    I haven't posted here in a long time but, when I saw this thread on Facebook, I had to sign in to say how sad I am to hear of your suffering. You are such a great asset to the classic gaming community and a true CPU Wiz (I have at least one of your games) with rare knowledge and skill as well as a great friend to many here. You are in our thoughts.

    I make no secret that H.E.R.O. is my favorite Atari 2600 game of all time...and today I released a brand new Let's Play of the game to expose it to a new generation of gamers. I gave a shoutout to AtariAge in the video as well. Hope you like it!

    Not sure why they wouldn't be, according to the op as follows:

     

     

     

     

    That was posted 12 years ago when they were first brainstorming the list. A few posts down, they decided to include separate lists for homebrews and superchargers. Later, I think they stopped doing that. When I took over the compiling, I decided to not count them at all as most did not include them and, when it comes to homebrews, older ones would get more votes than later ones which weren't around at the time of voting and skew the totals.

    I love reading people's top tens; this is my goto post when I'm looking for something new to play :thumbsup:

     

    One thing that shows is up in the list is that common games rise to the top, since most people are voting based on their childhood collections or their current collections. Not many people have the carts or time to try out every game, and so a lot of rarer and less played gems get unfairly low places. We end up with a "favourite" list - but if we accounted for voters' playing experience we'd get closer to a "best" list.

     

    Points received by a rarer game are worth more since a smaller proportion of people has played it, and vice versa for very common games. We can use rarity as a proxy for the likelihood that the average voter has played a game. So a simple way to adjust the list is to multiply a game's score by its rarity - the resulting score should be a better marker of quality than popularity.

     

     

     

    That was very interesting, dark-aleph. Thanks for doing this. I think your list is definitely more accurate in determining the best games. One thing I've noticed compiling the lists is that many who post their lists have very few comments in this forum which leads me to believe a lot of the participants are casual fans of Atari and are only familiar with a few of the more popular games.

    170. Dragonstomper has to go, as you do not count Starpath Supercharger games. (If you did, my #1 of all time is Supercharger's "The Official Frogger" by Sega, c/o Sierra Online.)

    Time for an update. Because of a change to one participant's list, 2 games dropped from the list completely (Malagai and Night Stalker). Another game was removed by one person and then added back by another (Video Chess). What are the odds of that? :lolblue: Five games got votes for the first time: Flash Gordon, Off the Wall (might need to check that one out), Fire Fighter, Demolition Herby, and Obelix (never heard of those last two). H.E.R.O. is moving up in points, but not enough to overtake Space Invaders. Yars' Revenge leapfrogged Kaboom! for 8th place. Demon Attack moved from 16th to 14th.     I know nothing about programming, but I've read that, back in the day, you couldn't put much text in games. Prof Pac-Man has a lot of text as each problem has a sentence to ask the question. With technology as it is now, though, is a game with a lot of text like Prof Pac-Man possible? Could Prof Pac-Man be made into a 2600 game?

    I got an MAME downloaded and the Prof Pac-Man rom. The game comes up and I see the title screen, demo, and high scores, but I can't figure out how to start and play the game. I tried all kinds of keys but can't get it to start. I've never played a game on an MAME before. Has anyone played this game on an MAME who can help me? I'm using the one for Windows MAME 0.167 Windows command-line binaries.

    Just wanted to post that I had a great time at the event! I was very impressed by the turnout and all the arcade games. It was also well-organized with pizzas arriving on schedule and the movies being shown. I really enjoyed Nintendo Quest and related to it because I was on a quest, too. I've always wanted to play Professor Pac-Man and finally got the chance! I played it A LOT! Thanks to all involved in the event! It was definitely worth the drive to me!

    Time for an update. A lot of movement near the bottom of the list with games with few votes getting some love this round. Rampage, Kung Fu Master, and Krull were big winners. At the top of the list, River Raid leapfrogged Adventure and H.E.R.O. jumped over Kaboom! Enduro lost votes with people changing their lists. Four games received their first votes. Up 'N Down and Time Pilot were two of the newcomers. I was surprised they weren't already on the list. I won't add color anymore due to all the problems last time.

    Somewhat ironic, but you changed your vote from post #361, knocking Decathlon down a notch and removing its one first place vote. This one-point difference dropped Decathlon down to 72! I've always liked Decathlon; but it's a bit rough to play.
