Maaaan, thrifting sucks these days! I went out to Sierra Vista today, and you know what I found? Paper envelopes for CDs and DVDs. Whoo freaking hoo. What the heck happened to the video games? I thought the collecting bubble finally burst, but you wouldn't know it from looking!

Depending on where you are and what thrifts you have available, gaming related items may be pulled aside... by employees, auction sites (shopgoodwill), etc. Our area Goodwills frequently put gaming stuff on their auction site, and only crappy things like old sports titles make it to the stores. Yet, people still seem to find things at a Goodwill in another state or area of the country (as evidenced on YouTube).

Are people donating as much anymore as well? Our local mom and pop places seem to be getting big hauls of people's collections in the last couple of years.

    NOTE:  Woo Hoo!!

Other note:  I didn't have to wait 13 months this time!

I snagged a transparent blue one myself. I did follow Madlittlepixel's advice on how to better your odds. I won't have too much time to mess with it until the youth soccer season is finished.

Sorry to hear about the accident in your later post.

  3. That has been one that I have been meaning to try even though it has nothing to do with the current Legend of Heroes story in anyway. But it is a glimpse into Falcom's past.

I am not sure that it will be high on the priority list after reading that though. There are some clunky gameplay mechanics that I may have put up with back in the day that would just frustrate or annoy me now.

I've been considering an experiment -  playing a Japanese rpg and using my phone's translation tools to see if A) it works and B) if I might learn a slight bit of Japanese while playing

There are fan translations of a handful of games:

    https://www.romhacking.net/?page=translations&genre=&platform=5&status=&languageid=12&perpage=20&order=&dir=&title=&author=&transsearch=Go

There might be a few more scattered here and there not on that site, but as jpkspsx said, many of the RPGs are completely unplayable (one of the Ys IV hack from that page covers everything though... even the limited voice acting was dubbed).

In all the Christmas excitement I forgot I had back ordered a PlayStation MemCard Pro. It came in Friday. It doesn't automatically interact with my PSIO yet but I'm hoping for a firmware update at some point. It works manually though. I put a 32GB SD card in since I couldn't find anything in the house smaller. I won't ever have to worry about memory cards again.

I am hoping for that automatic interaction with the PSIO as well, but I am not holding my breath.

  6. I now own a retrotink 5x as well. I haven't had a chance to play with it too much. I was having problems with my OSSC for the PS1 and PS2 on my new Sony Bravia, but the 5x works well out of the box. I am still keeping the OSSC for VGA and for my old computer monitor.

After upgrading the 5x firmware...there is a lot to mess around with.

Way back, the Framemeister was my go to, and it was largely supplanted by the OSSC except for composite and S-Video use.  The 5x seems to do really well with those sources, so is there any reason to keep it anymore?

  7. Any advantage using Pseudo Saturn Kai? It is possible to flash an Action Replay cart with it or buy one where someone has done it for you. I did it myself, and I remember it being a pain in the rear since my Saturn was not modded. I haven't used that flashed cart for a fair number of years since installing a mode, and my Saturn's cartridge slot is very fussy. I need to get a 2nd Saturn with a working cart slot and to use discs if I ever feel like it.

  8. I have Terra Onion's Mode as well, and it works fine. The issue you many run into with any ODE that used an FPGA chip is availability. Something like the MODE hasn't been available for while, and it may be well into 2023 before such things are available again. I am not sure what the Fenrir uses, but the order page has an October to December time frame https://shop.fenrir-ode.fr/en/23-super-fenrir-duo.html

  9. I don't foresee an issue, assuming the battery on the controller board is fine.

Pretty any Dreamcast that hasn't had its internal battery replaced will need a new one. I am not sure how long they last, but it is important to get the right kind (ML 2032).

Does the Framemeister actually do anything better than the RT5X? The only thing I can think of is that it's a flatter surface, so you can put stuff on it with less risk of it sliding off the top, which is totally not useful at all, but other than that...

It does has a D-terminal input, which pretty much everything else lacks, but I don't know how common D-terminal is outside of Japan. Even in Japan, it's not very common anymore. My company recently bought a new projector, and the projector has a few different types of input: composite (lol yes, seriously, composite), VGA/DB-15 (labelled コンピューター. Obviously, this means you are ONLY allowed to plug in a computer. If you plug your Dreamcast into it, YOU ARE GOING DIRECTLY TO HELL!!!! Or something), and HDMI. No D-terminal.

I guess that's pretty much it. It's slower than the RT5X or the OSSC, it's about the same price as both of those combined, it lacks YPbPr input, the colors are noticeably worse than the OSSC or the RT5X, which is something I noticed immediately when I tried Dreamcast S-video on my FM, CRT, and the RT5X, and I think there are some other things that it's worse at as well, but I don't remember. It's a good device, the best (only?) option of its time, and an excellent deinterlacer, which is something the OSSC is very weak at in addition to also lacking S-video and composite input, but most modern stuff has outclassed the FM in one way or another, and I am fairly certain that the RT5X is better at basically everything, but I'd have to check again unless someone wants to remind me.

There is an adapter that was sold separately to allow the D-terminal to use component input for something like the PS2, first gen Xbox, and GameCube if you have those cables.

I agree with your point about what happens with the colors compared with the OSSC. The the color bars are really crushed together with the 240p test suite on the framemeister, and while one can fiddle with it to make it somewhat better, the OSSC blows it away.

I don't have a retortik 5x to compare it with. I've considered getting one since the OSSC lacks AV and s-video inputs, and I'd like to be down to one device. Have to see how life events go in the next couple of months though. That might mean the 5x goes out of stock for a long time, but so be it.

  11. Due to space constraints, it is one way for me... flat panels. I don't have a place to put even a modest sized 21-24 inch CRT.

I don't mind the sharp look on some of the older consoles, actually. I think systems like the N64 really suffer on flat panel, even with a good up scaler. I could add the PS1 and Saturn to that list (though 2D figures can look fine on a flat panel).

I just checked ebay and lol the ones on there are more expensive than the SHDS3. People are insane these days for wanting that much more cash than for the superior thing that replaced it. More insane than usual, I mean.

I don't understand this at all. I just looked myself, and this is crazy. I did check for sold listings and someone payed $375 for the older unit. The only thing I can think of is that people don't know about the replacement product and are getting themselves scammed....

  13. I wasn't aware that there was a crash until several years after it happened. I do remember seeing things appear in sale bins, and figured that era was coming to a close, but I was too young at the time to associate that with an actual crash. Then I got busier with other things, and really didn't keep track of what was going on. By the time I got back into games. the NES was out there. So, the crash flew over my head.

  14. My copy of the premium edition came from Amazon yesterday, though I won't be playing it in the near future.

If anyone is interested in the premium edition that missed out on it on release, I would recommend some patience. I had read that Atlus intended to make more available after the initial release sold out (sorry... I didn't save link). It has been available on and off from Amazon, Gamestop, etc at retail price.
