  1. Sometimes i like to play my Various classic consoles sitting in front of TV with console sitting on the carpet in front of me.I thought about this and figured that's not too smart because of the static that can develop and zap the controller ports or other chips in your console. So i put a piece of plexi glass underneath the console. Then i thought that's probably worse, since plexi glass is plastic.I now use a piece of rubber carpet underlay between console and carpet.I've never seen any caution notes in any manual about this, but it seems like a very real possibility that placing any console on carpet is asking for trouble.Any one else ever think about this?

Some consoles are known to develop problems sitting on carpet, but it's usually due to heat build-up instead of static discharge. The original Intellivision came with a warning flyer telling owners to not place the console on the carpet because it could fry the circuitboard, after numerous reports of overheating. It said to place a book or a board between the console or carpet so that heat could dissipate easier, and this is something I do to this day, whether it's a 360 or a 2600.

  2. I've only gotten to level 5 without cheating. It's tough without the code, but not as tough as Contra III and Hardcorps.

Contra III is almost impossible to beat without a cheat, I don't care who you are. I had a friend who beat it after like six months of trying, only to get to the end screen that said something like "Sure, you finished the game, but you did it on easy mode. Try a harder difficulty, pussy." He ripped the game out of his SNES and tossed it out of his window and into the street, where it shattered into a million tiny pieces. True story.

  3. I beat it without the code way back in '88 or so. That was before I even knew there was a code.

For the last 22 years I've played it with the code, just because I'm lazy.

The Japanese version isn't that much harder than the US from what I remember. Then again, I never played it without the code. :D

  4. How about the celebs who DID have their names or endorsements on games? I don't mean the sports stars like Michael Jordan, John Madden, and Troy Aikman, but people like Michael Jackson, Buzz Aldrin, and Chuck Yager?

Definitely the coolest was when they made a game based off of Mötorhead for the Amiga. You get to be Lemmy and basically go around cracking skulls with your bass.

  5.

I'd love to know what the heck that is!

Neo Geo games are emulated quite easily on the DC. That's a self-boot emu of MS2 that you can pick up most anywhere that hosts Dreamcast iso's. You can also get single disc burns that have the entire Metal Slug series, or the entire Neo Geo collection altogether.

    I love the Dreamcast! :lust:

  6. Let's see, out of the top ten we have:

    10. I-phone: A cellphone that happens to play some games (rather awkwardly I might add)

    9. Atari 2600- The most important console of all time having barely made the list

    8. Game Boy- sure, it's great, but are we talking consoles or handhelds here?

    7. Neo Geo- a console that all of five people owned

    6. Playstation- is it really that great? I would have had it maybe at number ten, or better yet, the PS2 instead

    5. PC Engine- Citing the lack of Colecovision or Snes, the PCE/TG16 shouldn't even be on this list

    4. Sega Genesis- I think it should have been up there a little higher, but that's just me

    3. The fuxking XBox 360? The worst built console of all time? The most poorly engineered crap that Microsoft ever shat out? It's not even the best console of this generation, much less of all time!

    2. The NES? Honestly, as stupid as the rest of the list is I'm surprised it even made the cut.

    1. Dreamcast- First off, I love the Dreamcast. It's probably my favorite console. But is it the greatest? Fuck no. The SNES, the Genesis, NES, Vectrex, 2600- all of these were better, more historically important, and more successful financially (except maybe the Vectrex).

I hate lists like that. The guys who write twaddle for sites like PC Mag and Yahoo strike me as being people that have absolutely no interest in the subjects they write about. Their editor says "Hey Joe, we need an article about the ten best game systems of all time." Then Joe goes on Wikipedia and takes notes about consoles that he's never heard of, making little citations next to the entries like "Neo Geo is really popular among arcade fans". These guys are the "journalistic" equivalents of The Irate Gamer- people that don't know jack shit about games pretending to be experts. Fucking hacks.

  7. I have both, and there are many fun games for each. Favorites: Intellivision: Locomotion and Happy Trails, Colecovision: Miner 2049er, Frenzy, Mousetrap.

Both consoles are bigger than most other game machines, especially the Colecovision with extra controllers and stuff, so if physical space is really an issue, you'll want to consider that.

I also have to say that with all the different game systems over the years, I ALWAYS get a yearning to go back and play more Colecovision games... They are just more funner.

Space is also a good issue to bring up. Width is limited on my shelves, and the Intellivision is a big fat hog. The Colecovision is 15 inches wide. The INTV with Voice Synthesizer and cartridge inserted is 22 inches long.

Again, if you're going to go with the INTV go for the Model 2; it's not as bulky.

  8. The question is actually quite simple to answer- do you want to actually play the console? If so, get a Colecovision. It had better games, better joystick (which isn't saying much), and the ability to use Atari/Sega controllers if so desired. The hardwired, fragile INTV controllers are pure garbage. They make playing even the most simple of games a chore- sort of like the Power Glove except they're mandatory and not an optional diversion.

I often hear that Colecovisions are crap quality, but I have to say that they hold up far better than INTV Model I's. Neither system is perfect, but unless you grew up playing an Intellivision you'll probably hate it. If you do get the Intellivision, get a Model II, even though it won't play certain games.

  9. I don't have a DP account but apparently there is another sale thread there. I agree that if it came down to a house or collection house would win unless i could and was going to make house out of teh collection. If the guy really is claiming to have carts worth 10K+ but isn't willing post pics etc, is not willing to check a thread much that he started, or even be more accomodating, and is expecting offers larger then what new vehicles cost, those are major red flags imho.

Does anyone know this guy or have any kind of proof?

Apparently a few people know of his collection there, where he goes by the name backguard and has been a member since April 2006. Here's a post from that thread:

He has an NWC and a Sealed Myriad, among others. Those are damn near 10k alone, his collection is worth more than many people here make in a year.

I wouldn't call this anywhere near a "serious" thread though, a "serious" thread would do a full part out, or at least by system. No one on here is in any position to make you a fair and respectable offer on the entire collection.

That sums up my thoughts. This thread is either a :

    1. Joke

    2. Scam

    3. A posting from someone who doesn't really want to part with his collection, so he made a half-assed attempt at it ("Honey, look- I put everything up for sale like you told me to!") (I'm guilty of this one myself).

    4. A convoluted way of getting everyone to look at his collection and marvel at the sheer bulk of it.

Either way, there's too much cloak and dagger bullshit associated with this sale that even if he were to part it out system by system, I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. My red flags have been up since the first post.

  10.

Better than the Astrocade? Really? You mean better than Emerson Arcadia, right? Not that I've played any of them.

Yea, better than the Astrocade. I've never played the Arcadia either. Or a vectrex.

I love the Astrocade, but I'd have to say the o2 is the better console as well.

The Arcadia, Channel F, APX- they all had their moments but were pretty primitive compared to the 2600. The Astrocade I think was a little bit more on the level of the Odyssey 2 and the 2600, but it didn't have as many great games as it should have.

    Compare Muncher on the Astrocade:
