  1. Jumping in late on this one - I own multiple MIDI enabled keyboards / synths, and would love to do something with my Atari. What are you using as the primary interface between the Atari and the keyboard? I've seen SIO2MIDI builds, but it's quite confusing because you need some kind of software to run it. I'm slow to start, but a quick learner. What is the "bill of materials" needed to connect and sequence a MIDI keyboard with an Atari 8-bit computer? I know all about MIDIMate - that's more or less unobtanium...what is the most up to date way to do this? Great stuff!!!
  2. Outside of what we called the "phone companies" (AT&T, et al), no other company has had a bigger influence in my life than Atari. That the brand is still recognized today is a testament to its greatness.

  4. Same here - did mostly BASIC with Atari, some very minor Assembly coding. I can program C / C++ (did a Master's in Software Engineering), but I'm in Marketing. I haven't coded in at least 20 years, and I wasn't good when I was proficient. Goal was always to make games, this kind of stuff is inspirational and helps to motivate...I just need to learn more. Good luck and also congrats to OP, well done!

  7. Always loved Bill Williams - the water and the kiss in Salmon Run impressed me, but the cat and dog sounds in Alley Cat were over the top. I assumed the grunting people noise was a digitized sound, but the other stuff seemed to be generated...not sure. Cool nonetheless, he's a legend to me!!
  8. I own an old Dynacord P20 digital drum brain that powers on, but isn't operating properly. It seems to never initialize or get past the power / LED lights going on. I attempted to have it serviced by a reputable synthesizer repair / restoration company but since they didn't have schematics, there wasn't much they could do. Through YouTube I was able to find another person with the same unit, similar problem. He was intent on fixing it and had success replacing a 6821P chip. He told me that these were used a lot in the Atari 8-bit computer models and/or some of the video games, something I was unaware of. Some Google searches indicate that this would be a replacement for the 6520 PIA, but not entirely sure. So I'd be interested in trying to swap out this chip in my Dynacord P20, I just need to source the chip. It appears to be reasonably cheap, but this guy warned me not to buy any generic 6821 you see online as they may be of substandard quality or not even usable. He suggested looking at some old Atari computers. I don't want to source a chip from a computer - that's expensive and potentially impacts a computer that could be repaired or working. I'd like to get a chip online somewhere - they seem cheap (~$10?). Does anyone have a source they trust?
  9. Fair enough, I'm just referring more to the aesthetics and sound but point taken. I'm certain the Atari 8-bit could do better than the final result. Actually, back in the day, I thought it was fun to play, but the graphics were a bummer. It's more recently that I've realized how much it was off the mark, after seeing it on other 8-bit platforms (notably the C64).
  10. Man if ever a game disappointed me on the Atari, it would be this one. I loved playing this in the arcade, particularly when the volume was set high, it just worked for me. The Atari 800 version is just blah, the graphics are too blocky and not detailed. Even the music is wrong - it sounds "happy", like it's in a major key rather than a minor key, and loses the dark nature of the original. By comparison, the C64 version is awesome. The Champ Games version for the 2600 is damn incredible, blows away the Atari 8-bit computer version. I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but this one is a sore spot for me.
  11. It was a goal that I never achieved. By the time the Amiga came around, I was fully aware of Jay Miner and team, and their considerable accomplishments, and wanted one badly. I was also very into recording music, so the MIDI ports on the competitor Atari STs made it also desirable to me. My budget was right around $0.00, so neither one happened. I still pine for one (or both) of these machines.
  12. I may have asked this before, my apologies if I did. Are you doing these completely from scratch or is there any leveraging of code from the 2600 version (if that code is even available)? I'm guessing you are doing this from scratch, which is super impressive - I owned nearly all of these Activision games and your 8-bit computer versions are spot-on! I look forward to when you release these, it's really awesome - thanks for doing it!
  13. I know with the "original" RMT, that was the case - I wasn't sure with the updates @VinsCool has made if it was pushing it beyond the limits. Glad to hear some of this, it shows POKEY had far more power than originally thought.
