Yeah there were hundreds of accelerators released for the AMIGA..My cotention was that possibly the design of the ST made it less cost effective (more technically indepth) to build an accelerator. I dont know this to be true, but there is definitely a huge difference in the number of CPU accelerators that were offered for the mac/amiga and those offered for the ST.
I think the problem was that people couldn't justify spending two to three times the cost of the computer itself for an upgrade that likely wouldn't be supported by most of the software written for the machine. So people who were looking for serious performance in any particular field, be it publishing, video production/editing, sound sampling/editing, or what have you, opted to buy the machines that had some of that capability builtin as standard, so that they could be reasonably assured that any software they would be buying would support the hardware. With the Amiga and the Mac there wasn't a lot of "feature adding" hardware made available for the machines. Those machines were pretty much capable of doing what you needed them to do but just needed, in most cases, a little more oomph, which could be added quite easily without a whole lot of compatibility issues.
This is, what I think, killed Atari as a computer vendor. They sold underpowered machines at low cost. To meet their cost objectives they cut far more corners than they really ought to have. The result was that they created a reputation for themselves as manufacturing cheap and, consequently, inferior systems. The upgrades that were required to bring the machines up to par with the more expensive alternative architectures pretty much raised the ST class machines to a cost level that was comparable to the other machines, only lacking the full capability of the other machines due to the fact that the capability wasn't inherently standard and thus lacked any considerable level of support.
When you couple these shortcomings with the reality of who the typical ST buyer generally was, you soon realize that there wasn't much of a market for such upgrades in the ST marketplace. This would have ultimately lead to declining development from third party developers. So Jack cooked himself up a recipe for disaster. He created a platform whose primary selling point was its low cost. This meant that vendors producing peripherals and software for the machine pretty much had to follow suit if they were to have any appeal to the cost conscious consumer. Third party vendors found that they couldn't do so at a comfortable level, and the return on investment just wasn't there for the ST platform.
The Jaguar game console is a good example of an Atari product that was killed almost exclusively by the reputation of the company marketing it. The Jaguar was a pretty damn good machine. The company, though, had built itself a reputation for building and selling low cost, second rate junk. So no one was really willing to give the Jaguar a chance.

Thats not true, Hiro.. Have you ever seen an 020,030, or 040 based machine that wouldnt run pure 68000 code? Optimized libraries for these later processors wouldnt run on the 68000, but Motorola was pretty good as far as backward compatability...I think the 68040 was the only processor that had any backward compatibility issues. At least, it did on the Mac. There were definitely compatibility issues when Apple released Macs with 68040 processors. Atari never did release anything with an 040 processor so whether there would have been compatibility issues on the Atari machines with an 040 processor remains to be seen.
I might be wrong as hell, but I alwayse thought that the reason accelerators were less common on the ST was that they were tougher to design due to timing requirements of the ST architecture. Ive read many articles about accelerator design saying that machines with more "synchrounous" design are alot less forgiving as far as CPU acceleration goes.I never knew anyone with an accelerated ST either. I knew people who upgraded the single sided drives in their early 520s to double sided drives. I knew people who upgraded the memory in their ST machines. I knew people who upgraded the TOS ROMs in their STs. I never knew anyone to add an accelerator to their ST.
I know that accelerators existed for the ST. I also know that there were graphics boards/accelerators for the ST that gave more colors at higher resolutions on VGA and multisync monitors, but I never knew anyone to actually buy one of these either. So I don't believe the reason for lack of accelerators on the user end of the spectrum to be technical issues, as clearly accelerating the ST was possible and several companies did offer such products. I think the reason why they didn't find their way to most ST users' machines has more to do with the reason most people bought an ST in the first place: cost.
If you look back through old Atari magazines from the late eighties and early nineties... I'm going to take a little timeout right now to look through some of mine... Marvin AG offered the Chili graphics expansion board at a cost of 2,998 Marks (1000 pounds) and Maxon offered the MGE graphics expansion card which provided graphics acceleration at a maximum resolution of 1280x1024 with 16 colors. And the cost of the Maxon board? ST World magazine writes, "At 1,798 Marks (600 pounds), this is probably the cheapest of the colour graphics expansions for the ST." Just for the hell of it, I took a look at some of the prices in the mail order ads in this issue of ST World for an ST computer. A 1040ST in 1989 sold for a grand total of between 350 and 380 pounds. Add a monitor and you're looking at a total system purchase of between 570 and 590 pounds with a color monitor and 100 pounds cheaper with a monochrome monitor. So the cost of a graphics accelerator for the ST was 2 to three times more expensive than the computer itself. Which detracts considerably to whole Atari notion of "Power Without the Price." Indeed, by the time you added all of this stuff to your ST you may as well have just dropped your wad on a Mac.
Yeah, I know that graphics boards aren't system accelerators, at least in as much as they don't replace the 68000 processor or increase the speed of the processor or system bus, but the point here is that accelerating the ST wasn't cheap. Hell, it was the exact opposite. It was outrageously expensive. And this, I submit, is the primary reason why most ST owners used essentially bog standard (factory stock) ST computers. i.e., ST owners chose the ST because it was cheaper than the competition and the upgrades for the ST put the ST on par, costwise, with the competition. So if you're going to spend the extra cash anyway, why on Earth would you choose an ST over something that already included what you would have to add to your cheaper ST?
And I think, in retrospect, it was this focus on cost that ultimately lead to Atari's downfall. They put too much effort into being cheap that they destroyed their own reputation and credibility in the marketplace. You can't market something as cheap and not expect consumers to equate 'cheap' with 'junk'.
But yeah, regardless of the reason, I never knew anyone with an accelerated ST.. Plenty of accelerated Macs & Amigas though.. -

Here's one I use.That one won't work so well on my desktop because of the black background, but thanks just the same. Do you have that icon without the black background? (Yeah, I know that I could try to remove the black background myself but graphics apps aren't my forte. I'd just end up making the fuji look really crappy.)

Say, do you remember a cartridge for the 800 that you plugged into one of the cartridge slots so that you could copy the cartridge in the other slot? I had one of those cartridges. It was made of some kind of concrete stuff or something. It was like they stuck the PCB in a mold and then filled the mold with concrete. It had a SPST switch on the top. I got curious about what was inside of that cartridge. I chiselled away at it for like six hours... just gradually chipping away little bits and pieces of the concrete. I never ever did get down to the PCB... I lost interest and moved on to something else. It was the strangest cartridge I had ever seen in my entire life. I wish I could remember what it was called.

I've searched the Internet high and low for an icon to use with my atari800 emulator and am greatly disappointed. Seems decent icons for Atari emulators are rarer than... I dunno, something that's really rare. Anyone know where a nice pile of attractive Atari icons may be hiding on the INTERNET?

So could the ST using any Multisync monitor of the day. 15Khz.But you were limited to the ST's crappy LOW, MEDIUM, and HIGH graphics modes. Which gave you what?

A multi-sync monitor would get you the same number of colors at the same resolutions on a bigger what? A 15" monitor? A 17" monitor? A full-page display?
No, thanks. My Mac gave me higher resolutions and more colors on bigger monitors. A much nicer user experience than the 4 color Atari MEDIUM resolution or the Atari's monochrome high resolution. Plus the Mac didn't have an ugly desktop and filenames weren't limited to FILENAME.EXT (8.3).
I stand by what I said though you try to mitigate it..You ignored the Magic Sac comment which came out in 87.That's because the Mac II came out in 1987. It did 8-bit color (256 colors) at 640x480. It used a much faster 68020 processor. Had a full thirty-two bit data bus. RAM was expandable to 68 megabytes. It had 6 NuBus expansion slots. Shipped with System 4.1.
Yeah, I know you're going to bitch about the price of the Mac II, but you add everything to your ST that the Mac II offered and then tell me how much more expensive your ST would have been. You can start by adding a case to your ST that isn't made of painted Saran Wrap.
Why else did the press back then call it the Jackintosh.The press were making fun of it. Remember, that back then the press were heavy Macintosh users. The desktop publishing genre of software was pretty much invented on the Mac. Did you see the press abandoning the Mac for the cheaper ST? I didn't. Not even the much touted (in the Atari community) release of Calamus caused much of a stir in the desktop publishing world -- outside of, perhaps, Germany, that is.

It had the education market locked up. Most musicians and virtually everyone in the publishing industry would use nothing but a Mac. lol.
Color is quite relevant as it is needed for the main reason people owned a system at the time. GAMES. We carried over 5000 sku's of software at that time. 95% appx was games!Color wasn't relevant to Mac emulation on the ST. Color Quickdraw didn't arrive until the introduction of the Mac II.

It sounds to me like you never used Specter GCR. I used to run Specter GCR on my 1040ST, and never had a problem with any Mac software that was supposedly resolution-specific outside of the very few Mac games that existed. Compared to the Mac Classics at my school, my 1040ST w/ monochrome monitor did indeed offer better screen real-estate for programs like Pagemaker or MS Word. No one is saying that a 1040ST w/ Specter GCR would outperform a Mac Quadro, but compared to the absolute baseline Mac, a 1040ST w/ Specter GCR for a while was certainly a better deal.This is the part that I'm arguing. You're comparing the ST's 12" monitor to the Mac's 9" monitor. In your arguments, you're suggesting that there were no other Mac's available but the Mac's with the 9" screens. And that's just not the case. The point is that any Macintosh software that could take advantage of a larger screen, like MS Word or Pagemaker, on the ST could ALSO take advantage of a larger screen on a Mac. I almost bought a Macintosh Plus with an external 20" monitor from a print shop once.
And if you want to go back to what Atarian said, he said the MAC AT THE TIME. Let me go back and get his post. Hold on a second.... Okay, here it is:

We've already established that Spectre GCR was released in 1989. The current model Macintosh computers in 1989 were:
Macintosh Plus
Macintosh SE
Macintosh SE/30
Macintosh II
Macintosh IIx
Macintosh IIcx
Macintosh IIci
All of the Macintosh computers listed above were "current" in 1989 when the Spectre GCR was released. Every single one of them could drive larger monitors than the 9" monitor included with the Plus, SE, and SE/30. The Macintosh II, IIx, IIcx, and IIci did NOT have builtin monitors and could drive multiple monitors simultaneously.
Of all of the CURRENT model Macs in 1989, only the Plus and the SE used a 68000 processor. Everything else used a 68020 processor or a 68030 processor. So of the seven Macintosh models that were current in 1989, five of them would have outdone the ST hands down in terms of processing ability and speed. Color is not really relevant because the ST couldn't do the Mac in color anyway, but everything from the SE/30 through to the IIci did color very well -- we're talking 8-bit color at a bare minimum, that's 256 colors on screen at a time.
I apologize for taking your words literally, but say what you mean.
p.s. When I was in High School I only knew one Mac owner that hated the Mac and wanted an ST instead. Dave's old man was a lawyer and his mother was a teacher. They owned a Mac 512K, if memory serves. Those were the ones that had only a floppy drive. He hated the Mac because there was no games for it. He wanted an ST to play games. Not because the ST was a better computer.

Wrong again, you just aren't getting it, reread my statement also the 20% number comes from a different person, we are talking about the most common Mac. Mac Plus, you know, the one that had the most software in 1989 since it had been around since 85 or 86.
Pretending to be right doesn't make you right. You didn't say that the ST was 20% faster than the most common Mac. You said that the ST and Spectre GCR was faster than a real Mac. Which isn't true in any way, shape, or form. And there's no difference between software made for the Mac Plus and the SE/30. They all run the same software. So I don't know where you're getting this "the one that had the most software" stuff from. Saying that there's a difference between Macintosh software for the Mac Plus and the Mac II is like saying that there's a difference between software for the 800XL and the 65XE.
The real fact is that a stock ST was 1986/87 manufacture was faster than a Mac plus. Also there was Magic Sac prior to that, also faster. Add the St's larger screen and it was a better experience.Well, in that case, there's something you need to know about Macintosh software that was written specifically for computers like the Mac Plus -- The software was designed for the small screen and couldn't take advantage of larger screens. If you'd ever run System 6 software written for the compacts on the modular Macs with screens of 640x480 resolution you would know that.
But, this is the part where you say that some of the old Mac software could use larger screens at greater resolutions. And I would agree with you whole heartedly. Then I would point out that the software you were referring to could also use the larger screens of the faster Macs... Which provided millions more colors at much greater resolutions. So your argument is ridiculous either way you slice it. In summary:
Mac software was not machine specific.
Mac software was either written for the smaller screen or it wasn't. So the ST's "larger screen" offered absolutely no advantage over a "real Mac" which could drive multiple monitors at greater resolutions with true 24 bit color.
I've been an ST user in the past. I've been a Mac user in the past. I was an ST user for less than a year because I couldn't tolerate the machine. I was a Mac user from the day I first set eyes on a Classic II (A compact Mac with a nine inch monochrome screen, by the way) until pretty much the present. I haven't bothered with Mac OS X; I moved to Linux instead. I have never found the ST to offer a better experience than anything.

I'm here for the 8-bit, not the ST. I've already said that I don't like the ST and I don't step foot inside the ST forum. This is the 8-bit section. Oh, and I'm not a Mac user anymore. I use Linux now.

I'm actually quite surprised that there isn't a lot more available by way of manuals. I was looking for electronic versions of service manuals for the 800XL and 1050 disk drive a little while ago and couldn't find anything. There was one place that offered a downloadable version for sale, but they wanted $50 for it. B&C Computervisions and Best Electronics both have the service manuals listed in their online catalog for prices ranging from $20 to $30 each -- for hardcopy versions. I'm guessing this is why the Atari community isn't offering them freely as downloads; they want to support the last remaining Atari dealers. Either that or scanning a service manual would prove to be one hell of an undertaking.
With respect to the Atari 1025 printer manual that you're seeking (I assume you're in need of a user manual for that printer) I would suggest sending an email to Best Electronics or B&C Computervisions. I'm sure one of them could probably hook you up with an actual user manual.

So asking for an Amiga sub-forum on an Atari board is viewed as normal then?It's not really that far out of the question. This forum places a lot of emphasis on gaming gear, due, I suppose, to the very nature of the old Atari company and it's history in the gaming market. i.e., The company was born with a game (Pong) and died with a game console (Jaguar). There's probably little doubt in anyone's mind that the old Amiga computers from Commodore were pretty decent gaming rigs. The other factor that lends some credibility to the question/suggestion of adding an Amiga subforum is the fact that the Amiga, just like everything from Atari, is retro technology from the eighties and nineties. I would guess these to be the reasons why the OP hasn't been flamed, and has actually found some support among the Atariage faithful.

Your whole mac premise is wrong again. You could not have a Spectre GCR made without mac roms available, since you would not be able to GET the current 1989 mac roms then it makes no sense to compare 89 specs. Also most mac software in 89 was available to use in a mac plus, the newer models had the old mac modes but not much for color support software or faster cpu's.so, your specs etc are no relevant to the arguement that the St was faster. It was faster than the mac is was design to emulate. It still amazes me that people paid the amount of money they did for those things, they were incredibly overpriced.What Mac premise? You said that Spectre GCR was 10% faster than a "real Mac". You later revised your position to say that Spectre GCR was 20% faster than a "real Mac". So I asked a simple question: Which "real Mac" was it faster than? There were a lot of Macintosh models on the market when the Spectre GCR was released. Which Mac ROMs were available in 1989 is not relevant. What's relevant is whether you could run Macintosh software faster on a "real Mac" in 1989 or on an Atari ST with a Spectre GCR cartridge. The simple fact of the matter is that, in 1989 when the Spectre GCR was released by Dave Small, you could run native Macintosh software faster on a real Macintosh computer.
As far as I recall, all older Macintosh software ran just fine on the newer 68030 based Macintosh computers with no compatibility issues and with tremendous speed increases. Compatibility issues didn't crop up until the migration from System 6 to System 7 and the introduction of the first 68040 Macintosh models.

I was thinking of putting an Atari emulator on port 23 so that people could telnet into an Atari emulator. It shouldn't be too difficult to do. Just create a guest account in Linux and set atari800.curses as the shell. So anyone that telneted in would get a 'READY' prompt and be stuck in the Atari BASIC interpreter. Telnet to a server on the other side of the world just for the privilege of being able to enter and run Atari BASIC code. lol. Maybe even login and boot SpartaDOS or some such. You should be able to run any Atari program that doesn't use graphics over telnet. lol. I think it would be funny.

oh brother.... let's see... telephone (but wait many telco's are voiping you without knowledge so pots become internet too!) hmmm vonage and magic jack are voip (already internet). and very few phone carriers don't digitize it all to a fiber backbone.... so... yes telco/ voip internet tcp/ip yes telnet which can get around a few things and what the old bang paths now too? btw any of the old timers can tell you they still work.
The idea is to give as many avenues as possible to connect. so why not? it's all semantics.

telnet is a protocol that typically operates on port 23.
Internet is the name of the global network of networks. i.e., It's a network of INTER-networked NETworks. The Internet is not a protocol. The Internet isn't really anything; it's more of a concept than anything else.
The telnet protocol can be used over the Internet, but you don't have to be on the Internet to use telnet.

Did mac ever castrate an 030 by putting it in a machine with a 16-bit bus architecture?If the 030 based macs had 32bit architecture then its not even fair to compare them to the falcon because they would have the potential to adress GIGs of ram, and actually utilize the full throughput of the 68030 processor, which the falcon cannot...

I believe the TT was the only Atari machine with a 32-bit bus, was it not? All 68030 based Macs were either 24-bit or 32-bit. They ran anywhere from 16MHz to 40MHz. The IIfx was the speed champ of the 68030 based Macs. It ran the 68030 processor at 40MHz on a 32-bit bus. Basic input/output tasks were offloaded to a pair of 6502 processors running at 10MHz so that the 68030 didn't have to bother with things like floppy disks, keyboards and mice, printers and modems, etcetera. The SCSI bus used direct memory addressing (DMA) and you could plunk a whopping 128MB of RAM in the sucker using 64pin SIMMs. There were 6 NuBus expansion slots and one 030 processor direct slot (PDS). Oh, and it had a 68882 floating point unit (FPU) for that silly math that you'll likely need if you wanna do some serious computing.

The ST was really popular in Germany for some reason. I could never figure that out. In Germany, STs were sold at Apple-like boutique style stores and for some reason the ST even managed to catch on as a "business class" machine in Germany. I could never reconcile the appeal of the ST to Germans with the idea of "Germans making good stuff". You would tend to think that "making good stuff" would be indicative of a people who appreciate quality. Yet, they adopted the ST line of computers like no other country on the planet, a line of computers that were in no way known for being quality machines.
Even now, if you search the Internet for interesting ST stuff, the really cool ST screenshots will almost exlusively feature a desktop in the German language.
NOTE:
The United States was the largest market for the Atari 16 and thirty-two bit computers. Germany was the second largest. With a population differential ratio of approximately ten to one in favour of the United States, it is quite probable that Germany was the largest Atari market per capita. Go figure!
