I had no problems getting a proper display from my STE on a CRT TV via a SCART cable from the STE monitor out. However using the same TV I could not get a colour display from my Amstrad CPC6128 and a SCART cable. I followed some advice from a CPC website to apply power across the SCART plug; a battery terminals + and - to two pins on the SCART and this did not work, but did make the battery very hot.

ST/etc to VGA adapter/cable.. _for color_?
Shredder11 replied to skeezix's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Yes it is and I am using it with an STE (PAL UK) using it's monitor out via a SCART cable; this connects to a SCART adapter with a female SCART input and then is output via S-Video (or Composite) to the Supera Color HD box; finally out of the DB15 monitor output to a CRT or LCD TFT monitor, which is preferably 4:3 ratio and 1280 x 1024 resolution. I also have a monitor switch box that plugs into the STE monitor output and then the SCART and mono VGA cables come out of that. The mono VGA cable goes from the STE straight into the Supera box too. I managed to find the Atari-Forum topic in the Google cached results; I cannot seem to access all of the topic but some of my photos can be seen still: ST to VGA - Success -
Looks pretty funky with the textured arty FX Nice to see you have an SD card working too!

Unfortunately due to the Atari-Forum.com being down at the moment, I cannot point you to the excellent topic there about connecting the ST low/med/mono modes to any CRT/LCD monitor. I posted my results of using the Geniatech Supera Color HD video adapter box which is a mere $55 USA and along with a few extra bits, is a very cheap solution. Geniatech Supera Color HD - DealToWorld Chinese website $55 or £35 -
Absolutely!

In the UK we mainly used the BBC Micro in schools along with 5.25" disks and the Atari ST/E was my first experience of 3.5" disks at home or at friends places. However I did not use HD 1.44MB disks until around 1999 and most people I knew were still using cassette based systems until the late 1980s. Also the IBM PC and clones did not really begin to take off until the mid to late 1990s, and as for MACs well, it was a non-starter in the UK and only began to sell in the last decade. Computers in the UK were seen as games machines or for boffin scientific types and it stayed that way until the mid/late 1990s. The only thing that made the PC popular in the UK was the internet, or World Wide Web as it was known then; if the internet had not come along the UK might not be using PCs much. Apart from Floppy drives and disks, I remember being in total awe of anyone owning a hard drive and that was well into the 1990s. My first drive came as part of a new digital studio multitrack recorder in May 1997 and it was quite a luxury I can tell you!

Atari Portfolio MIDI-Interface
Shredder11 replied to MrPastGlory's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I own a Yamaha QY100 sequencer which is superb and I have used pretty much the whole range at some point; I have also used the Roland PMA-5 but found it a bit awkward and limited in comparison. After reading your post I Googled around for my Psion and found something just like yours! There is a freeware GM XG MIDI sequencer and an external MIDI interface, although it possibly could work with a TO-HOST type cable. Elby Designs MIDI3c -
Atari Portfolio MIDI-Interface
Shredder11 replied to MrPastGlory's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Nice work and it makes me wonder if there is anything similar for my Psion Series 3mx, which is not unlike your Portfolio. How many sequencer tracks and MIDI channels can it handle? Is it capable of playing a regular MIDI file song, normally played on a GM synth? *** EDIT - it seems it has a small amount of RAM, and not large enough to hold a regular MIDI file. So I see why a simple chipmusic file was used; still pretty cool though! -
Do I really need a Falcon 030 ?
Shredder11 replied to AtariSociety's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I have never used a TT but I get the impression that they are serious, no nonsense type computers; the strict, sensible, 'does all his homework' brother of the STE! For the MIDI only versions of Cubase, the TT is probably the one to have. -

Do I really need a Falcon 030 ?
Shredder11 replied to AtariSociety's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
Yes anything that requires the use of the Falcon DSP processor, like Cubase Audio, Zero X or games and demos. There may be many other types of apps that use it too, but I am still looking out for suggestions on them myself. Maybe I will add a CT60/63 to one of mine in the future, but I have been put off by the difficulties involved and troubles encountered by others. As for the FireBee, well that is looking more attractive all the time. -
The STE is a great home micro and I have three very upgraded models. I had my first one since 1994 and only added 4MB and an extra MIDI out on the modem port. Fast forward another 14 years and I went upgrade crazy and bought another two STE of course. Even though I have two Falcon 030, I still love and use my STE machines and always will for as long as they continute to work.

Yes and I expect we will be wishing each other a Merry Atari Xmas in 2040!
