Did you get one of those cheap MSS100's off eBay? I am going to order one here soon and try it on my STe. Need that and a serial cable.

DIY: Retro fitting a PicoPSU into a STf/fm/e machine
thgill replied to thgill's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I just looked up some pics of the Stacy power supply and it doesn't look like it would be that hard to replace, unless I am missing something. DarkLord - have some pics of your Stacy PSU? -
I think the display brightness may have to do with the capacitors on the motherboard and/or power supply being aged. I know the video output on my UK 520STe (with PicoPSU) is crazy bright. Even with 150 ohm resistors on the RGB lines, I still have to dial down the brightness and contrast on my PVM monitor. I recently sold a 520ST that had far dimmer output than the STe. Since it was an original model, I suppose it probably could use a recapping.

DIY: Retro fitting a PicoPSU into a STf/fm/e machine

7905's are usually rated up to 1 amp. I would be surprised if the TT drew more than a few hundred milliamps from the -12v rail. -

You could always use a small 7905 voltage regulator to get the -5 volts. -

I think the bigger problem might be overloading the 12 volt rail on the STacy power supply. What's it rated for? -
I mentioned in the other thread about having installed a PicoPSU inside my STe and thought people might want some photos. This is the second one I have done and I have the install process done pat. This is the 80 watt PicoPSU with 80 watt 12 volt brick. I retained the original power switch and installed the 2.5mm dc power jack in place where the original AC cord plug was. This Pico plugs into an ATX 20 pin male connector that is then wired to the original 6 pin ST motherboard power connector. Reason I did this was because this machine is a UK PAL machine with the original 220v power supply. I have always thought the internal power supplies on STs were there weak point.

Damn. Thanks for the pictures Official Ninja. Its pretty noticeable if its present and I only see a bit in your 1st picture. 2nd picture I don't see any. I will put together another cable tonight and test it again. Weird thing is that it happens on 2 different SC1224 with their built in video cables. Also happens with my DIY cable running to my 20 inch PVM monitor.

It's the only CRT in my house in use. I am currently using a Sony PVM 20 inch RGB monitor as my display so lift it up off the desk while the machine is running is kinda hard. It weighs 70 pounds! None of my other devices have this kind of odd "ringing". Plus every STe I have used exhibited this same behavior. Would be nice if other forum members can try that demo I pointed to and let me know their results. Perhaps this is a design flaw in the 520/1040 STe hardware?

Ok, so I posted this question over at Atari-Forum 2 years ago and got many replies, but never a cure. You can read the whole thread there for details. http://www.atari-for...hp?f=15&t=19199 Question: Anyone with a 520 or 1040 STe machine have ghosted image problems? Usually looks like a halo/shadow effect to the right of graphics. Shows up mostly on light colored backgrounds. Example: This is from the Tempest 2000 Music Disk: http://www.pouet.net...php?which=21030 You can see the shadowing off to the right of the big smiling face. Anyone with a STe machine please try this disk and see what your results are. Quoting my last post on this from A-F:

There is a seller on eBay selling used MSS-100s for like $36 shipped. With PSU. Seems like a good deal.
-
Thinking about getting a Lantronix MSS-100 off of eBay. Good choice for Atari use?
-
JayMSA can write back MSA and ST files from the Atari.

That's a pretty big IF. He already has the 8 bit folks ready to lynch him.

If I had anymore of the 24 pin connectors in stock, I could pretty easily put together a Scart cable for you. Are there any other members interested in Scart cables for the Jag? Perhaps I need to do a second run of Jag RGB cables but this time as Scart RGB.

Looking for an external floppy drive for my Atari ST machines. Would prefer a DSDD drive like the SF314 or similar.
-
That's Thgill. I don't know about the floppy. It had a sticker under it but it seems to be missing now. I was going to make a thread at some point. Asking if anyone knew anything about it. It works really well but it doesn't support ST disk swapping. I think that's kinda weird being an ST drive.... I opened it at one point and it doesn't look like a replacement drive. In fact it's really tight in there. The ribbon cable connector is on the opposite side as a normal drive and there is a small female to female bridge connector to connect the drive to the PCB. If I remember right anyway! It was maybe a year ago since I opened it. I guess I can open it and take some pics... Would I be able to replace the drive with an Epson that does support disk swapping? I would probably swap in a modded Sony MPF-920 drive. There was a thread over @ Atari-forum by Alison about modding the Sony drive. http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=10873 I have performed this mod in the past and it seemed to work well. If you are handy with a soldering iron, its like a 5 minute mod...if that. I am going to retrofit an SF354 drive with one of the Sony drives.
-
Yeah, looks pretty good. I am more interested in that external 3.5 drive. Is that a Cumana?
-
I am looking to pick up one of the Lantronix devices here soon. I can also test it then from my ST to see how it behaves. edit: Are pretty much all the Lantronix devices essentially the same in regards to functionality on machines like the ST?

All the 1084 versions should handle 50Hz material just fine. Might need to adjust the V hold in some instances. Usually once its set, though, you wouldn't need to adjust it again. And yeah, getting use to PAL 50Hz screenmodes takes a bit of getting use to. Just do like I do. Use a PAL Atari to start with!
