When Atari was split between Atari Coin Games and Atari Corp (home company) in '85, Atari Corp. retained all the coin op rights to all Atari games pre-1985. Atari Coin Games retained all rights to games produced from 1985 until they were acquired by Midway. That's why you won't see Paperboy and Stun Runner (e.g.) on an Atari compilation disc, and why you won't see Asteroids and Major Havoc on a Midway disc (unless they are cross-licensed). While true, this isn't what was being discussed in the original message. STUN Runner is owned by Midway, yes. The question was why Midway didn't put it on Midway Arcade Treasures 2, which they would be allowed to do, not why Atari didn't put it on Atari Anthology. It's absence from Midway Arcade Treasures 2 is what the quote from my message refers to. maybe there was just some technical quirk in emulating the particular stun runner hardware that they couldn't get bug free given the production schedule, dunno gavv

I preferred the 2-square variant I would prefer George Carlin's description of four square: racket-less four way ping pong played with an inflated ball and no net while standing on the table. gavv

Commodore 64 direct-to-TV w/30 games is here!

here are some shots of the c64stick interior, one showing the detail where the keyboard and controller 'pads' are.. gavv -
actually i just heard that she actually made the thing hackable so that not only you can hack in a keyboard to it, but you could in theory also hack in a connection for a 1541 disk drive to it ^^. (and its own power AC power) Course that all means doing your own wiring n junk, natch gavv

It's Jeri's work on the C64 unit gavv

disregard post, didn't see earlier posts with similiar details within the 'atari flashback' threads ^^

Heyho, dunno if any of this isn't already known, but i hadn't heard any of the details ^^ talked with a friend who is/was out at a conference in CA ... The C64 joytick product looks to be really cool, since it seems to be the first 'emu-joystick' project that is actually a 'C64 on a chip' (Jerri Ellsworth's design using FPGA), even (according to my friend that talked to her) the capability of booting directly to Basic and other 'hack friendly' features (i'll edit when i talk to him again) Apparently also the item won't be in retail stores (ie Target, etc) until January, but it will be making an appearance on QVC of all things on November 26th. gavv

actually i'd say that Dreamcast was handled much better than the 'Extras for Gen , & Saturn eras'. part of the reason for the disenchantment with Sega was because of Sega's waving like a reed in the wind with every 'cool' supposed technological advance, constantly changing their direction and focus (nono, 32X is really where we want you to go...nono waitaminute, Saturn! that's it!). Dreamcast did suffer from Sony advance press for ps2 yes, but part of the problem IMHO was that DC was just slightly bad timing, when it came with their GDROM based drive before it was truly economical to go full out to DVD. I can guarantee you that the lackluster japanese DC market (US was much better) was specifically because of the promise of DVD movie playability that the upcoming PS2 was touting. gavv

what particular thing about the enemy drop behavior? having the enemies return from being on top of the bun/piece after being dropped instead of regenerating like they were squashed by parts. It plays fine w/out but it just means its a completely different playing game. off the top of my head i only believe the 2600 BT has this behavior. gavv

I'd want to see ya work on the drop enemy behavior than worry about new versions just yet , just my hope ^_^ gavv

Actually wasn't there an NBC 'game show' around that same time period (83/84) where people would compete not only in events like outdoor obstacle courses (running jumping, hovercraft driving, blah) but also video games (some reason i got this memory of them at one point playing Circus Atari). gavv

and then sued MCA for the settlement money back after Nintendo won because as part of that suit, it was proven that MCA had previously contended THEMSELVES that king kong was in the public domain in some previous proceedings revolving around the 1976 movie remake. gavv

Classic home console games over arcade versions

Intellivision Burgertime, hands down gavv -
Umm... The 2600 was designed years before the 400. Your strategy would leave Atari out of the market they created. Plus, the computer hardware was much more expensive. Even after you chopped off the keyboard, the 400 would have been a $300+ console in 1979. The real problem was the bureaucracy at Warner that prevented anything from getting done in an efficient manner. The 5200 came about by default because all other game system projects were eventually scrapped. -Bry Actually at least as far as the designers were concerned (as quoted from David Crane) the guys making the 400/800 *were* designing the next atari game machine, it was the higher ups that were insisting on all the other applications for the technolofy ^^ gavv
-
i dont' think the crash had anything to do with the 5200 demise, the 5200 was dead-on-arrival tech. As Alan Miller said 'we weren't very impressed with the 5200, it was just a rehashed 400/800' , and 'the 5200 wasn't adequate technology' for 5 years down the road from the VCS. the 5200-level tech was pretty much designed in 1978, 3 of the big 4 from Activision did the 400/800 OS the end of 78/first half of '79... It was purely that Atari didn't realize that they needed to see what they needed to do in the future until it was too late. Had they developed the 5200 near alongside of its cousins the 400/800 and released it in 1980, instead of waiting to see Intellivision start to make inroads in the market -THEN deciding it needed a new game system, i believe it would have fared better imho. gavv

Would you reccomend Intellivision lives?
gavv replied to CrazyChris's topic in Classic Console Discussion
At the CGE panel, the intellivision guys mentioned how the rights to say, burgertime, is about 10,000 dollars, and they're a pretty low budget organization. Although they are trying to get the rights so some of their games, unless you've got a few million to give them, don't bitch about it. Hey I have all the right to "bicth" this is a live or die in the video game world for them to make it in this market world they need to have some heavy hiting games to there CDs plus they can go in any bank and get lone, I'm sorry but if they can't bring the goods then it's there lost not me thats is why there are tanking in sales plus all the other "Classic Games" like the TV-Plug&Play or what ever. Like WHO really cares about Intellivision's Space Hark or Snafu? Same goes to Atari 10-1 Joystick, 80 in 1 CDs or Flashback crap. Donkey Kong No amount of money i believe would have Nintendo *and* whomever might own the coleco software copyrights to get this thing released, especially given inty DK's ahem, 'awfulness', the big N would most likely not want it to see the light of day again Pac-Man - Could be the best game on that unit! have the code rights from Atarisoft/Intv deal, but the character & licensing rights long ago went back to Namco. Master of the Universe. Mattel Toys was near impossible to work with *when they were part of the same company* and MotU was the only one of 'their babies' they would let Electronics 'mess with' (as opposed to other 'logical' licenses like barbie or hot wheels). The Empire Strikes Back. Still unknown where the copyrights to the actual software to the parker brothers intellivision games exist now, and that's all before having to convince Lucas to let them do it for any amount of money. Frogger. same with ESB & parker bros, and with Pitfall. Intellivision Rocks (the PC CD with all the Inty Activision & Imagic games) can't yet be put out on consoles. The deal intellivision productions had with Activision to put it out on PC was part of the deal that had Activision publish the intellivision classics disc out on the original Playstation. nothing new on any new deals Demon Atack. same as above. Burgertime. it's part $ and part trying to get data east to allow them to do it (who had in the past not wanted the 'old blocky intellivision version' out there 'sullying the image of the arcade original'). There's supposedly like 1 particular guy in the US that says he supposedly represents the data east distribution rights where that 10k figure supposedly comes from, and IP are hesitant to work with this guy as well. gavv -

New ColecoVision products coming
gavv replied to davidcalgary29's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I have read the posts made by KLOVE and all subsequent posts made here in the Classic Gaming thread. I still have yet to know what this is or what it looks like etc.. I emailed that www.colecovision.com web site and asked them what this was all about. They did not get back to me. I still think that it's going to be a cheese-ball 10-in-1. you mean people actually think the bulldog thing was anything more than a joke? gavv -
