll mail you out a replacement, but relax, you don't need to go crazy. You have to really over turn them to go past the alignment slots and damage the keys at the bottom of the sticks --

    ya brute! ;-)

    Curt

Be careful when assembling the joystick. The little bumps on the bottom of the stick apparently break off fairly easy if you try to screw it in too far. (Or at least that seems to be the experience I had with one of the four I received today, unless somehow that particular stick didn't have them to begin with.)

  9. So what's the response time on it? I've seen reports here about people using various joysticks/adapters and having problems with things like Pac Man not turning corners fast enough. Does this one work as expected?

So, before this gets lost in more complaints, does anyone that's received theirs have any comments on its performance? :)

  10. LOL... I never used my 2600 once I got a Cuttle Cart 2. I only used a 7800.

Huh. I bought a Cuttle Cart years ago and forgot all about it. I guess I ought to go see if I can find it and give it a try.

I ordered an SIO2SD from someone in England a week or so ago, and am looking forward to using it on the original hardware.

I also ordered some of the USB joysticks and am looking forward to finally playing 2600 and 8-bit games on my PC without having to use the keyboard when they arrive.

  11. I used to go to local thrift stores at least weekly and buy all their Atari stuff. Unfortunately, that was 10 years ago and apparently everyone in the area already git rid of all their stuff. I haven't seen anything good in years. I checked back a few days ago, just to make sure, and found absolutely nothing.

On the positive side, I still have a bunch of the stuff I bought 10 years ago in my basement, and I've finally started going through it. It's like Christmas, and my kids are loving it. :)

  12. Everyone has been great with the support, those who've questioned, or complained or are disappointed... plain and simple - cancel your order, I don't need the BS, aggrevation or "the money for my medical bills" so cancel and take your money back and move on.

Again, I apologize for any offense. I didn't mean to come off sounding like a jerk. I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better and hope that your health continues to improve. I was simply trying to figure out how much longer I need to wait. My e-mail asking about an ETA went unanswered, so I thought this would be a good place to see what I could find out. I have no intention of canceling my order, and will try to be more patient. Thanks for the hard work. I'm really looking forward to playing MULE on the PC with my kids the way it was meant to be! :)

  13. Yes, the cable detaches from the back, just like any other USB-type device.

It's good to see people are actually starting to get them. I now have renewed hope that my money has gone to more than just paying Curt's medical bills. :)

He put a smilie at the end, so he must have been joking, but I can't find the joke in there anywhere. I would just chalk this one up to an awful sense of humor...

Sorry if that was offensive, but that's how the conversations with my wife have been going lately about the money I spent months ago, with nothing to show for it. And it's about to where it's too late to try to dispute it with my CC company if I decide to give up and try to get the money back. :(

So it sounds like people that ordered in October have received them. Any Novembers yet? Thanks!
