  1. I like Star Trek.

  2. Atari released the 5200 in 1982 in response to the Intellivision and Colecovision.

The 5200 was DESIGNED to up against the Intellivision, they didn't know about the Colecovision until it appeared at the '82 Summer Electronic Show when Atari showed off the 5200. I've always read too that Atari was "late" in bringing out a 2600 adapter for the 5200 as the original version had to be modified for it to work! If they were planning to release an adapter, the console would have been ORIGINALLY designed to use it! I don't believe Atari was planning t...

  3. I have 2 of them. One works. One doesn't. The one that doesn't just gives a black screen. Any ideas? Bad chips?

VCRs were crazy expensive new too. Food was cheap, and technology was insane.

Yeah, but I have a working VCS from 1977 and a working VCR from 1982. Sometimes the money equaled quality.

  7. also tried a couple of power supplies too, but didn't help
  8. was just asking about this. Today I took apart a power switch to a coleco that suffers from garble graphics, but nothing. So my guess it has to do with bad chips.

I just learned from the Atari Age "Did You Know" ticker that Trammel laid off 1000 Atari people in 1984. Seems to me they were on the on the skids way before 1985.

      R.Cade

He bought it from Warner in 1984 and was trying to make it profitable again. Of course he layed off thousands. Warner was losing millions.

  18. Imagic was formed in 1981 by nine disenchanted Atari programmers.

    1. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

It seems that the biggest mistake Imagic made was sticking with the 2600 too long. Activision was more diversified, and also succeeded in making an IPO before the crash, both of which helped to keep them afloat during the crash years.

    2. Ransom

      Ransom

So, before then, they were enchanted?

    3. SoundGammon

      SoundGammon

Makes you wonder had Atari DID give credit to the designers by putting their names & pics on boxes...no bad games! Who'd want their pic on box with a bad game in it? That practice should be in use today! They should have payed more attention to business than listening to lawyers all the time!

  19. Atari awarded a $500 million contract to IBM to assemble, test, package and distribute the Jaguar.

    1. save2600

      save2600

"awarded"? Always thought it was because IBM happened to be the lowest bidder. Just business as usual, but worked out further since they could say "made in America" for a while

      Flojomojo

For a second, I thought this was "news." I guess it was, a long time ago. And yeah, giving a contract to someone, even the lowest bidder, is an "award," just like when you "win" an auction by bidding the highest amount.
