  1. Won't see me buy any of the AtGames products. They're garbage. Besides making money, I don't know why they bother - probably because they can make money. And for something as recent as the Genesis, if you want to play the real carts, you're best off getting a real console and passing on this junk, which is a waste of money IMO. They've churned out so much junk that any talk of "improved" products next year rings hollow with me. The 2600 was right with the 2s... then we get the bad 3, 4, 5, and 6...
  2. They definitely incorporated Atari, ET and the landfill dig into the story. The names were changed - Atari became EmeryVision, and ET became Nottingham Nights. And the landfill wasn't in New Mexico. They did show a 2600/VCS, but it was somewhat disguised. The game graphics looked authentic, like what a real homebrew might look like, but I have no idea how they accomplished that. And there was a twist or two to the story, of course.
  3. Ever feel the need to not let the fact you suck at a game factor into you giving it a bad review? That's me with Zippy. Momentum is a bitch - not enough, can't make a jump; too much, fall to your death.

No one on youtube has EVER felt that need... EVERY half-assed review is either:(1) It's goood=They're good at it or (2) It Sux!=They suck at it.

Guess that explains why I'm not on Youtube. ;)

On the other hand, sometimes games are just that bad, and deserve a severe review.

  4. Anyone catch Elementary? Atari, ET and the landfill dig inspired tonight's story. They changed the names, but the link was obvious.

Atari became "EmeryVision," and ET was "Nottingham Nights."

  5. Would these be missing the back like the clear ones or will they be identical to the original shell? As I recall, the back is missing because these are the molds for the dental device that didn't have the back/rear piece, leaving the case open at the rear.
  6. I got back into Atari around the mid 90s with a 2600 pulled out of a shed. It was full of dirt and dead bugs. It worked and still works. I acquired several more 2600s over the years, and the ones that worked upon getting them still work. Never had a functioning unit die on me.
  7. Funny - I went looking for a video of Thrust, and the first one I found, the first search return, features a guy who obviously has no idea what he's doing, trying to comment on the game. The definition of pointless. Everyone says Star Castle is great, but it's not a game I have any attachment to. Don't think I had ever heard of it. I might consider buying an unboxed version, if one ever becomes available.
  8. For the 2600, I have 8 homebrews. Newest arrival is Zippy. I also have Go Fish, Seawolf, Lady Bug, Fall Down, PacMan 4K, Princess Rescue and Juno First. I also have 3 hacks - PacMan Arcade, Space Invaders Arcade and Space Invaders Deluxe.
  9. Have you tried each of the "dead" carts several times? Sometimes a cleaning isn't enough. Repeated inserts and removals will sometimes get a cart that appears to be dead working again. I've had that happen before. A 600XL was my first computer. Didn't do much with it, played PacMan, Star Wars Arcade on cart and typed in BASIC programs that I saved on my 1010 recorder. But I always wished my computer had the 64K instead of just 16, or that it was an 800XL and I just hadn't noticed. Back then I remember hearing about the magical memory expansion unit, the 1064, but never saw it until it popped back into my head many years later and the Internet allowed me to see an image of it. But my memories of the 600XL were fond enough that even though I now have an 800XL, I bought a 600XL when the chance arose. I've even thought of getting the 1064 just to do now what I couldn't do nearly 30 years ago... (expanding the memory internally is beyond my skill level)
  10. Watching a big old building being torn down, hoping there's no Atari stuff in there anywhere... ;)

Always sad to see old buildings get torn down. My town has destroyed about all its history now. Vacant lots are trendy you know!

  11. I found a 5200 with controllers in a trash can at a car wash. Those controllers worked better (at least for start/pause/reset) than the fancy rebuilt controller I had to rely on to use with my Wico.
  12. I keep choosing TV shows to watch that get canceled. 666 Park Avenue, Last Resort, Almost Human and now Intelligence. RiP At least I still have Person of Interest and Elementary.

Shoot, I really liked Almost Human. Of course, Fox never gives sci-fi type shows much of a chance. Now I just hope Shield will remain.

  13. Around 250 unique carts. I made a conscious effort to avoid duplicates. Label variations never interested me.
  14. The hyper sensitivity on this whole thing is just amazing to observe. People should be able to ask simple questions and get straight answers without being attacked or insulted. Just as people who buy software and hardware should appreciate those who create it, those creating it should be appreciative and of those who have an interest in buying it. Not being forthcoming and straight with answers creates misunderstanding, confusion and leaves things open to speculation. That's not good for anyone. I've been vaguely aware of this whole thing, off and on, for the years over which it's been around. There have been spans of time where I've frankly forgotten about it. Would I be interested in buying one? Maybe. Depends on the price and how useful I'd think it would be for me - software is needed to go with the hardware. But it doesn't seem like buying one will be possible - an "under the radar" release to early supporters only doesn't make it sound like it will be available to even consider buying. I'm just glad the AA store doesn't operate this way. I fully expect someone to now attack and insult me for what I've just said. None of what I've said is meant or intended to be an attack or insult against anyone, and not on any individual. If anyone sees it that way, that's your interpretation. These kind of things shouldn't spiral out of control like this. Communication would go a long way to preventing that.
  15. I got an XEGS before I got a 400. I now have two 400s and I like 'em a lot. It's nice that your 400 has 48k. Mine only have 16k. So you should be able to run just carts on it that would need more memory, plus make use of a disk drive with it. There are some, like the Imagic titles, that only work on the original 400/800 and won't work on the later XL and XE systems as-is - there is a way to do it, but I can't recall the details as I type. The 400 doesn't have BASIC or anything built in like the XL and XE do. The XEGS will boot to BASIC with its keyboard attached; Missile Command is built-in and comes up without the keyboard. The XEGS keyboard is rather "spongey." If you plan on making much use of it, you may want to consider getting the silicone cups for them here: http://www.best-electronics-ca.com/130xe.htm#XE%20Touch I haven't experienced them myself so I can't say if they're worth it.
  16. Colossal eye-roll inspired by seeing news that a new "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" movie is going to get made. Hopefully this would-be franchise will end with an initial, colossal thud of a bomb.

We can only hope that Power Rangers will meet an end soon. The end of Power Rangers is perhaps the most important task humanity is faced with today.

  17. What's a "good" price to pay for an Atari 800?

    1. Brian R.

      Brian R.

Yeah, shipping is expensive, and the risk of damage is high. Have looked for a local opportunity for those reasons.

Heh - just noticed in a pic with the cartridge lid open, there's a dead bug right at the top of the left cartridge slot. If you're taking a pic, why leave the bug there?!

  18. Never watched "The Goldbergs" before, never will again; tonight's show was promo'd as being about a character getting hooked on Pac-Man, instead it was Punch Out.

      Surely a very odd bait-and-switch.

    2. SeaGtGruff

      SeaGtGruff

Punch Out worked better for the script, as far as the game appealing to the guy's mean, violent streak, as well as replacing his game addiction with boxing as a real life "healthy" alternative. For Pac-Man it would have been, what, eating? ;)

I'used to watch the show but the Mother character is just so over the top obnoxious. If she really was like that, since the show is based on the creators real family, then those kids must have needed years of therapy.

  20. Well, the whole thing goes back to the documentary, and ET is what has been played up the most. They went looking for that, not all the other games and stuff that was uncovered. ET is the "known name," and what's highlighted in the documentary, which is why this was done. Right? As a local news reporter for 20 years, I always try to get stories as complete, thorough and accurate as I can. I'd like to think that applies to most of my peers. But sometimes there's angles to stories and parts of stories I don't know about, or people don't tell me. Also keep in mind - most reporters covering subjects aren't going to be experts, well versed, or even familiar with the subject. We all are well-versed in Atari and this "issue." If I was reporting on this, I'd have a "leg up," and know more about it. But I'd bet most of the reporters covering this don't have our level of knowledge on Atari or gaming in general.
  21. Thinking about getting a Moto X and wondered - has anyone done a 2600 theme, with a wood back and orange accents?

  22. If you're playing on a CRT TV like I am, I'd suggest adjusting the color/contrast/sharpness settings and see if that helps with the colors. For some reason I had never done it with the TV I've been using most recently, and once I thought to do that, I was able to improve the picture quality a good bit. Settings for games aren't the same as settings for TV shows, it seems. I use the TV I have only for games.

  23. Think I see part of the top half of a 2600 console in one of the dump photos. Would be the first piece of hardware I've noticed, not counting Star Raiders keypads. It's near the top of the pic with Phoenix in the foreground. http://kotaku.com/awesome-photos-from-the-atari-landfill-1568711945

  24. Unmodded and pretty darn good. "Perfect" might be taking it too far - this isn't bluray - but I don't get static.
