Bartzman sniped his way to three patch auction wins tonight, totalling close to $600 for 11 patches. He must have money to burn…

Indeed! Change was needed, and when Activision was at its classic best, the company set a new level that was desperately needed. Personally, I bought very few games from Atari as I found them decidedly inferior to Activision's offerings, with the random exceptions such as Haunted House. Ironically, the first two games I bought for the VCS were Defender and Chopper Command (I purchased Defender at the same time as my VCS). When I bought Chopper Command shortly thereafter, Defender simply collected dust.

Score!
in Atari 2600
This sounds innocent enough, but we all know that's how this obssession started for all of us...
1. Play the Atari 2600 again
2. Go out and look for games had as a kid
3. Once this is accomplished, go out and look for games wanted as a kid
4. Eventually, this turns into go out and look for anything Atari 2600
5. Uh oh, go out and look for any classic video game stuff (Colecovision, Intellivision, Odyssey2, etc.)
6. Classic video game stuff all of a sudden includes classic electronic toys (Mattel and Coleco handhelds and pong machines)
7. Go on eBay to look for games marked ER on VGR's list or R5+ on Digital Press guide
8. Start inventorying label variations
9. Go on Atari Age and posts goofy message
10. ...
This sounds disturbingly familiar...

H.E.R.O. would work well for me here.

H.E.R.O. or Frostbite all the way!

Very nice article if a bit short, but I suppose I should be thrilled that vintage games garner even the slightest bit of notice by a major player like Newsweek.
I have to agree that I wish more of this phiolosophy existed in modern games. From where I sit, quaint can be a very good thing, and these games can still entertain. My six-year-old thinks the Activision Anthology is great!
-
Well, I had a SNES, a genesis with the CD and the 32X, and my trusty old Atari 7800 was around somewhere. That last part tells you pretty much where I was in the retrogaming scene. I actually started that about this time of year in 1997.

Beauty and the Beast by Imagic is a great donkey kong clone for the INTV, it runs circles around the Coleco DK port
Back in the day, I would rather play Beauty and the Beast than any version of Donkey Kong!

I would also say that the WICO is a very good joystick for the 5200, as is the Competition Pro, when you can find one at a decent price. And the WICO keypad ROCKS!
Most people seem to have a bias against the stock joysticks because they have a history of reliability problems. The good news is that excellent rebuilt 5200 joysticks are readily available from various sources if you are interested, myself being one of them!
Feel free to PM if you'd like to discuss further. :wink:Actually, I believe I just bought one from you off E-bay; I also believe we left positive feedback for each other yesterday. My buyer name is jdzuber1.

Thanks!
I had heard the $50 figure before, but just wanted to know for sure. By the way, I have never owned one; I take it they are just as good as advertised?
-
What is a reasonable price to pay for one of these?
Thanks!

I have to agree that the endings of many Atari era games were less than exciting.

When I started reacquiring Ataris, I got a 7800 and a 2600. I figured that I would keep the 7800 and give my sister the 2600 as a gift. I'm sure glad that I kept the 2600 as well because I am finding quite a number of Activision cartridges that absolutely do not work on the 7800. So far, I can get nothing out of H.E.R.O., Dolphin or Decathalon. Okay maybe the two Ds are no big deal but H.E.R.O. seems like a fun game. How they could advertise the 7800 as able to play all 2600 carts is beyond me......anyway, I'll get off my "just justifying the money I'm spending on this hobby" soapbox. Like Dave Barry said, "There's a fine line between hobby and mental illness".
I realize this is no help, but I have no problem whatsoever with any of these games on my 7800 and that is the primary way I play my 2600 games, other than the Activision Anthology for the PS2.

Unfortunately, I decided to get back into Atari after I got married and had a baby. It is hard to justify to the wife...she just don't understand what the 2600 meant to my childhood. Sometimes I have to sneak off to look for Atari carts in the wild, and I just feel so dirty like I'm cheating on her. Well, not really, but that did sound funny as hell
I can sympathize about the wife; mine thinks that all video games are a pure and simple waste of time. Still, she shows more tolerance for the 2600 games than any of the rest.

I hear you and know exactly the bids to which you refer; I was sniped in the last 10 seconds on the Dragonstomper game, but at a price far less than the ones you mention.
My theory is that if people want the games badly enough to part with that sort of change, they need them far more than I.

Without a doubt I regret selling my VCS, Intellivision, Colecovision, and my games, especially all of my boxed Activision games!
At least you remember why you sold it; sadly, I cannot say the same. Not quite sure why, but I did hang on to my 7800. I still have it and use it to play the Activision games I have bought to replace my collection.
-
I was working at McDonald's at the time and bought Chopper Command soon after I bought my VCS. The distinct superiority of Activision's games was easy to see and I made it a goal to buy most of the games they subsequently released.

Years ago, I bought the cd of Activision games for the computer as I remembered them as being my favorites from my Atari days. Although they played fairly well, it just wasn't the same. As I now have an Atari again (thank god), I can play any the "real way" that I can get my hands on. One of the GBA games that I played (very briefly might I add) was Namco museum but everything was too small. Maybe I'm just too old.....anyway, on the flipside, it would be nice to be able to play some of the games that I've only heard about because they are rare carts.
I probably bought the same CD and had pretty much the same reaction. What it did do, however, was rekindle the fondness for the Activision games as well as prompt me to once again collect the games.
I just bought the Activision Anthology for the PS2 this week and am very impressed with it. Not all of the games play well, but it is a very well done collection. I love the patches and commercials extras, a very nice, nostalgic touch. My six-year-old son is also enjoying the games, which is a nice bonus.

My favorite game is likely to change on any given day, but for today:
Frostbite (2600)
H.E.R.O. (2600)
Keystone Kapers (2600)
Enduro (2600)
Dreadnaught Factor (Intellivision)
Beamrider (Intellivision)
Ice Trek (Intellivision)
AD&D--original (Intellivision)
Qix (Atari 5200)
Castlevania (NES)
-
As to the 3D entry, I have to confess that I was at first disappointed by the announcement, but the screenshots look promising. I can gaurantee that I will buy the game when it is released.
I only bought Legacy of Darkness this year from Ebay, and while it is not a bad game, it also did not feel like Castlevania. That is my main concern with the PS2 version.
-
I picked up Aria of Sorrow last weekend (on sale for $20) but sadly I haven't even had time to get into it yet. And just to make a point I went ahead and got Harmony of Dissonance too, so I have all three. If any game deserves three entries on the GBA, I'd say Castlevania is it.
Aria of Sorrow is quite a good game, even if the graphics are pretty stock, a la Symphony or Harmony. That said, the soul capture aspect adds new life to what might be another rehash, and the "good" ending is quite cool and a unique twist. Nuff said!

-
Any of the Castlevania games would be great. Circle of the Moon is probably the most difficult and Aria of Sorrow has some interesting changes in the basic CV storyline.

Activision Decathlon
Private Eye
Space Shuttle

Lest we forget Pitfall and Pitfall II: Lost Caverns.
(Thanks, Mr. Crane)

True, true...great games both. I have just been partial to the other two since I started rebuilding my collection back in 97.
