Once again, I'm carrying the TurboGrafx flag. The system is known to have a shmup heavy library with excellent shooters such as Raiden, R-Type, Blazing Lazers, Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade, Gates of Thunder (CD), Lords of Thunder (CD), and Air Zonk.
But also, this generation of consoles had many great shooters including the Thunder Force series and M.U.S.H.A. (Genesis), and UN Squadron (SNES). The Turbo has awesome shooters, but can be difficult (and sometimes expensive) to collect for. If you have a Wii, I recommend using the Virtual Console for more expensive titles.

I bought this one when it first came out. Loved it and played it a lot. I've always liked the Castlevania series, and this was great. (only 3D one I've ever played is the latest one for 360 though)
But I got this on XBLA and played it some. It just doesn't hold my interest like it used to. I still think it's a fun game, but the Metroid-vania style of the game has been refined so much since this one, that I just got bored with it this time around.
I still think it is/was a great game and deserving of its accolades, but, for me at least, it hasn't withstood the test of time.

I've wanted one since the TTI days. But I've never found one that I could really justify the price of. But if I found one for $5 like someone up above claimed, I'd be all over it.

Star Fox is a really popular game. Much celebrated.
But I never really liked it much. My brother in law had a SNES and we rented Star Fox. It was okay. We had fun. But I just didn't like it as much as the 2D shooters. The textureless shaded polygons looked terrible to me. 3D flying games didn't get awesome for me until the Playstation and Warhawk. Loved that game although it's really not THAT much different than Star Fox (although perhaps better looking and with a bit more freedom of movement.)

I don't really have many memories of the SMS from "back in the day." I remember there was a friend who I thought must be rich because he had both and SMS and the NES (with R.O.B.). But the only couple of times I went to his house, we played NES or rode bikes all day. Just didn't mess with the Sega much.
Later in life, as I began to buy systems I missed out on in my youth, the SMS was one I bought. I remember playing quite a bit of Double Dragon, Enduro Racer and Shanghai. I didn't get a lot of games (although I seem to have bought the system from a Stallone fan, as it game with the games Rocky, Rambo, and Rambo III, lol).

Usually an asterisk (or three) is enough to make the word lost on the handful of children that may be viewing the forums, while still making sense for the rest of the adults here.
I guess. But I would imagine that any kids that are interested enough in old video games to come here and read posts is probably old enough that they'll be able to figure it out.
But I guess it is analogous to the black bars over nipples in porn (or pixelation or whatever).
Oops... guess I should have spelled that *n*logous... lol

Question: Why are people in this thread putting asterisks in the words. I've just never understood this. Does writing cockface as c*ckface make it any less offensive to someone who would find it offensive? I mean, it's not like we don't know what the words are. Isn't it the idea of the word the offensive part? Not the spelling? Is it not offensive if I call someone a dikfayce just because I misspelled it?
I don't find them offensive. Just asking why people do this. If you're afraid of offending someone, don't put it at all. I doubt someone who is offended by something like the word "cunt" is going to say "Oh, well at least they didn't put the u in it." if you spelled it "c*nt."
BTW, I understand if this is a way to get around a language filter. But is there one here?

It's not SMS specific. I've had it happen to my TurboGrafx. I may post pics at some point, but right now the box with the styrofoam is buried under some other boxes. But you can see in the styrofoam where the cable was, IIRC. It didn't stick to the system or game case (my copy of Keith Courage was in there, too), just the cables. Must be something about the plastic in the cables themselves or a combo of that plastic and the styrofoam over periods of time. They were always stored indoors in a house in a closet or something. Never subjected to extremes of heat, nor to any strange chemicals.

Like others, I'm only going to include ones that aren't that obscure...
Vectrex
Colecovision
Intellivision
Neo Geo
Sega 32x
TurboGrafx-CD (I've played games from it on the Wii Virtual Console, but not the system itself.)
Atari ST
Any Atari 8-bit computer
N-Gage
C64
Channel F
And I'm sure several others, but I'm not going to go through and list all the hundreds of pong clones I never played...

Yep, I was gonna recommend this. He does lists for Halloween and Summer, too.

A hammer. Oh... you're probably still wanting it to work afterwards... never mind...

My first response was going to be, "No, I still want them all!" But looking at it realistically, and thinking about my past decision making, I'm going to agree. I have a Wii and an XBox 360. I want a PS3 just to have them all because I have a hardware collector bug, but I've told myself before that it's just not worth the price. The 360 and the PS3 share so many games, and one version is not really that much better than the other (and at any rate, when one is claimed to be better, I fear that fanboyism is the deciding factor). And when I looked at system exclusives for PS3, I just didn't feel that they justified the purchase. The last game that made me want a PS3 was Gran Turismo 5, but I just held off and got Forza 4 and I'm happy.

Only when I have to move it.

I'd also recommend the TurboGrafx... but then, I'm biased as it is pretty much my favorite system (said in a Napoleon Dynamite voice). Last time I looked around, the base systems weren't too expensive. Some of the games were a little pricey. And I think there has been some renewed interest in the system because of the Wii Virtual Console. There are some great games available on the CD format, but that is where the systems start getting expensive. It seems difficult to find a CD system by itself, as they are mostly sold with the base system. So if you plan on getting the CD attachment, you might want to get it right away, or else if you decide to get it later, you may have to end up purchasing a second base system just to get the CD. Or you could just go all out and get a TurboDuo, and you're set for whatever.
But, I will say that if you're looking for something different with "unique" games, the TG is a great choice.

My sister surprised me one Christmas when she was working at WalMart. She got me an NES, Metal Gear, Castlevania, and 1943. I had played Castlevania and 1943 before when I rented a system (remember when you could do that?), but had never heard of Metal Gear.
My dad and step-mom got me my TurboGrafx for a later Christmas. My mom, who lived out of town, took me shopping and told me what they got so I could pick out some stuff I wanted. (Got Legendary Axe, TurboTap, and a second controller).

- I've only ever had one broken bone in my life. And it was because of anger at a video game. The second Koopa Race on Super Mario 64. I kept long jumping off the cliffs or getting blown off course by wind. I punched the floor next to me and broke my hand. I told everyone I was running for the phone and accidentally hit a door.
- I still remember my best friend and I staying up all night playing and finally beating a rented game. We actually saw the sun come up in the morning while getting fresh air on his back patio. That isn't necessarily shameful, but when you add in the fact that the game was Mickey Mousecapade...
- Every time I get a new game, the first thing I do is take the manual to the bathroom and read it while sitting on the toilet. With games lately, this has not been very satisfying as the quality of manuals have really gone down the shitter...
- When my daughter was about four or so, I tried teaching her how to play Mario Kart Double Dash on the 2 player vs game. I never let her win.

I'm thankful for the little things. Having the correct power supplies so that I don't blow up circuits. Controller connectors without bent pins. Blinking lights on the tree, and not on the NES. Games that I can play for five minutes or five hours and get just as much fun out of them. A reliable electricity provider and a job with which to pay them.

I guess he didn't really "keep" it, but my brother in law sold all his SNES stuff so he could get a Genesis to play Sonic Spinball back in the day... I thought he was crazy.

Gary Garcia, half of Buckner and Garcia, died. Famous for the song Pac-Man Fever... I had a poster with they lyrics on it.

I only have one game for my N64, Super Mario 64.
I might get more one day, but for now, it's the only one I want for it.
You gotta get Golden Eye! I rocked that game sideways back in the day!
B
Yeah, I considered it. Even saw it in a store recently (cartridge only) for $4, but passed. I remember playing it a lot, but can't remember if we rented it or owned it. I've just never been much of a FPS player. But I do remember it as being pretty fun.

A combination of hydrochloric acid and lava. They come out spotless... and plasticless... and metalless...
But honestly, I kinda agree with Vertigo. Ask ten different people and you'll probably get about six or seven different answers...
I've used pencil erasers and alcohol soaked cotton swabs before though.
