I agree. I hate to see a classic cabinet turned into a multigame. Part of me would like to slap the fool that did it. They could have been easy to fix for somebody that knew what they were doing. But at least the cabinet was saved. Finding a cabinet in good condition with the art in tact is the hardest part of restoring a game. They could be converted back, but now you would have to try and repair the control panels as well. I am sure all of the original guts have been taken out too. So yeah, that guy is an idiot.

I picked it up for $50. I didn't really have room for another machine, but I couldn't pass it up.

I picked up an Atari Superpong from Craigslist today. It is kind of working. It looks like the coin door was taken out and some reset switch was added there. I haven't had time to mess with it yet, but it is a cool piece of arcade history. IMHO.

Not exactly intending to bump this topic, but yeah, I do have some plans to open up an arcade.
With this indie scene popping up, I thought I could be able to let people make the games for my arcade. Sorry, retro arcade fans, there will be no Ms. Pac Man. Just stuff people make.
I have some concepts with this arcade of mine:
- High score contests. Within designated times, I may run a contest for the highest score for a certain game. Those that come in a range will win something, those who come within a higher ranger get something better, and the highest score gets the best prize.
- The Ubuntu Linux OS. I save on licensing costs when I use Ubuntu Linux instead of Micro-Soft Windows. Heck, lots of European organizations did! This will also make it somewhat easier.
- Networked High Scores. The machines (using said OS) will be able to send data of the scores and who scored them to a central database. Assisting the high score contests. One could also go to a kiosk in the arcade to check the top one hundred scores to any title.
- Food. An arcade can't be profitable without it. Heck, Flynn's didn't make it without a snack stand.
- New games every-so-often. This is an indie arcade for a reason. Anybody can make a game for it if it's good enough. Copyright laws still go in effect here.
The biggest question is: Will it make it in the twenty-first century with features such as this?
I don't think this will work too well. Arcades are cool because you can walk in and see familiar games and jump right into playing. I think a place full of unknown games will end up like those movie theatres that cater towards indie movies. Nobody is ever there. The popcorn is stale because nobody ever orders it. Personally I would go to a place like that, but I am weird.
The only successful arcades are Chuck E Cheese and D&B. And they probably make most of their money from the food and drinks.
There is actually a cool arcade that is operating close to where I live. They opened up a few years ago where an arcade used to be back in the day. Overall they have a good game selection. I doubt they make any money though. Also the condition of most of the games are pretty rough, and for me that kills it. I have put money in machines only to find out the controls don't work right, machines get turned off so the high scores are gone. I set a personal best score on the Robotron there and was all happy to get the top spot. I came back later and the defaults were back up. Arcades are all about nostalgia, and it is hard to recreate the past.

Yeah, I bought one because I wanted something new to add to my collection not because I expected it to be a truly awesome game. Also the label looks really cool.
I hope it is somewhat fun to play, but regardless I wouldn't turn around and put it up on ebay the day I get it in the mail. That isn't cool. -
This looks cool. I hope you take the conversion all the way and put in the tarzan character and the yell at the beginning of the game. I have a Jungle King arcade game and it would be cool to have a home version that is closer to the arcade.

Yeah all of the pc based multi-boards like the 1000's in 1 are terrible. Plus they have loud fans on the boards. The 60 in 1's are great though. Very good emulation and the sounds are perfect in most games.

Yeah, Chasing Ghosts was good. Also Tilt: The battle to save pinball was a good documentary about the pinball 2000 machines. And of course the King of Kong!
-
I finally watched my DVD of Special When Lit the other night. Anyone else on here watched it? I enjoy seeing documentaries on gaming/arcades/pins. When I see some of those crazy people who have pinball machines in every room of their house I tell myself that I don't have a game problem yet.

I only have one pin and it is currently broken. Atari Middle Earth. It was going cheap at auction so I took it home.

Put me down for a cart too. Looks awesome!

This is very cool! You could upgrade it to a real arcade board pretty easy. Those 60 in 1 boards can run off an old pc power supply and output vga. So you could hook it right up to your monitor. Board is around $100. Jamma harness is maybe $15. Something to consider.

Put me down for a cart with box, manual, maps, or whatever other cool stuff you put in there. Thanks

If you do a third run put me down for one. And I second the cardboard box idea.

I am not sure if this is the right place to post, but I came across a port of the Imagic game Atlantis on iPhone the other day and thought I would pass it along. Looks just like the 2600 version. Fun to play. If you search for "Atlantis Invaders" on iTunes you will find it.

Start with a volt meter. Check that you have voltage leaving the main power block in the bottom of the cabinet. From there trace up to the ARII board. Check the outputs of that board for the correct voltage. If you are still good check the voltage on the main centipede board. I believe there are some spots labeled on the board for the purpose of checking that voltage.
Those ARII boards go out a lot and the good thing is you can get a working one for under $50. I would get the game board working and at least playing blind before you replace the monitor since you said it seemed to have power.

Rygar is a great arcade game that never gets any props. I sold mine years ago and miss it.

I got my cart and played it over the weekend. This was the first batch of homebrew games I have bought and it is good stuff. I got a copy of Turbo and K.O. Crusier as well. As if I didn't spend enough money on games already.
I was wondering if there were plans to make a manual for Halo 2600? I would love to get some more description of what all is going on in the game.
