  1. I feel you kepone...

Ive been beat out too many times by a sniper...

What sucks is the programs... if Im going to bid and sit there and watch it at teh end, it pisses me off for a program to snipe it. Don't get me wrongk it pisses me off when a person does it, but it pisses me off less than someone who can't even sit there at the end of an auction.

I really think snipers just really hurt the atmosphere of ebay and shouldnt be allowed.

Hurts the atmosphere of eBay? Shouldn't be allowed? What the fuck is wrong with you people? IT'S STILL A LEGAL BID, fer chrissakes! Don't want to get sniped? Put up a high max bid and you won't lose. What is eBay supposed to do, leave the last minute of every auction you bid on open just for you so you can get the high bid? I mean, really...

I am SO tired of hearing people whine about the fact that someone actually wanted to pay more than they did for an auction item and then blame the fact that they 'got sniped' for losing the auction. You lost the auction because someone bid higher than you. If anyone wants to refute this, I'm all ears. Bid sniping will be around forever, it's not going anywhere.

Here's the typical scenario I hear all the time: Someone wants something on eBay thats at $20 with three days left. So, they put a $30 bid on it. Then, at the last second, someone else bids $31. The original bidder is now pissed off that he got sniped. If the original bidder REALLY wanted the item that badly, he should have put up a bid of something like $75. You put in as much as you would ever want to pay UP FRONT, so if the price goes over $75, you can at least tell yourself that whoever bid that much deserves it for that price. Seems like common sense to me.

And yes, many eBayers think like the person in the last paragraph, or else I would have never been able to win every every single item I've ever bought on eBay since 1999 by sniping in the last 10 seconds. It works!

  2. I had two VERY obscure favorites back in the day:

    1. King and Balloon - kind of a goofy concept, I honestly can't say why I like this game so much. I still play it in MAME all the time.

    2. The Electric Yo-Yo - another pretty strange game but I was totally addicted to it. Frustrating as hell and also some VERY annoying sounds when you die.

If you haven't tried either of these yet, fire up MAME and give 'em a shot!

  3. Yeah, it seems like a cool package but the whole thing runs like CRAP on my system.  I would think a 3 gig P4 and a Geforce FX 5900 Ultra would be enough to handle this!  Every game I've tried runs at less than half speed, even at 320x240!  Sigh...

Odd... my system is like a 1.4 something gig p4 and it runs it just great. Something must not be setup on your system correctly.

How much RAM do you have?

1 gig of DDR 3300. I'm going to try re-installing the game tonight and give it one more try. I have many, many games installed right now and this is the first one I've ever had a problem with on this system.

  4. Yeah, it seems like a cool package but the whole thing runs like CRAP on my system.  I would think a 3 gig P4 and a Geforce FX 5900 Ultra would be enough to handle this!  Every game I've tried runs at less than half speed, even at 320x240!  Sigh...

turn off vector luminosity on the vector games, that's noted as to be one of the major hogs on at least those games

    gavv

Good idea, but I already tried that. Even the Arcade Warlords runs at like 10 frames a second at 640x480...I can't imagine what the problem is here. I tried the game on my 2nd PC, which is a P3-450 and the games run faster on that box than on my P4. Well, there's always MAME.

  5. My most prized Atari item would have to be my mint-condition Breakout machine which I rescued from a garage about 10 years ago. Even though I can beat the game on one ball, I'm still damn glad to have it!:D

I also have a Sears version of the Stunt Cycle stand-alone game which is still sealed in the box...

  6. I just revised both auctions, I'll ship either item out of the USA.

OH, that great to hear that you seem forgot about that! Now everything went fine at your auction! :D

    Jason :)

Yep, that's exactly what happened - I don't usually do international, but for something like this, no problem.

  7. The fact that it's a burnt DVD and not a pressed one is non-trivial.  Many people will have problems playing it.  My PS2 has played every other DVD I've thrown at it.  In the last three days it saw 11 DVDs which it played without a single error.

The Tarot card thing is an example of the overall poor production values.  As are the spiral disolves.

I might concede that my main problem with the product isn't the production itself but how proudly the Atari programmers talk about all the crap they pulled.  They behaved like children.  It's a shame that they couldn't separate the behaviour that led to their success and the behaviour that led to their failure. However, I'm yet to find a single redeeming feature of the product.  It was a waste of money.

Damn, I don't think anyone's views on this product could be possibly be more opposite than yours and mine...I do appreciate your opinions, though, and can kind of see where you're coming from.

Personally I got the impression that these guys acted childish in those days because of all the stress they were under - they were coding in machine language, for God's sakes! I myself work as a supervisor in a pretty large tech support office and as much as I like order in the workplace, I have to say that where I work, the most talented people are also the most...oh, let's say "eccentric." I have a sort of envy for the fact that the Atari programmers could act the way they did and still write a game that sells a couple million copies.

And I don't think that the Atari programmer's behavior led to any particular failure of the company, that honor would go to the marketing department...

As far as the videos, I think that HSW did a great job and I'm thrilled that he released them on DVD.

  8. I bought it.  My review is here:

    http://www.lunacy8m.com/z/default.asp?id=3...ntent=174&mnu=3

Short version: Avoid.  Nothing like harsh reality to destroy romatic fantasy.

I beg to differ - I think that these are pretty awesome documentaries. I really enjoyed hearing what life at Atari was like, as well as seeing what all these programmers are like in person. If your main gripe was the tarot-card thing, well, that's pretty lame.

And another thing...when I read a "DVD Review", I could care less about the fact that you can't play the DVD in your videogame system. Try it in a DVD player sometime.

  9. If there is enough interest I'll see about rereleasing Stella at 20 on DVD.

It's been long enough that maybe those who even bought it on VHS might want to get a DVD version.

I never sold out of the tapes myself, but Randy Crihfield I think managed to find homes for the leftovers.

Email me at [email protected] if you would want this and I'll make a decision.

I could include a lot of extras on the interactive portion of the DVD, and maybe freshen things up with some updated interviews.

    Most definitely, count me in!

  10. I can't see why anyone would want to buy your copy (especially at that price) since the ROM is now available.  :)

Pretty hard to display a binary on a shelf. :D

Well, you could always print the binary file:

"Dude, what's that big stack of computer paper on your Atari shelf?"

"It's Motorodeo, you fool! Don't you know how RARE that game is?"

Yeah, you're right. Not quite the same, is it? :D

  11. I also remember a game with a spider and a spider net, which was quite similar to tempest (alas, I forgot its name)...        greetings, Andreas Magenheimer.

Was that game called Web Dimension or something like that? I remember playing this game on a C64 and the music was fantastic...I was never aware of this game being on the A8, however. I think Activision made it...anyone?

I found out that the Tempest clone for the C64 WAS called Web Dimension - I've attached a screenshot of it. I assume this was never ported to the A8, which is a shame...I remember it being quite a good game.

  13. Mindfield: That pic is awesome, almost brought a tear to my eye. If anyone has any more pics like that, POST 'EM!

I remember being with my parents when they bought me a 2600 in Hess' (PA) - this was WAY back, like in '79, when only the original 8 titles were available. Sigh, I remember it like it was yesterday...

  14. Racing Destruction Set - what a load of garbage

Bop N Wrestle was crappy also IMHO

Agreed. Racing Destruction Set wasn't even usable.

Wow, thinking about that game brings back some bad memories! I was so psyched to get RDS when it was released and I remember bringing it home, loading it, and putting it away after about 5 minutes. I don't think I ever booted it a second time! One of the worst A8 games ever, hard to believe it was an EA release.

I still have a grudge against EA for not releasing Adventure Contruction Set on the A8, but that's another story. ;)

  15. this was a really horrible stupid idea, this is the first time they switched ever i think. my brother (and i used it as well) had an account way back in '98 and it has been fine ever sence, why change it ?  :x

I agree...I've been on there since '99 myself and have never seen a change this radical. As someone else had said, why fix it if it ain't broke? It's not that I really dislike change, it's just that the new layout SUUUUUUCKS! :x
