  1. I had GT, GT2 for the Playstation. The PS2 I bought (fat one) was the GT3 Aspec bundle. I have not played GT since that. I do not have a PS3. I have a 360 and have played both Forza III and Forza IV. I considered buying a PS3 at one time, just for GT5. Glad I didn't. Not because I think GT5 sucks. I have no idea since I've never played it. But I do love the Forza series now.

  2. I've heard of people putting printed-circuit boards in a dishwasher also, though I've never done it myself.

Same here. I used to work for an electronics repair shop, and there was a dishwasher in the receiving area just for this purpose. There were a couple of techs who would put boards in there, although I'm not sure what the reason was nor what the settings on the dishwasher were.

They would also sometimes put the cases in there to clean them up if they came in dirtier than usual.

And these were items a little more expensive than your average video game console. Things like this: http://www.testequipmentconnection.com/products/6465 (btw, this link is NOT where I used to work, I just did a quick google search to find one with a price.)

  3. I have Phantasy Star Collection for the Gameboy Advance. I have PSIII separately for my Genesis. I also have Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for my 360.

I still have never finished a Phantasy Star game.

A slightly related question, does anyone have Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast? Is it worth it to get it for the offline mode?

  4. Love Legendary Axe. I also had a way to farm extra lives to help later in the game in this one. lol... In the video at about 6:20, there's an area in zone 3a where you get an extra man. I used to get all those gems for extra points, get the extra man, back track some, then fall off a ledge. When I respawned, all the statues were back allowing me to get the points and extra man again. Rinse, repeat. It's a little tedious and can take a while to get the extra lives from points, but hey, it works. (I also had a theory which I could never quite prove... the statues glow red, then blue, then red again... I always thought that the size of the gem depended on the color that the statue was glowing when you hit it. If you look closely, it looks like he gets the two big gems when the statue is at about the same brightness... Same with the health orbs when its red... or something like that...)

  5. Thanks for the info. Not trying to turn this not a Blazing Lazers thread but I tried that strategy of getting a bunch of extra on that level that looks like your in a body. I noticed that I wasn't getting any points by destroying the green orbs that the thing shot out and just assumed that extra lives depended on score so I stopped and just killed the thing. Am I missing something with this strategy?

Thanks again for the info in the purple orbs.

It wasn't green orbs. There's one mid point boss that is just like eight eyeballs (four on either side of the screen) that open and close and spit homing eyeballs at you. It's at about the 19 min mark in this video.

  6. I put some time into Blazing Lazers this morning and I think it was area 7 but it completely kicked my butt. I'm still trying to figure out the weapons system. I kind of got the numbers down and what they do but the purple orbs? Sometimes they do something other times they don't and it seems when they do do something it's diffent than what they did before.

I haven't even figured out what the purple obs do at all. I just assumed they were bonus points or something. There is always so much going on on screen its hard to keep track off whats happening. I wish the weaspons were represented by icons similar to their appearance, I'm having trouble remembering which numbers represent what.

The purple orbs are another way to power up your weapon, but it takes more than one per level. Like, say if you get the III weapon orb and get a blue laser. You can either power up to the second level of the laser by getting another orb with a III on it, or get the purple orbs. According to the manual:

"When an enemy is destroyed, a purple ball may appear. By collecting the following number of power-up balls, you can increase your Star Fighter's weapon level accordingly.

    Level 0 to level 1 - 1 ball.

    Level 1 to level 2 - 2 balls

    Level 2 to level 3 - 4 balls

    Level 3 to level 4 - 8 balls

    Level 4 to level 5 - 12 balls

    Level 5 to level 6 - 16 balls"

So the times when it seems like it didn't do anything, it's like it was probably just the third ball into level three or something and you need more to increase the level again. It'd be nice if there were some kind of meter that showed you how far you had to go to get to the next level or something, but there's not. And of course, as mentioned, just getting an orb with the same roman numeral on it as the weapon you are currently using will automatically bump you up to the next level, but I'm not sure how this affects the count on the power up orbs.

  7. Moto Roader!

fun racing game in the style of a RC Pro Am or Micro Machines… and also great with 5 players!

and I paid $59.99 for Splatterhouse… but then that was in 1990! Turbo Grafx games were quite expensive for some titles back then...

Yeah, I remembered Moto Roader. I rented it ''back in the day.'' I didn't like that if a car fell behind and hit the side of the screen, it would be shot forward. It actually made catching back up a little harder because you often were facing the wrong way and just kept bouncing. Also, I never liked Splatterhouse. (ducking while things are being thrown at me) It always just seemed boring. Too straight forward and linear. I always felt it was only popular because it was gory. (I feel the same way about some songs in that I think they are crap songs that are only popular because they have some ''dirty'' word in it.) But that's just me. If you like it, go for it.

So my copy of Blazing Lazers arrived to day and wow is it fun! Definitely up there with the best shooters I've played, I managed to get through the first 2 levels and part of the 3rd on my first go, difficulty feels just perfect, its not easy but its also not bash your head into the wall hard.

There are a couple of tricks in Blazing Lazers, too. On the first stage, with the big space ship that breaks into three parts and moves around, if you can just dodge the shots and ship parts and let it go through its entire dance, the three pieces will fly off the screen and you'll get a big bonus and stuff. Also, and this is one that I found, on the stage that looks like you're inside of some monster intestine or something (the one with all the brains flying at you) there is a mid point boss that is just a bunch of eyes that come after you. If you have weapon IV to full power (with the four orbs circling you, not necessarily the "full power" power up), you can just sit at the bottom of the screen and let them come at you and destroy themselves on the orbs. You can sit there as long as you like and let them kill themselves on your orb shield racking up points and extra lives. I used to do this, then go to school, come back and have a crap load of lives with which to play the rest of the game. (Although, you have to be careful and watch it for a bit, sometimes an eye can slip through. I found it best to be just to one side of center at the bottom of the screen.) There's also a level select and music player that can be accessed via a controller input code at the title screen IIRC, but I don't remember the code.

My personal favorite weapon on Blazing Lazers was the blue lasers powered up to the third level so you have one that shoots straight ahead, and two that squiggle on either side.

  8. I got my Blazing Lazers for free. :-D When I got my TG, it came with a coupon you could send in for a free game. Just cut off the UPC, check a box on a list of games, and send it off. Of course this was in the early 90's when the system was new. lol

But it's definitely one I would suggest.

    shmups: Blazing Lazers, Raiden, R-Type

    platformers: Bonk's Revenge

    RPG: Neutopia II

    hack n slash: Ninja Spirit

    strategy: Military Madness

sports: World Class Baseball, World Court Tennis (which is kind of a Tennis/RPG)

pinball: Devil's Crush (kind of a sequel to Alien Crush, but with scrolling playfield and occult themed tables)

    racing: um... none?

Not sure on costs on these, but they are some of my favorites based on genre.

  9. Good vid! I love shmup's but I'm never really that good at them. Of the ones reviewed, I have Truxton and Thunder Force II. Truxton is pretty fun, but as mentioned, difficult. (And yeah, the Satan bomb is a plus!) Thunder Force II is not as good, in my opinion, as Thunder Force III. But that's probably because the overhead, go anywhere stages give me trouble and TF III doesn't have those. I do like me some Raiden, too. But I don't have Raiden Trad for the Genesis, I have Raiden for the TurboGrafx. I liked that you mentioned Tiger Heli, as it does remind me of that game. However, Twin Cobra looks even more like a straight graphical upgrade to Tiger Heli if only because of the helicopter theme.

I'd love to see one of these multiple shmup review vids for the TG-16 if you have one and several shmup's. The Turbo seems to have a big reputation as a shmup lover's machine, given how prevalent the genre is in the TurboGrafx library.

  10. In one of the Contra games, there was an arcade you could go in and play games. I don't remember what games they were now...

Also, on one of the Metal Gear games for the Playstation there's Psycho Mantis thing where it looks at your memory card, sees if there are any other Konami games on there, then mentions them.

  11. I've owned the same TurboGrafx since it was bought new for me for Christmas in about 1991 or so. Both the Genesis and the Turbo were options for me and I devoured every bit of information on the two systems (which at that time, came mainly from magazines). The Genesis had intrigued me because the SMS had always been a mystery to me having been an NES owner. But the Turbo's options for expansion were what finally won me over. It had a CD add on that could play games on compact disc! There was a handheld version that used the same games as the console! There was even a game called JJ & Jeff! (Explanation: I am a James Jr., so my family called me J.J. for short up until high school and my best friend since kindergarten was named Jeff. What a coincidence!) And there was a deal where, if you bought a Turbo, you could fill out a form and send in the UPC from the box to get a free game!

I convinced my parents to get me a TG-16. Showing them the upgrade options, the free game deal, and the JJ & Jeff game. Well, they got me the system and had to drive to a neighboring state to get one with the free game card in it. (I chose Blazing Lazers, since I had played it in an electronics store in the local mall.) That Christmas, I got the system, a turbotap, an extra controller, Legendary Axe, and Blazing Lazers came in the mail in a month or so.

The OP's comment that his friend only knew one other person that owned a Turbo? That kid was lucky, lol. I didn't know ANYONE who had one. I only had three games and really didn't ever buy any more. There was only one store that rented games for it (a Hasting's Music store), so I would do that. Eventually, the Genesis proved far more popular and the SNES arrived. They started to sell off their Turbo rental games because of poor demand and I picked up World Class Baseball, Military Madness and Psychosis. A little while later, I discovered used games showing up in pawn shops where I bought World Court Tennis and Alien Crush. Later still, when TurboTechnologies Inc took over distribution of the Turbo in the US, I ordered Time Cruise, TV Sports Football, and a controller extension. (Time Cruise has since been lost.) Then eBay became a source, where I obtained Bonk's Adventure and Revenge, Devil's Crush, Raiden, R-type, and, finally, the previously mentioned JJ & Jeff. (I've since "bought" several games on the Wii Virtual Console.)

This is all just to say that, after the initial purchase by my parents, the only time I ever bought anything new for my Turbo was the stuff ordered from TTI. The CD and TurboExpress were too expensive for me to try to convince my parents to buy them. And soon, it was difficult to find games to ask for as presents. I didn't have my own job, so it wasn't like I could go out and buy my own, either.

My brother-in-law got a SNES on release day and we played Super Mario World all night. Later, he sold his SNES and got a Genesis because he wanted to play Sonic Pinball (a questionable move in my opinion, but he didn't ask me). But I didn't get another new system until I got my own job and bought a Playstation. (This was of course prior to starting to go back and collect TG games on eBay and such.) I never again owned the less popular option. After Playstation, I got a Playstation2, then an Xbox 360. (Of course now I own several of them as the collection grows.)

Why the Hell did I type such a long post about this? It's Sunday morning, I'm bored, and it seemed like the thing to do.

  13. I remember playing River Raid for hours on end. I just loved playing it. It was a challenge and different. I eventually got a score good enough to send in a screenshot for a patch. Also played quite a bit of Yars Revenge and Star Master. After the 2600, I have a lot of memories of playing NES games such as Castlevania, Metal Gear, 1943, and of course Super Mario Brothers. I actually got all four of these games when I got the NES. At the time, I had played Castlevania, 1943, and SMB, and just kinda looked at the Metal Gear game and said, "Meh, never heard of it." I few weeks into playing, I finally gave Metal Gear a chance and it was great fun. To this day, that Castlevania (the first one), and that Metal Gear (the first one) are the only ones in their respective series that I have completed.
