  1. I goofed with my post above. For some unknown reason I was thinking about the Atari 2600. I don't know as much about the 7800. Anyway, part of what I said may have been incorrect in regards to the 7800. Sorry.

  2. I'm not sure if I understand your problem, but maybe this will help.

The output from a normal unmodified Atari is not composite and as far as I know, there aren't any Atari's that have been modded for component. If you want more info about that, see this post.

You can't plug an Atari into composite or component and expect it to work. You need a Coaxial (F-Type) to Female RCA Adapter or something similar. Then you connect it to the TV antenna input and use channel 2 or 3. If that doesn't work, I've read that some Atari's use UHF. I don't know much about that, but here is a starting point it you want to read about it.

  3. Someone else asked about the market potential for an atari product in another thread and I thought this question might be relevant to him. Now I'm curious too. Also, any idea of the number of Krok/Cuttle carts sold?

    What thread?

It's item #10 on the list of questions in this thread: 2600 Questions

Market potential is hard to estimate without knowing anything about the product.

  4. I just received my track ball in the mail today. I bought it on ebay sealed in package. I had never used one before, since I am juuust not old enough to have fully experienced Atari during it's heyday, but I'm more than making up for it now!

I tried it out on Centipede for the 7800 and 2600, I played Missile Command, Millipede and Crystal Castle. By far, Centipede for the 7800 was the game which responded to the track ball controls the most. Missile Command was a close second however...

Still, it's hard to resist giving the ball a big old 'spin' in order to quickly get your character all the way to the other side of screen similar to how you would with an arcade track ball. My track ball doesn't seem to work that way. You really have to push the ball down when you roll it in order for the sensors to pick up your movement. If you do it like that, it actually responds pretty good!

    See this:

    Trak-ball?

Here is a link to the Missile Command TB hack for the 2600.

The manual is hilarious! "If you spill liquid on your trackball - Get it serviced right away!" Atari must have known they made a very temperamental peripheral device!

So, other than the 5 games I tried, are there any other 2600 or 7800 games that work well with the trackball?

I've played Fast Food with a trackball before.

  5. Fixed. I just increased the blink rate when the character is speeding so that the collision register has a chance to hit :)

Thanks. That seems to have worked nicely. :)

The screensaver byte was still (basically) unused, so I reactivated it. It should timeout and shift the maze and background colors when the stick or select/reset haven't been for about 9 minutes.

    Nice.

It is kind of neat to put it on pause until it's gone into screensaver mode. Then take it off pause, but don't touch the joystick. The ghosts start moving and you're in a real game, but it stays in screensaver mode. Is this a bug or more like an easter egg. ;) It doesn't bother me.

A quick way to take a look at level 255 added (hold UP on both sticks when hitting game reset). Should I make this level to be winnable?

    I don't know.

Are screen rolls still a problem?

It seems to be alright now.

  6. You can also go though regular dots (especially when cornering) on occasion when using the cheat. This is because the player's X/Y is being changed twice in a row without checking if anything was hit the first time. Reading energizer collisions is done with the hardware collision register, so it's much more noticable - if an energizer is "blinked off" as you cross it's position, it won't be eaten. The hardware never registered a collision in such a case.

I see now that you mentioned this in the first message. Sorry I forgot.

Consider it a penalty for using the cheat unless a fix can be found ;)

That sounds good to me. Thanks for the reply. You've done a great job with the game.

  7. Here's a bug report. I've seen it a few times on Stella 2.4.2 (old version). Today I saw it on a real 2600 Jr & Harmony cart.

You can sometimes go through the power pills without eating them.

Note: I may delete the video off my account after it's no longer needed. If anyone wants to archive it, feel free to.

EDIT: I think I'm always using fast-mode when this happens, but don't know if it is related. I like fast-mode, so I use it a lot.

  8. I think what you're looking for is an RF Modulator. Sorry, I got that backwards.

You can also get your Atari modded with A/V output. You might search the Hardware forum for "video mod" or "a/v mod" for info. I don't have an Atari with a video mod. So I don't know a lot about them.

If you can't find any other way to do it, you might get a second VCR to act as a converter. Plug the Atari into the converter's (2nd VCR) coax and run audio/video lines from its output into the 1st VCR's (the one mounted on the wall) input. At least that works when using a DVD recorder as a converter.

  9. REFERENCE: Atari Age March/April 1984 Volume 2 / Number 5 page 13 bottom right hand corner

Atari Age did not cover cartridges made by anyone other then those made by Atari and for Atari.

The article also specifically states that it will be for the 2600 system.

It even mentions Zelda as the name of the Zookeepers damsel in distress...

(I would scan the article and post, but uploading pics is a hassle here since you have to host them yourself)

Someone posted this link in the thread that Wickeycolumbus posted.

  10. I tried this on an Atari 2600 jr with the Harmony cart.

Debro's speedup cheat has been added (when left difficulty = b, use the fire button to move double speed). However, this still needs a little tweaking.

    I like that.

Does this version work on a real television? Or is it still rolling occasionally?

    It rolled on me occasionally.

  11. I tested the patch on Windows (yay for Qt being 1.5 GB) and I was wronng about the problem. HarmonyCart.exe works just fine - it just doesn't produce any console output because it doesn't use the console subsystem.

To get the console output, redirect the program's output to a file (or pipe to cat in MinGW), like:

    c:\Program Files (x86)\HarmonyCart>HarmonyCart.exe -help > c:\work\test.txt

    c:\Program Files (x86)\HarmonyCart>type c:\work\test.txt

I didn't test it, but I think the above two lines could be replaced with the following:

    c:\Program Files (x86)\HarmonyCart>HarmonyCart.exe -help > con

  12. There is a "My Content" link near the top of each page that might help you if you lose one of your threads again.

Tried that, the wedding post didn't appear near the top of my posts, or I overlooked it. At any rate, I apologize if I offended. When I posted originally the site looked different. I honestly couldn't remember if I had posted or not (as I've posted to a few sites around the Atariverse) because the forum had a different skin at the time. I think.

No problem. Sorry if I offended you.

Hopefully I'll have time to do all this, if so I'll post pictures in mid-June.

I hope your Atari set up will be a success.
