  2. Yeah that's the weird part... I have the Super Action controllers plugged in and play all my games.. then I plug in Montezuma and I can't even get the keypad to start the game!? So I unplug the Super Action controller and plug in the regular controller and whammo! It works like normal.

I've tried to get this to work twice on the weekend thinking I was losing it but nothing... I will try a few more times and test it using controller extension cables etc and see if something works. It's really weird as I would love to play Montezuma with Super action controllers as they are soo nice (and brand spankin' new too!).

I'll run a test with both regular controllers and then both Super Action controllers and then all four using the 2 controller extension cables and see if there is something faulty. But the weird thing is, I've been playing PacMan Collection, Sky Jaguar, donkey Kong, Lady Bug, Miner 2049'er and the Super Action controller is working perfectly... then I drop in Montezuma and it's a no-go.

I'll post when I run the tests on all the controllers. Just weird...

    (I've been playing PacMan Collection)!!!!!!

    you bastard!!!!!!!! ;)

Yuppers!! And it's awesome as heck!!

We'll have to get together and run the Coleco for an afternoon sometime!

In the meantime, I need to test Montezuma's Revenge some more.

    :D

  4. i had bought a xbox live gold card, so i hook up my modem to the xbox, and i go to update my machine: note this is late at night after coming home from work!!! so anyways it goes through its little updating scenireo and i get a update failed screen:

    it says

Can't update your console. PLease contact xbox Customer Support or go to www.xbox.com/support.

i did that but no useful info.

So i called microsoft, they found a page where you can burn the update on a cd or dvd and you can pop it in the machine and it will update it. that didn't work so i went online and redeemed my gold card hoping it will work. nothing.

I guess i should have redeemed my subcription first , then did my updates, because i had bought some old xbox games and the 360 couldn't read them.

could i have buggered up my machine? can this be fixed some how???

I gave up on trying to my my own update CD with the download file. I ordered the actual update CD directly from Microsoft for free (plus $2 S&H) and after waiting a month for the CD <grin>, I'm finally playing classic Xbox games on my son's 360 console! Hope this helps, Cal

well trying to use the burn the update to cd didn't work!!!

so maybay I'll try that and order the cd from them! thanks

  5. I don't know about you but I use Wikipedia a lot, maybe a lot more than I like to admit. You see over the years I have been here I learned a lot more about the 7800 than I ever knew. So after seeing the post on it's computer once again, i decided to see what Wikipedia had and it isn't much. See what I mean

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_7800

For one it doesn't even mention the computer, and I am very sure than unreleased game list is far from complete. Could someone here who knows more about this update it?

    It says that:

atari later began to use bankswitching in 1988, releasing 64K and later 128K (1 megabit games). By the end of the system’s life cycle, most games were 128K in size, with a few being 144K. While the system was certainly capable of playing even larger games (4 megabit and beyond) no games of that size were developed.

That I did not know! Now if they did that in the first place, develop 7800 games in 4 mbs or more. Would they have had a better chance at winning the war with Nintendo, or Sega????

  6. interest check on 5200 paddle controllers, as in a stock controller with a 2600 paddle on it, also with a switch for up and down for games like pole position, if some of you guys are wanting them, i may make up a few. i know there are other guys doin it, but just thought i would ask.

hmmmm how much will they go for??? I think i would be interested!

  7. I seperated the soldering points this morning before going to work, so I did that and well......... :-D she worked.

Just want to thank everyone who helped out with saving the old girl.

  8. see thats the thing? I don't get a solid black screen i get nothing but the blue screen from the tv. like its not even hooked up to the tv. i changed the rf cable still nothing is happening

in the pic that i have taken what is that blue tube between the left difficulty switch and black and white switch on top. it sorta looks alittle bit burned on the left side but not much?

    another question?

should solder points be seperate from eachother, or does it matter if the solder spread to the next prong???? just wondering.

  9. The white "paste" is not a problem. It just helps dissipate the heat. The power regulator is the black thing with three posts that is screwed onto the square silver block on the left bottom of most switchboards. In your case, it is the piece inside the black steel "cage" on the far left bottom. You can get a replacement at Radio Shack (I believe it is a 7805) for about $1.50. I would think that is your problem source from what you state.

If you have a meter, you can jump the middle and left pin on the regulator and see it it reads +5.

The only other thing could be your AC adaptor. You can meter that too, or watch when you plug it into your console, there should be a small blue spark near the jack.

    ok I'll try that!!! thanks

  10. I don't know what part it is, but if it in fact was already soldered to the same electrical point, I wouldn't think that re-soldering would have caused a failure unless you put enough heat to it to burn it up. Tough to do if it's a heat-sinked part as they often run pretty hot anyway. If I recall correctly, the heat-sink tab is common to one of the leads (ground?) so it's possible that it could safely have an electrical connection on the board. I can't speak specifically to the design of the 2600, though as I've never had to work on that part of one.

But, yeah, unsolder it and see what happens. If you toasted the 5v regulator, that's a dirt cheap, very common part. You can probably even still get one of those at Radio S hack. (Or rob a used one out of one of a bazillion other electronic devices, they're everywhere.) From what you describe about the difficulty of getting it to solder, it probably shouldn't have been soldered.

If it still doesn't work, verify that your power supply is still working. If you shorted the input, it could have taken out the power supply.

I unsoldered it but it still doesn't work. there is this white residue where the 3 prongs lead into the heat sink. is this right or is this leakage.

where is this 5v regulator located?

  11. I got this awhile back and i finally decided to work on it. the color and graphics were weren't all that great, color flicker, and graphics were all over the place.

SO i cleaned out the cart slot, pretty dirty, opened her up and reseated the chips, tested it out and it seemed to be ok. put i pacman arcade, adjusted the color. worked great

getting ready to put it all back together again but i wanted to check the solder points on the switch board, and it seemed the black piece, just below the power switch was loose, and the solder point was broke, so i tried to solder it so it won't jiggle anymore. trying to get the solder to stick to the little post that holds that bracket with the 3 prongs. but it sorta held it snug.

so i tried it again to see if any diference, but now the atari doesn't even turn on, and no picture?

should I have left this bracket alone? And what does it do? was it a connection for the would be speakers???

here is the pic, its bad but you'll see what I mean.

That is a heat sync for the regulator. I don't think it's supposed to ground to the board or it's a short circuit. It's supposed to "float". Hopefully it's not dead when you undo it.

thank you for the imfo r.cade! learning as I go.

What does it do now when you power it on?

xbox screen comes on then goes directly to update failed screen. thats it no dashboard or anything.

btw i get this code: PV: 2.0.7357.0 CV: 2.0.7363.0

don't know if this means anything?
