Gamers are ready for a return to World War II
Eltigro replied to xg4bx's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I'd like to see some alternate reality WWII type games. Where maybe the war continued into more modern times and maybe the Nazis are still around and we're still fighting them with more modern fictional weapons based on and styled to look like WWII weapons. Kind of like Resistance but without the alien-ish thing going on. -
My copy of Super Mario 64 has "WHITE" written on the back. My NES Blaster Master has a sticker that says "PAUL" on it (I've never bothered taking it off.) My NES Metal Gear has "STEPHENS" written on the front. My NES Rush 'N Attack has "WR" written on the front, not sure if it was initials or what. The only one I have with a first and last name is NES Jackal. It has "Mike Ricos" written on the label.

Most overrated games in your opinion
Eltigro replied to Animan's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Pilotwings and Starfox. Never did enjoy either one of those, but apparently a lot of people did. -
This must be the reason why they never let Link speak in the games...

Why was speech synthesis such a big deal?
Eltigro replied to boxpressed's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yeah, anything other than a square wave was awesome. I remember arguing with people over what some of the scratchy synthesized voices were actually saying. (Same with the digitized voices on games in the "16-bit era.") -
Some of my faves...

Actually this reminds me... long ago, before online gaming was huge and all they had were those mech games where you got into a little pod thing and they were all connected via cables, I envisioned a WWII bombing game where you were part of a B-17 bomber crew (or similar plane like a B-24 or Lancaster). You had a pilot, a gunner/bombadier, tail gunner, ball gunner, and two waist gunners (and maybe a radio man or navigator who manned another gun). You would fly simulated missions over German targets and get back again. In my original version, it would take hours to complete a game from take off, flight over the Channel, flight over the target and back again. With flak to avoid, fighters to shoot down, a target to bomb, and so on. On the trip back, the plane would be lighter and fly faster but might be damaged so it was no cake walk. Of course each position would be different enough that it would take some practice and skill to be proficient at it and rankings for individual positions could be posted based on stats peculiar to that position. I wouldn't want people always fighting over who got to be the pilot or whatever. I'd hope people would practice at one position to be the best they could be at that position. Of course for today's online gaming this could be shortened so that the more boring uneventful parts were skipped, but I always thought that part of the fun/immersion of the game would be the waiting and watching for incoming fighters. Also, there could be others who were flying escort fighters or other bombers with their crews. Perhaps entire teams of people all flying in one simulated raid. And it could go the other way, too with German bombers flying over English targets with appropriate planes and positions and escort fighters... And of course, those fighters you were trying to shoot down could be other people playing the other side... And anything that didn't have an actual player could be simulated by the computer... tail gunner grounded (pun intended), the computer would take over that position. Picturing it kind of like playing a game of Rock Band when your drummer isn't there... he doesn't sign in so the drumming is done automatically. Of course, the computer controlled gunner isn't perfect and its skill level is based on the skill levels of the rest of the team. But anyway, that was a game idea that I thought up long ago. It would probably work great for XBL or PSN as long as enough people were interested in the idea.

Was the PSPGo kneecapped? (sabotaged)
Eltigro replied to ComputerSpaceFan's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I wouldn't doubt that retailers might've been a little reluctant to sell it. It would be like asking Exxon to sell electric cars. But I don't think they were that instrumental in its failure. They probably just looked at it as a sale. As long as the PSP that used actual hard copies of software (or however you wanna describe it) was still being sold, I don't think they cared that much. I think it was a sales thing. I'm okay with buying a console that uses both discs and downloaded software. I have a Wii and a 360 and have lots of downloaded games on both as well as discs. But I don't think people want to be tied down to one or the other (although I do know some people are very against downloaded games and prefer an actual copy on disc). -
I guess I'm kind of a weirdo. I'm not really a hunter. I don't go out and try to complete collections or whatever. My big thing, after playing, is just having them sitting next to my TV. I enjoy looking at them. Sometimes I'll just pick a game with a nice attract mode and put it in while I do chores or something. Hearing and seeing it play in the background. Thinking about how the old technology in them still works and the fact that several of them are set up and ready to go at a moment's notice is kind of comforting. I'm not into the huge collections. I bought my Jaguar as a lot with several games and have never bought another one for it. I have one game for my N64 and haven't bothered buying any more. I seem to like collecting the hardware more than the software.

Gameinformer grades launch lineups
Eltigro replied to 8th lutz's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yeah, I didn't have the 64 back in the day, but I bought Shadows for my Brother in Law for Christmas. It was okay, the Hoth Snowspeeder part was the highlight, but all the on foot sections felt like he was on ice or not really a part of the environment. I also remember playing Dark Forces (or maybe it was Dark Forces II) and enjoyed it quite a bit. I still remember parts of it and can hear the music playing in the background. -
I don't know why everyone is talking about this being illegal. A little lighter fluid, some matches... as long as you don't destroy anyone else's property when you're burning your 3DO disks, it should be perfectly legal. Unless there's a burning ban because of drought or there is some kind of issue with harmful chemicals released when the plastic melts/burns. What? Oh... I see... never mind... yeah, that's probably illegal.

Gameinformer grades launch lineups
Eltigro replied to 8th lutz's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Did I miss the grade for the SNES? Didn't see it on there. Also, only two games for the N64 and it got an A rating? I believe it. If only because Super Mario 64 was/is such an amazing game. -
I've always loved the NES Castlevania box art.
-
I'll also go with some of the Master System box art. Especially the Sega Card games... I mean... they didn't even try.

Whats the best way to Clean NES Carts
Eltigro replied to jig_man2's topic in Classic Console Discussion
A combination of hydrochloric acid and lava. They come out spotless... and plasticless... and metalless... But honestly, I kinda agree with Vertigo. Ask ten different people and you'll probably get about six or seven different answers... I've used pencil erasers and alcohol soaked cotton swabs before though. -
best consoles for shmups and must haves for those systems
Eltigro replied to so_tough!'s topic in Classic Console Discussion
Once again, I'm carrying the TurboGrafx flag. The system is known to have a shmup heavy library with excellent shooters such as Raiden, R-Type, Blazing Lazers, Super Star Soldier, Soldier Blade, Gates of Thunder (CD), Lords of Thunder (CD), and Air Zonk. But also, this generation of consoles had many great shooters including the Thunder Force series and M.U.S.H.A. (Genesis), and UN Squadron (SNES). The Turbo has awesome shooters, but can be difficult (and sometimes expensive) to collect for. If you have a Wii, I recommend using the Virtual Console for more expensive titles. -
I need help with finding name of game
Eltigro replied to Valerie Hall's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I was actually talking to someone about Qix today at work. lol -
I bought this one when it first came out. Loved it and played it a lot. I've always liked the Castlevania series, and this was great. (only 3D one I've ever played is the latest one for 360 though) But I got this on XBLA and played it some. It just doesn't hold my interest like it used to. I still think it's a fun game, but the Metroid-vania style of the game has been refined so much since this one, that I just got bored with it this time around. I still think it is/was a great game and deserving of its accolades, but, for me at least, it hasn't withstood the test of time.

A Turbo-Duo Sysyem New For $47,000+ Dollars?
Eltigro replied to fdurso224's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've wanted one since the TTI days. But I've never found one that I could really justify the price of. But if I found one for $5 like someone up above claimed, I'd be all over it. -
Star Fox is a really popular game. Much celebrated. But I never really liked it much. My brother in law had a SNES and we rented Star Fox. It was okay. We had fun. But I just didn't like it as much as the 2D shooters. The textureless shaded polygons looked terrible to me. 3D flying games didn't get awesome for me until the Playstation and Warhawk. Loved that game although it's really not THAT much different than Star Fox (although perhaps better looking and with a bit more freedom of movement.)

Sega Master System games and memories..
Eltigro replied to Austin's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I don't really have many memories of the SMS from "back in the day." I remember there was a friend who I thought must be rich because he had both and SMS and the NES (with R.O.B.). But the only couple of times I went to his house, we played NES or rode bikes all day. Just didn't mess with the Sega much. Later in life, as I began to buy systems I missed out on in my youth, the SMS was one I bought. I remember playing quite a bit of Double Dragon, Enduro Racer and Shanghai. I didn't get a lot of games (although I seem to have bought the system from a Stallone fan, as it game with the games Rocky, Rambo, and Rambo III, lol). -
I guess. But I would imagine that any kids that are interested enough in old video games to come here and read posts is probably old enough that they'll be able to figure it out. But I guess it is analogous to the black bars over nipples in porn (or pixelation or whatever). Oops... guess I should have spelled that *n*logous... lol

Question: Why are people in this thread putting asterisks in the words. I've just never understood this. Does writing cockface as c*ckface make it any less offensive to someone who would find it offensive? I mean, it's not like we don't know what the words are. Isn't it the idea of the word the offensive part? Not the spelling? Is it not offensive if I call someone a dikfayce just because I misspelled it? I don't find them offensive. Just asking why people do this. If you're afraid of offending someone, don't put it at all. I doubt someone who is offended by something like the word "cunt" is going to say "Oh, well at least they didn't put the u in it." if you spelled it "c*nt." BTW, I understand if this is a way to get around a language filter. But is there one here?
-
It's not SMS specific. I've had it happen to my TurboGrafx. I may post pics at some point, but right now the box with the styrofoam is buried under some other boxes. But you can see in the styrofoam where the cable was, IIRC. It didn't stick to the system or game case (my copy of Keith Courage was in there, too), just the cables. Must be something about the plastic in the cables themselves or a combo of that plastic and the styrofoam over periods of time. They were always stored indoors in a house in a closet or something. Never subjected to extremes of heat, nor to any strange chemicals.
