Brief story and some appreciation from a recent 5200 convert
CannibalCat replied to DiscoDr.Bones's topic in Atari 5200
Welcome to the club man! I was in the same boat with a 130XE... ended up taking the plunge for the 5200 (A/V and PSU mods), rebuilt controllers, Competition Pro digital stick, Wico analog stick and pad and almost all the games (including a ton of ports made into carts). Love it to death! This was the system I always wanted as a kid (had a 2600, VIC-20 then C64 instead), so it was always near and dear to my heart. The 5200 doesn't disappoint and all naysayers are just regurgitating isolated bad experiences or simply passing along misinformation. -
Aking thanks so much, you rule!
-
You sir, are a gentleman! Thanks so much

Yeah I may have gotten it confused with A8 mode on the EMU... although I did see an old post of talk of combining both ports into one 32k ROM image (I think Ken was working on this)... not sure what happened with that.
-
Oh, so player 1 works fine for you, just not player 2? Let me check mine...
-
Do you have a 2-port or a 4-port 5200? I know for Archon on my 4-port, I have to plug the controller into port #2 to get it to work properly... have you tried this?
-
Quick question... I could have sworn I played Preppie II once on a 5200 emu, was it ever converted or maybe I'm remembering something else... I know Preppie was converted a while back. If Preppie II was converted, anyone have the ROM? Thanks
-
Yeah I hope this ends up seeing the light... looks like a great port. Would be willing to shell out $50 easily for it.

Thanks man, appreciate it!

Is the Pooyan ROM still available somewhere?
-
Quick label for Embargo if anyone wants...
-
Awesome man! Thanks so much for all your conversion work... you rule!
-
Awesome! You wouldn't happen to have a separate binary just for Embargo would you?
-
Threw a label together for Sea Chase using the original box art if anyone needs or wants to tweak further!
-
Wow! You rule man, thanks so much!

For games that don't require an analog stick (which is most), I use a Competition Pro joystick (has a Y-Cable built in to attach to a standard 5200 controller)... if you can find one (they pop up on EBay every now and then) they run about $50-$70 but it's worth it 100%

Mask ROM carts (like commercial releases) and EPROM carts are 2 totally different beasts... to make a working EPROM cart you need a slight modification of the PCB usually, like the addition of a 7408 IC, etc. (and only certain "donor carts" work) For more info: http://arcarc.xmission.com/Web%20Archives/Deathskull%20(May-2006)/games/tech/5200epromcart.html

Steve/Classics: is it ok to make a cart of this for personal use? And if so, do you have a binary without the initial splash screen you added to it? Just curious... thanks! Definitely my favorite A8 game of all time!
-
Question: is it possible to do Sea Chase by Romox as well? Would love to see that one converted... same programmer as Ant Eater!
-
Thanks for the port! Made a label for it if anyone is interested...

Selling an Atari 130XE with SIO2PC, APE and all cables.
CannibalCat replied to CannibalCat's topic in Auction Central
Yeah good point, I mean it is the registered version of APE (in my name of course), but if you wanted it in your own name yeah probably best to re-register. I wonder if there is a registration transfer option? -
Holy crap I love Bob
