The original design of the 2600 was to include two speakers in the top deck for stereo sound.

It makes sense, since several of the older Pong systems had built-in speakers, too. They used the TV only for the picture.
In retrospect, I'm really curious to know why they did that. Later systems had no trouble using the same RF modulators to send audio AND video to the TV, so was there a specific reason why the Pongs didn't do this? (1970s FCC regulations, perhaps?)
