  1. Fair enough. I guess I'm just not used to this level of "realism" in an 8-bit space shooter. Well, you nailed the "stress factor", that's for sure. A hell of a game that I'm sure to enjoy more and get better at the more I play.
  2. So in other words, it is inaccurate collision detection, with a "storyline" to cover for it. Have any of the cracked versions fixed this irritating "feature"?
  3. I had never played this one before... one frustrating hour later, best I could manage was 5307 points, dying in sector 2.6 (?). Five ships, with gravity balls (@^#$%*$!!), back to my PAL 800 for this round. This is gonna take a lot of getting used to the speed, the unkillable aerial mines, and am I the only one who thinks the collision detection leaves a lot to be desired? I watched maybe one shot in six of mine go through a target, or have no effect on it.
  4. That just sold me! I'm definitely in for one. Maybe Flight Simulator II will be playable now.
  5. I'm digging the mode 10 demo... mode 9 is awesome for shading effects, and 11 is not without its charm. But I'm always a sucker for a large, colorful, non-constrained palette. Great work, however you slice it! Looking forward to the completed game.
  6. One last-minute improvement for me, and my final tables: Breakout......450 Progressive...997 Double........740 Cavity........569 Total........2756 Kaboom! large 2887 Kaboom! small 1583 Total.........4470
  7. Listening to the Tigers game on an old vaccuum-tube radio.. lazy Sunday afternoon.

    1. SRGilbert

      SRGilbert

To me Tiger baseball on the radio will always be Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey.

  8. Had a decent run on Kaboom! (large paddle) tonight... 2887 points.
  9. Baby steps... Breakout......450 Progressive...997 Double........740 Cavity........569 Total........2756 Kaboom! large 2089 Kaboom! small 1087
  10. Two bumps tonight: Breakout......450 Progressive...754 Double........740 Cavity........569 Total........2513 Kaboom! large 2089 Kaboom! small 677
  11. Excerpt from the instruction booklet: And for the record, I tend toward tactic (3), regardless of which variation - aiming for the left side, I seem to have better control over there.
  12. Hmmm... must've sent my latest updated scores (post #37) down the right side of the screen then... they're missing from the new tables. Seriously though, I have the exact same problem. Much better banking the ball off the left side and having trouble putting "English" on it with the bat. Still trying....
  13. A nice bump on Kaboom! (large paddles) to 1539 1802: And (barely!) cleared the first screen of bricks on standard Breakout for 450: I prefer progressive, as it's much rarer to bounce off the top of the screen and shrink the paddle in half. Breakout......450 Progressive...754 Double........531 Cavity........569 Total........2304 Kaboom! large 1802 Kaboom! small 677
  14. Crappy keyboard, awkward cartridge port, less-than-great video output, fully unsocketed motherboard. Just off the top of my head... I'm sure others can add to this list.
  15. A few modest improvements tonight: Breakout......420 Progressive...754 Double........531 Cavity........569 Total........2274 Kaboom! large 998 Kaboom! small 677 Also, I've switched to one of my 800XLs... much, much less paddle jitter than the XEGS. Still NTSC. This seems to be a common problem with the XE series.. is there a fix for it?
  16. Okay, I'll start us off. Doing it NTSC this round - I have both of these on cartridge, so it's back to the living room with the XEGS, real paddles and big-screen TV. Breakout......385 Progressive...608 Double........531 Cavity........569 Total........2093 Kaboom! large 998 Kaboom! small 453
  17. I was a big fan of the 10 PM on Sunday closings, myself... that worked out to late in the afternoon on this side of the pond, and gave a little extra time for another run at a game during waking hours.
  18. Thanks for the info... I won't worry about finding a May 1985 Antic! Also, I'll hold onto my October and November 1990 STart mags.
  19. That looks awesome! It's that kind of outside-the-box thinking that keeps these old machines fresh. Well done.
  20. Some unintentional point-mongering on FireFleet tonight bagged me 63,815 points. I made it deeper into section 2 than I had before, but kept dying in that long horizontal right after the first laser gates: Gotta remember to stay left!
  21. I had a pretty awesome score of ANTIC and STart (for free!) on my local craigslist a few years back... All of '86 and '87.. most of '88, a few '84 and '85. I think every issue of STart. I have a few doubles from '84 - March, April, July, August and December that I'd like to trade. The STart mags really don't interest me either, so they are all available (except December '90 - May '91, those included the ANTIC section) too. I'm looking for the following: 1982 or 1983 - any 1984 - May or September 1985 - any except February, March or December 1988 - June PM me if anyone's interested! I'd really like to complete my 1984.
  22. A little better at Fire Chief today - 14437 points. I saved one disk on level 4. It really is about discipline on the driving part... Looking at McKong's screenshots, I'm pretty sure it was only section 2... may have been 3, but let's say 2 to keep me honest. I'll get to 3 (again?) before this ends!
  23. 800 with Incognito... the games can be on the CF card, so I won't have to worry about sand in the floppies. Suncom TAC-2 joystick. And a proper CRT display... either a 1702 or a nice 20" Sony TV. My picks for games: Millipede - Simply incredible shooter. Intense and challenging, but not overly difficult. I always want another go at it. I'm all about puzzlers, my favorite recent ones are Dr. Mario, Marbled and Swapz. Lode Runner - I can spend hours on this, especially if I'm allowed to create my own levels. A text adventure would be an excellent way to pass the time... I'll pick Planetfall.
  24. My Atlantis cartridge works fine on my XEGS Just played a quick round! .
  25. Always fun to contribute to these serial number tracker threads... Mine's A1 83 5237378. Atari Corp model, no expansion port. Picked it up at a thrift store a few years back.
