Out of curiosity, *do* you own a PSP? You're totally going overboard with the bald faced lie crap. Sure the current instructions say you need a PS3. That's not a lie, because you do need a PS3. Next a Sony guy says you won't need one in the future, and you claim he's lying. Why? Do you believe that the instructions are set in stone and can never be changed? 'Cause I'm pretty sure that if they can change firmware then they can change instructions for downloading too... Personally, I see the whole PS3 connectivity thing as an incentive for PS3 owners to purchase a PSP if they don't own one already, or a bonus for PSP/PS3 owners. Does it shaft the majority of each? Probably. Do the majority really care? Probably not. We're talking about emulating a 10 year old system here, not forcing PSP owners to own a PS3 in order to play PSP games themselves (which, I'd wager a guess, is what the majority of PSP owners *really* care about - playing PSP games). Again, getting all up in arms seems silly to me. I *am* a PSP owner, and I look forward to emulating Syphon Filter 3 on my PSP ('cause I never finished it), but I'm in no rush.

It's a short term thing, isn't it though? And emulators are being worked on, right? So why get so angry? Just wait. (I, for one, am not suprised at all the anti-Sony venom at all. Lots of it comes from people who don't own the product at all, they just like ripping the company)

Zuh? Of course if you get the wrong download you'll brick your unit. That's implied in what I meant by doing your research properly. I simply thought you came across as overly conservative so I thought I'd provide insight into the other side of things. PSPs can be bricked performing the legitimate upgrades as well after all.
-
You could do that, but it's an over reaction IMO. Patience will likely yield a homebrew PS1 emulator at some point. One is already under way, and I can only see an official one making things easier for the development team. I've got a flashcart for my GBA and I definitely prefer the PSP NES emulation over the GBA emulation.

Modifying the firmware by downgrading could brick your PSP, but you don't need to do that in order to play emulators. Some emulators do require you to downgrade, but I was happily running a NES emulator as well as Grand Theft Auto: Libery City Stories after I got my PSP for Xmas last year, and the same can be done today if you're not interested in tinkering with the firmware. If you do your research downgrading is no big deal. My PSP has gone from 1.52 to 2.00 to 1.50 to 2.71 SE-B'' with no problems.

Which is great for playing Activision games (I've already unlocked stuff from 3 games), but doesn't help with the other VCS stuff. I've had to hack my Space Invaders rom to make the bullets visible (because the colour on the original made the game unplayable), and the sound still blows. Mind you the sound blows on the 8-bit emulator as well, which I'd rather see fixed first.

I puchased the PSP version because the GBA version I own blew such large chunks IMO. I don't remember which game(s) I fired up, but they were definitely slower. Enough so I've barely touched my GBA version. The PSP version, however, has been great. I haven't quite had it 24 hours yet so I haven't played much, but this is definitely more of what I was hoping the GBA version would've been. It's fast. It's playable on the run. And it tracks my high scores (the one thing I missed from my PS2 version) I think they twiddled with the unlockable requirements though. A quick search on the web showed a 32.2 was required for the Barnstorming commercial on PS2. A 30.0 score unlocked the commercial on my PSP (which said it requires a 35.0 score) and the patch (which says you have to beat 33.3). As to the original question, I don't think compilations should ever score 9s, despite how good the games contained on the comp in question are. Part of a final score should be based on how innovative a title is, and a retro comp scores zero in that category (especially one I've purchased 3 times now with no real differences between them).

An emulator for the DS would be *fantastic* - I agree! I use the PSP emulator all the time and love it (except for the sound that is - much like the PSP VCS emulator, the sound *stinks*). They do a decent job on the PSP with the keyboard, where you use the L and R shoulder buttons as well as the stick in order to let you press keys. A DS emulator would let you play the text adventures though, as typing long sentences using the PSP is too cumbersome for that genre...

That is just awsome - thanks! I've taken that bit of information and run with it, changing bits of text throughout the game. It's now called "Blue Jays vs Tigers" with a different trivia question and proper AL/NL alignments (i.e. Blue Jays and Brewers scores will no longer show up on the AL side, and Expos scores will no longer show up on the NL side). I'll save the new trivia question (plus team name changes) as a surprise Let me know what you think! Star_League_Baseball_2006.zip

I thought it might be fun to change the name of the teams from "VSTR" to "JAYS" (since I always think of the blue team as the Blue Jays) so I looked at the exe in XVI32 for the text and found nothing. I also looked for the ATASCII combination of "VSTR" and "COMP" and likewise came up with nothing. Can anyone point me to what I'm missing? I'd also want to change the "out of town scoreboard" if possible (don't want a Blue Jays score coming up there if I'm in the middle of one, now do I?) Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Heh - this is why I had to ask. I thought I had to give the elf a ride or something! It's definitely a pretty game, and I'll be giving it another go on my PSP sometime today!
-
I'd never heard of "Unicorn Horn" until the "Atari 8-bit first impressions..." thread (where it's recommended - I love checking out those lists and trying the games I hadn't heard of before). Seems kinda neat, although I'm not sure what I'm doing. I race my unicorn across some stuff until I get to a pyramid, which shoots some light and gives me some points, then ran back to the starting castle while picking up some green elf on the way (curiously the elf can't enter the castle or pyramid area, so I can't figure out what he's good for). Anyone?

Here are a couple of obscure games I haven't seen mentioned: Buried Bucks (Analog Software) Hot Lips (London Software) Neither will blow you away with their graphics, but both get decent playing time on my PSP

In what way do you collect for the 8-bit?
8BIT 1337 replied to Ross PK's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I'll buy anything and everything that I see. Carts. Disks. Hardware. Whatever. I don't have any specific collecting goals in mind, I just enjoy buying stuff for it. The only thing I'm looking for specifically at this point would be an 800. -
I take back what I said earlier about having to turn off the sound - I had to play with some settings but it's running really well right now. (The version I downloaded had PAL as the default video setting, amongst other things). I'm loving this emulator. Every game I've booted (maybe 20ish) has been playable. Star League Baseball occasionally chirps at you, but behind that the music sounds pretty much perfect! (I can't tell if the pitches seem just a tiny bit slow or if that's because I'm stretching the screen). Anyway, two thumbs up from me!

It can't be that easy or they'd have it *perfect*. I've found that the only way to get it running smoothly is to turn off the sound, as with the sound on it chugs a little. But I took Miner 2049er through the paces (I changed the keyboard config so that I could use the digital stick as 1-4 for the elevators) and was *very* happy with it. I've been *dying* for 8-bit emulation on the PSP, so this *is* awsome for others looking for it!

I *finally* got around to updating my CC2 with the new menu based system and all I can say is *awsome*. I had made a really long list of games by Publisher for the first version of the CC2 software (with fake games that acted as titles). As painful as it was to blow all that work up and split things up into dozens of other menu files, I *love* how easy it is to pop into and out of a given publisher or year or genre or whatever my heart fancies. Just awsome - thanks for all the hard work!

Simple question: are there any plans to make StellaPSP 2.0 firmware friendly? I'm hoping it can be done, as there are 2.0 friendly emulators for other consoles (Genesis, NES), I was just curious if anybody is making an effort to that end. (I'm dying to play some VCS games on my PSP but I won't downgrade it as I'm loving GTA: LCS *way* too much to give it up).

Micro League Baseball? 985420 Yes - that was it. Anyone play this? Leaderboard Golf was a decent golf game for the 8bit line. 985430 Oh yeah, I played this. Every year I'd buy the Sporting News guide with complete stats for the entire league and enter (a) that year's Blue Jays team, (b) that year's World Series champion, and © any other team that interested me. I'd then have a 64 team single elimination tournament to decide the best team of all time. The Yankees ('27 or '61) would win often, much to my chagrin. I actually also created a "Blue Jays Greats" team (similar to the PHI and DET ones that come with the game). I've tried more recent attempts at the same sort of game (like Out of the Park) but none of them have the simplicity of MicroLeague. You have to play complete schedules and can allow for differences in stadiums and eras and the like - I prefer the simple "type in the stats and let 'em play" approach to MicroLeague by far. So yeah, I play this

StarLeague Baseball is by far my favourite sports game (and one of my all time favourite XL games). I'm actually in the middle of a best of 7 series with a buddy of mine (up 3-1 ). I tried Gamestar Football but I always found it *really* tough to catch a pass (you have to time a button press exactly as I recall). Never had Touchdown Football in the day so I always played Atari Football (RealSport Football I assume). ThornEMI soccer was definitely a great sports game too. For hockey I played it's equivalent, although it doesn't translate as well IMO. I'm off to try Touchdown Football now - thanks!

Need Help copying XEXs on PCs HD into an atr image
8BIT 1337 replied to 8BIT 1337's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
That program looks really similar to the "MakeATR" program I actually ended up using. Are they related (was the English one made off of this one, which (I'm guessing) is Polish based on the readme file? If anyone else is looking to do the same thing what was recommended above worked absolutely perfectly. That menu program is something else (I'm tempted to reorganize all of my childhood stuff using it ). I was using SD disks (to ensure compatibility with my friends drive, which isn't an Atari drive) and made a bunch of directories to represent each disk. After figuring out I could get around 84.5 kb per disk, I just kept arranging files until all disks were maxed out. Thanks a *tonne* for the information. It saved me a boatload of time! -
Need Help copying XEXs on PCs HD into an atr image
8BIT 1337 replied to 8BIT 1337's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Wow - that looks perfect - thanks a tonne! I didn't know either of those applications existed (the menu program looks really cool - too bad I didn't have it 20 years ago ) -
Need Help copying XEXs on PCs HD into an atr image
8BIT 1337 replied to 8BIT 1337's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I've actually found this not to be the case, at least as far as copying from the atr image onto the HD. If I use "D2:*.*,H4:" it works just fine. I just can't seem to get stuff to go the other way: from the HD into an atr image. I need to do this for a friend (so that I can make physical diskette images to send to him) and I'm at a loss as to how I'm going to do it. Any further help would be appreciated! (I thought maybe the number of files on the HD would be a problem, but there are only 62 so I assume that can't be it).
