5200 HSC Season 12 Round 3 - Robotron: 2084
DamonicFury replied to DamonicFury's topic in 5200 High Score Club
Congratulations! Thats was a tough score to break! -
Definitely Ebay. Used to be you could have got one at your local Radio Shack, odds are that isn't the case any more. But perhaps there's another local electronics parts store near you if you don't want to wait for a Ebay delivery. You probably also want a bit of thermal paste to apply to the back of the new regulator. How comfortable are you at desoldering the old regulator and soldering in the new one?
-
Yeah, 10-12 is fine for the input, but you should be seeing a steady 5V for the output. Try replacing the 7805 regulator.
-
Around what values were you seeing? Wildly out of range values for input might mean a bad power supply, ok input values but low output would suggest a bad regulator.
-
I'm pretty amazed about that second spinner... I'm hard pressed to think of many arcade games that will benefit from it other than Warlords and Pong. It's certainly a nice touch that makes the machine a bit more "deluxe" than I had anticipated. Wood is nice, but plastic wouldn't be a dealbreaker at all, so long as it is reasonably sturdy. Similarly, a traditional top would be nice as well, but something more streamlined would be acceptable. I would think the important thing is that you probably want the look of the thing to evoke nostalgia for a real 80's arcade cabinet as much as reasonably possible.
-
No surprise about Atari games being included on this thing (it would have been shocking if they weren't!), but it is definitely a pleasant surprise that it will feature a trackball AND two spinners! That will make head-to-head Warlords a real pleasure to play on this thing. As for Tron, it's quite possible to play it without a joystick-mounted fire button... I've been playing that way for years on my homemade control panel. It's a tad awkward to work the spinner, joystick and a panel-mounted fire button simultaneously, but it's certainly playable. As for the shape of this thing, I'm a tad surprised it hasn't been finalized this late in the process. I'd vote for something that looks like an old arcade cabinet, but I would understand if some corners needed to be cut to make it more affordable. Just so long as it's sufficiently sturdy! This certainly is shaping up to be to the best fully legal and affordable multi-game arcade machine yet offered to the public. I'm really hoping it is a big success!

Yep! http://www.learningaboutelectronics.com/Articles/How-to-test-a-voltage-regulator Should be about 12V in and 5V out if I remember correctly.

Decent run, but not enough to make zylon sweat any: 151,710 -
FWIW if it was a cart slot problem, Id expect you to see the typical color bands that a 2600 typically displays when it is turned on with no cart inserted. Snowy blackness does suggest its something else. Have you checked the voltage regulator?
-
How odd... like a bit of that white plastic was gouged out somehow? So your tiny screwdriver sinks a bit deeper on the black area than the white area? Not sure how that might have happened but Im still not sure that would cause the problem all by itself... seems like theres still enough white plastic to keep a cart edge from going lower than it should.
-
Its a bit hard to tell from the pic, but is that port really damaged, or is there just some black plastic jammed in the bottom (that could be carefully worked loose)?
-
Yes, so long as you have a Flashback 9 or Flashback 9 Gold. Again, no paddle games for now, but new paddles that work with the FB9 have been promised.
-
Like derFunkenstein says, it's pricier than a FlashBack and doesn't come with a bunch of the classic games. Also, it pretty much requires a firmware update created by some of our enterprising users to work correctly. (see here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/281462-retron-77-community-build-image/) Finally, it's reported not to work very well with paddles, unless you use a separately-purchased adapter. Having said that, if you really want to play original Atari carts on a newer TV, the Retron 77 is probably the way to go. But if using the carts isn't that important to you, you want a bunch of classic built-in games, and you want to save some $, the Flashback may be the better choice. (Note that the Flashback 9 can't use original paddles at all, but new ones are supposedly on the way for it in the coming months. Earleir Flashbacks can use classic paddles, but don't have a SD slot to add additional games.)
-
Hello, and welcome aboard! Being that this is AtariAge, most of use have a deep affection for the 2600. But a lot depends on what you want to play and how you want to play it. I know this is sacreligous to some here, but if you're just looking to dip your toe in retro gaming, and you don't plan on using an old CRT television, you could do a lot worse than picking up an Atari Flashback. That would be a low-cost way to play a nice variety of Atari games. If you enjoy that enough, you could later make the larger investment into original hardware and cartridges later if you want the full retro experience.

No problem, will look out for your new score submission. -
Atari 5200 HSC Season 12 - Final standings Please note that a 21 round season is planned. As with last season, I am planning to drop everyone's lowest score at the end of the season. That way, missing one round due to illness/hardship or an inability to find/emulate a certain game won't hurt quite as much as it might otherwise. Welcome to round three of this 5200 HSC season! Robotron: 2084 won the poll with 3 votes. Play with default difficult setting. Emulation is fine, as are custom controls. Pics preferred, but not required except for HSC wins and records. The current HSC record for Robotron was set by darthkur - 558,350 points. Bust it if you can for a bonus point! A link to the ROM and manual can be found here: http://atariage.com/software_page.php?SoftwareLabelID=660 Round ends Sunday, March 3rd, 2019 @9pm EST Standings: Nuclear Pacman - 685,850 (RECORD BREAKER) Cafeman - 466,100 roadrunner - 178,375 troff - 147,400 Hank Rearden - 91,450 zylon - 84,900 troff - 68,500 Mangia-Boy - 64,950 eegt97 - 52,325 bemis - 37,825 jblenkle - 13,625 Abel Mvada - 5250

Some fantastic playing done this round! Kudos to Cafeman, Hank Rearden, and eegt97 for breaking the old record for this game. Extra congratulations to eegt97 for eliminating the most mutants, climbing the most ladders, jumping the most platforms, etc, etc. Seems like everyone enjoyed playing this great rare game. Robotron is up next. Shoot, I totally forgot to do this. Thank you for reminding me! It's up now. -
Poll closes Sunday, February 17th, 2019 @9pm EST

True, but you can use an Atari 5200 AC adapter for it instead... I think Nuclear Pacman may have one of those.
