  1. I have absolutely zero experience with G-Sync, so I can't comment on this whatsoever. Also, I don't have access to any Nvidia systems; all Intel and AMD graphics. And even if I did have an Nvidia card, I don't have a G-Sync compatible monitor. :( So progress in this area will be very slow, TBH.

Multi-threading is disabled by default since it hasn't received a lot of testing yet. TBH, on any fairly aged system, emulation will not be taxing anyway, so the effect of multi-threading will probably not be noticeable. This is more for systems that are multi-core, but relatively slow. So something like an ARM CPU/GPU, or similar. Shouldn't hurt to use it all the time, but in many cases it won't help much either. Feel free to test and report :)

Thanks for your reply! I'll leave it disabled by now then....

As for the G-SYNC issue, I was almost sure the problem was related to windowed fullscreen being used instead exclusive fullscreen.

Then, after reading some Stella source code, I realized it uses SDL, so I read some SDL documentation as well.

After, I setup VS2017 and could (sort of) fix it.

    https://youtu.be/RjFhjXm41fk

Note I don't have experience as a game developer, so I wasn't expecting to fix it without side-effects: if I leave the game when in fullscreen, sometimes emulator disappears, and it must be restarted.

I just wanted to be sure it was related to exclusive fullscreen. Again, as I'm no game developer, I understand you could have avoided using exclusive fullscreen for some reasons, and as Stella uses SDL, maybe the fix might even be out of your control.

Anyway, if you want to look at it anytime, and need some tester, I'll be here!

    Thanks!

  2. I have questions about "Video" options:

1 - When using Direct3D renderer, NVIDIA G-Sync doesn't trigger when in fullscreen. I must use one of the OpenGL video renderers.

Is there any workaround for this that enables G-SYNC with Direct3D? (happened also in Stella 5)

2 - "Multi-threading" option is disabled by default. Is there any known issue if it's enabled?

  3. ...This river raid III is in fact unique.

I have about 500 roms now that aren't in the TOSEC set as verified with CLRMame.

I can try to post the roms from this one pretty soon.

    Any advance on this matter?

It'd be really cool to put hands on that River III again after so many years...

    Best regards

  4. The application simply crashes when i try to use it in OpenGL mode.I've tried to change all OpenGL parameters i could find in stella ini file, but no luck.

Is Stella supposed to work with Windows Vista in OpenGL mode?

There were problems with OpenGL and Vista in previous releases, but I thought I fixed the issue (at least it's fixed on my system). It's possible I didn't fix it entirely, and it may have nothing to do with your hardware or environment. I'll try to test on a 32-bit version of Vista and see what happens, but this may take me a week or so, since I need to find a system to install Vista32 (I only have access to Vista64).

Oh, my mistake.I THOUGHT i had the latest Stella...i've just checked and it's 2.4.2 ...sorry...

I thought it was the latest cause i've downloaded it last month i think, and now i see the release of the latest version was posted at the beginning of april here in the forum.

Sorry again, i'll get the latest version.

    Thanks

Well then, barring any other problems, this is almost definitely the issue. OpenGL support in Vista wasn't fixed until version 2.5.

i've just tried and Stella worked.

But in OpenGL, some games are slower, running sometimes faster than normal.

Are the games supposed to work normally in OpenGL with Vista, or you're still improving OpenGL support?

Try enabling OpenGL vsync. This should tie the output to the refresh rate of your monitor, which on an LCD would be the same as a real NTSC system (60Hz).

As for the speed issue, this was mentioned in the release notes. OpenGL mode works in Vista, but isn't as fast as in XP (or other systems for that matter). I'm not sure what to do about that, or even if there's anything I can do. OpenGL has been reported to be slower in Vista overall anyway, due to the way MS has changed their graphics subsystem. You can try changing the 'gl_texrect' option in stella.ini from false to true and see what happens, but other than that there's nothing I can do for now.

I'd tried vsync before, but no luck.

    And what about software mode?

Do you plan to improve it for running better on Vista? Can't vsync be added in software mode?

It runs very well (better than previous release) but there still are slight problems with speed/video synchronization

  7. The application simply crashes when i try to use it in OpenGL mode.I've tried to change all OpenGL parameters i could find in stella ini file, but no luck.

The only thing i got unsure about was the "libGL.so".

There's no file with this name in my PC.Eventhough i didn't google for it to know what it was exactly, i supposed that library was for Linux, judging by its name.

Is Stella supposed to work with Windows Vista in OpenGL mode?

Make sure you're using the most recent version of Stella (2.5.1) and that you've downloaded the latest video card drivers from the manufacturer of your video card. I've personally tested on Intel, ATI, and Nvidia OpenGL hardware in Vista 32 and 64, and it worked fine for me.

First of all, thanks for your reply. And for having created that great emulator too.

    I'm using the latest Stella.

And i'm using the latest integrated graphics' driver too... ...well, it was until last month.I've just realized there's a updated driver at via website, released april, 22 (or 28, can't remember)

Will check all this later and let you know

Also, I suggest you completely uninstall Stella and remove all config files (in My Documents\Stella) and try with a fresh 2.5.1 install.

I will try it, and let you know what happened

I just thought I'd add that your PC seems very underpowered for running Vista, as you've mentioned that (a) almost all your RAM is used, and (b) Aero is turned off. It's possible that OpenGL mode is also stressing the system too much. I've run Stella in OpenGL mode on a 600MHz system with no problems (but not in Vista).

That's why i mentioned emulators of more advanced systems run just fine.

I don't personally use Vista, but now I'm wondering if disabling Aero also disables all 3D support (including OpenGL).

No, it doesn't.Or at least i think so.

The other emulators i have that support OpenGL run just fine without Aero.A good example is Mame.

In both DirectDraw and Direct3D modes, it runs games like Out Run and Street Fighter Alpha 2 with sound (sampling rate set to 48000HZ), at 60 FPS and with no frameskipping. All this with either:

    A) double resolution, windowed (my favorite)

    or

    B) full-screen (1280x1024) without interpolation or any other blitter effect.

The main reason why i want to use OpenGL is, in software mode, the game doesn't run smoothly.

There're small "distortions" in game display, like if the game WERE running at 60 FPS, but with occasional frameskipping.

Of course, emulators of newer systems (like "Fusion" and "ZNES") run just perfect in my PC.

    Stella, z26, and PCAE don't.

Z26 is the one that's closer from running quite smoothly. There are the same problems Stella has in software mode, but they happen less often.

Maybe such "complexity" of Atari 2600 explains why no emulator was created for Symbian based phones so far. They can emulate SMS, Genesis and SNES pretty well.Even the GBA.But no one developed an Atari 2600 emulator yet (after years of Symbian phones)

Back to the topic, my PC:

    -Pentium Dual-Core 1.6 GHZ

-64MB on-board video (dxdiag shows 128MB as video memory).

-DirectX 10, DDI version 9Ex (according with dxdiag)

-VIA P4M900 chipset, default video adapter (no third-party graphics card installed)

-512 MB DDR2 SDRAM (Windows uses almost all the physical memory)

-and very important: Windows Aero disabled.

Is Stella supposed to work with Windows Vista in OpenGL mode?

    Thanks

  9. Did you try any of the roms I posted?

As Rom told, he gently sent me the versions he had.

Does anyone have this 4-in-1 cartridge?

    http://www.atariguide.com/16/1606b.htm

I looked for its dump but couldn't find it anywhere

Hi, since it's my site you could email me :)

    Hi.

I thought about it.I'm used to email developers, companies, and so on to give suggestions or asking for help in specific matters.

But when i reached your site, at first sight, i saw it as a commercial site, once people can buy the items that are shown there, and i didn't think it was a good idea to ask from a ROM dump from a site that sells cartridges.

I did not explore the site though, cause i've googled for the 4-in-1 cartridge, and your site appeared as a relevant result. Then i was surprised to see that cart there, with pictures and so on... and i copied the link to ask for help here in atariage.

I just couldn't imagine i would get help here from the admin of the site where i saw the pictures of the cartridge for the "first time" after more than ten years

This river raid III is in fact unique.

    Indeed my friend, indeed...

I have about 500 roms now that aren't in the TOSEC set as verified with CLRMame...

    Cool

I didn't get CLRMame cause i've got Good2006, supposing it is better.

I can try to post the roms from this one pretty soon

    I really thank you.

This ROM isn't found anywhere so far, even after years of Atari communities and related stuff sites.

In my opinion, the reason for the lack of that ROM until today is the fact it's not known of many people.Other point is, probably collectors that even have the cartridge don't know the game is unique, like you said.As there are many River Raid hacks, one might look at that cartridge, and think it's just one more hack.

You'll be the first person in the world to make it available.

    Thank you again

    best regards

  10. Another question if anyone has this cart. Is it the original version of Frost Bite or is it that "Eskimo Jump" hacked version?

I can answer your question partially.

It's not "Eskimo Jump" for sure.

It's Frost Bite, yet i don't know if it is the original one.Anyway, the game is just like the original.

That version of River Raid is a legendary one for me.This 4-in-1 was the second cartridge my father bought.

That River Raid (named as "River III" in the cartridge) was the first one i saw, and i thought it was an original game.

The game is pretty hard. You hardly reaches the 10th stage.

This is due to random walls in brown stages.

And sometimes, the walls take everything ahead you, so that you'll have no other choice than crashing your plane against the wall.

It commonly happens at the end of the stage, and it happens randomly.

I really hope someone can dump the cartridge soon.

Perhaps TomBrazil or Sr. Ferraz can sell you one of their duplicate River III Milmar carts:

    http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=1149025

You should really try to contact them...

    Thanks for your suggestion

If they could dump the ROM it would be great.

But if i bought the cartridge from one of them, i couldn't dump it to play in PC.And i don't have a Atari 2600

That's why i'm looking for the ROM

I've got River Raid II (by Cosmovision) and River Raid III (not sure by who...it's got no top label), which are the same game except for the company logo on the screen. The game(s) is a hack of River Raid, and is probably the same game you have. Both are Brasilian pirate cartridges, as far as I know.

This hack does seem more difficult. The terrain is strange, with all sorts of different patterns of odd protrusions from the shorelines (are they supposed to be docks or something?), and boats that sail through land, and helicopters stuck inside little ponds or lakes in the "mainland" that don't appear in the normal version of River Raid. Lots of weird stuff like that. The play mechanics are otherwise the same, but the game is more challenging, partly due to its peculiar layout.

Do you have it?Could you please post a screenshot of the first stage?

Well, no one has done it so far after years, but i assume it's due to people don't know that version of River Raid is different from the other ones that are available as single ROMs.

Attached are three screenshots from River Raid edited by me with Paint, where i tried to reproduce the first and second stages of "River III".

there are two pictures of yellow stage, cause i can't remember how it was exactly. Then i've made two versions.

    http://www.atariguide.com/16/1606b.htm

I looked for its dump but couldn't find it anywhere

Most multi-carts aren't dumped... for the most part you wouldn't want to - just download the games separately! In fact many multi-carts have hacked ROMs so there is a case for dumping them, but for all intents and purposes you may as well just download the parts.

Welcome to AtariAge, by the way!

    Thanks for the welcome.

The problem is the specific version of River Raid existing in that cartridge isn't found anywhere.

Well, at least i've searched the forums and the internet, and found nothing.

If anyone could help me in this matter, it would be cool

    Best regards
