Hopefully his bid isn't so huge that it holds up until the end and someone who really wants it and is responsible wins it. Tomorrow night is going to be crazy on the Air Raid bidding front! Will be fun to watch!
-
They're estimating it at $18,000 with box. I guess will find out soon if they are right.
-
That Save Our Ship game looks awesome! Was the NTSC of that game only released on that 32 in 1 cartridge?
-
Even if it plays on a US system?
-
Really?? I didn't know that. Just out of curiosity, what is an example of a pirate/hack US game that US collectors shy away from?
-
For the heck of it, I checked eBay for Q*Bert's Qubes. There is quite a range of Buy It Now prices (all loose): $499.99 $119.95 $99.95 $64.95 The guy selling it for $499.99 said it is "NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND!:, but when there are 4 on eBay at the same time, it kinda takes the steam out of that statement.
-
A completest would want all the games, especially those incredibly rare pirate hacks.
-
Whoever buys this game will probably never play it (or maybe just one time). It will probably be encased in a museum-quality, climate-controlled, nuclear-resistant chamber surrounded by security laser beams.

I see someone bid $12,000 with only a feedback of 2 which was canceled. That's very smart to set a feedback requirement. I don't know about this person, of course, but to some people it's just playing with numbers. They don't expect to actually have to pay for it in the end.
-
I've never run into that problem as an eBay seller. Sure would be nice, though.
-
I've had Private Eye since I was a kid. It's a cute game. Definitely unique. I never was good enough to earn the Activision patch, though I don't have Taz, but it sounds like a cool game. I like the label, anyway.
-
Thanks! I'll give that a try next time.

He found the box after the auction was posted and getting bids. I don't think you can change an auction once it starts getting bid, right?
-
Well, from my limited understanding of the situation, that seems to have been the case. However, after seeing this box, the name came from somewhere else, perhaps a previous owner of the game that lost the box and completely forgot how he knew the name or some crazy River Raid fan who dubbed it Air Raid, or the box is, indeed fake and meant only to raise our hopes of official recognition of the subject. I wondered about the name "Air Raid" on the box, too, but Mr. Galaxian pointed out that Terry Rutt stated in an article verifying that Air Raid was the name of the game. It's on page 3 of this thread (sorry, I don't know how to link to specific posts).

I didn't think you could cancel an eBay auction once there were bids on it. Awesome find, though!!!! Great-looking cover!!! AND now we know the game was actually called "Air Raid"! From what I've read, even the name of the cartridge was just speculation. I live in Austin. I don't have the expertise to verify its authenticity, but I'd sure like to see it in person! Even though you have to sell the box separately, I'd like the person how gets the cartridge to also get the box so that they stay together. It's just the sentimental former history student in me.

Oh, I just noticed, it's Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man on her brassiere. I guess she's, uh, Bi-chompual--(I can't think of a good Pac-term for that).

Tried to find - and failed - where'd the funny box art captions go?
Miss 2600 replied to tiggerthehun's topic in Atari 2600
I've thought that since I was a kid! And I thought the girl next to him looked like MacKenzie Phillips. -
Ha! That woman has a ghost under her flap...a BLUE ghost which means Pac-Man could...well, you know.
-
I've collected Pac-Man memorabilia since I was a kid and there have been many different styles of Pac-Man. I've always thought of Pac-Man in a 2-dimensional form like the 2600 box: Or, if he is 3-dimensional, he'd be flat on the sides like this: I never thought of him as a sphere, and certainly not with feet: And this classic Pac-Man image never made sense to me: So, what image do you think of when you think of Pac-Man (if you ever think of such things)?
-
Yes! I love the music in those games. Pitfall II had the little snare drum sound and Bump 'N' Jump had the cutest tune (although, I guess that one could get tiring after a while). Both those games are in my top 10 for game play, too!

Pac-Man was mentioned several times on this thread. I don't thinks it's depressing. The color scheme was dull, but it had cute little Pac-Man and the Ghosts. I like the box art with Pac-Man the way I like to think of him, in legless 2 dimensional form and not a sphere, eating a wafer. I guess it is sad that he is always hungry and never satisfied.

Awesome find! It's so fun to find things like that in the wild! There was a records store where I come from called Dimple Records that sold Atari games. They weren't that cheap if I remember correctly. Maybe $2.99-$3.99 each which, to me, is much more than I expect them to be in the wild. They were common games, though. Even at their prices I would jump at the games you got as I don't have most of them.

Nice find, little Adventure square guy! That reminds me of when I was a kid and my folks wanted to find this yard sale. It was way out in the middle of nowhere. We almost turned back. When we got there, though, we found a bonanza! I was a big Monkees fan at the time as their TV show ran in syndication during the 1980s. This family had over 100 teen magazines from the 1960s like 16, Spec, Tiger Beat, and some obscure ones plus a vintage Monkees shirt. We got everything for next to nothing. A few years back, I started selling the magazines one-by-one on eBay. Some sold for $30+ each. One I got over $70 for. I ended up making over $1500 for those magazine. I still have the shirt. I've never seen another one like it. I have no idea what it is worth but it must be super rare. It just shows you can find treasures in the most unexpecting places.

I started this thread a looooong time ago, and thought I'd revive it to hear about other success stories out in the wild. My best find is still the Waterworld manual on the floor of a thrift store and Stargunner with the color label for $1, but I can add Guardian to my list of prized finds in the wild, also in a thrift store. I also bought Spy Hunter from a friend who was given an Atari 2600 with a bunch of games (as well as Crypts of Chaos which isn't as rare, but I didn't have it). It has been a long time since I've been game hunting. What have you folks found?

When I first started reading this thread I thought of Berserk. Even the walls will kill you and there are no friends and no way out. There is solace, though, when you kill all the robots and are alone (I can't remember if Ottos keep coming at you or if there is only one per screen). Only in complete isolation is there peace. I agree with the other poster who mentioned Defender. You watch a humanoid you are protecting being taken up by the enemy and you cannot help him in time. Or you shoot the enemy but can't catch the humanoid and watch him plunge to his death, or you just hear the scream while you're fighting enemies elsewhere and you know that you'll just have to let that humanoid go.
