  1. Always had that C64 complex like OP describes. SID is awesome, but different from POKEY - no need to get deep but Joe Decuir always talks about Atari being a game company first, POKEY serves that mission as good as any chip from the time. Always felt it wasn't pushed enough from a synthesis perspective but then Atari also learned from the 2600 that software developers were the key to wringing greatness from machines. Maybe some programmers preferred the easy route from a sound POV, but some of the stuff people here have done / are doing is really awesome vis-a-vis POKEY. Panther was a complete miss on the Atari. Compared to the C64 version, it was not good IMHO, and that includes the music. Once I learned how to use RMT it was one of the first things I tried to replicate. Hardly perfect, but I think an improvement on the Atari version.
  2. Drums sound excellent on these!

    MAME 0.218

I recently downloaded MAME 0.218, which is apparently the latest version. I never had more problems with MAME than I've had with this version - it has to be something I'm doing wrong. I have all the same roms I've had, but many of them do not work. I don't seem to recall this many issues. Even when I have the roms, I get error messages. Anyone else having an issue?
  4. Thanks! What's the going rate for these? I am looking at purchasing another 800, and I'd like to add one of these.
  5. I made a comment on another thread about mods - something I'm not a huge fan of, but then it was pointed out these machines were always modded. I did it to my 400 back in the day, so I guess there is some validity to that. In the near future, I'd like to acquire another 8-bit. Not sure what it will be - a 130XE or an 800. Always loved the 800, and I see some cool mods like Incognito would really make it something. I'm really out of the loop on some of these mods. I see VBXE, Incognito, Pokeymax - what's what? Is there a list so you can reference should there be a mod you want to consider? Somewhat overwhelming for a person just outside of it all. Perhaps there's a sticky I missed, but any help is appreciated. Thanks!
  6. I think someone pointed out in another related thread that some games (Whomper Stomper) used the internal speaker for sound. Since later XL / XE models eliminated the speaker and routed the sound through the TV / monitor, does this imply the GTIA could be used as a "fifth" voice or did I read somewhere that you couldn't do POKEY + GTIA sound simultaneously? Really cool stuff. Very surprised it wasn't leveraged more in the past.
  7. Call me old school, but I agree with you. What's the point if it doesn't run on the real thing? I never got the modern mod thing - I like my Atari as it was, as intended. Sure, I modded mine then - so I'm a bit of a hypocrite, but stereo POKEY seems odd to me. Nonetheless, I did get this to run on Atari800WinPlus, I'll double check the settings.
  8. Very cool! Too often, any remake loses the ambience or connection to the original, I'd say this was done quite well!
  9. Ok I got it to work on Altirra - well done so far!
  10. Here’s mine - sorry for bad pics. I am the original owner of this unit, purchased for me and my siblings by our parents in 1977. I am in possession of a lot of original pieces / documentation, etc. Some of you may have seen my FB posts. I am still trying to locate my trove of games of which I’m fairly certain (not 100%) I have at least one rare game. Could be wrong but need to locate to be sure. I’m also the original owner of an Atari 400 computer I purchased new around 1979 or 1980.
