  1. As this goes on I am becoming more annoyed, however, about the inaccurate pong sound. I don't think that was even an actual game shown, just an animation.

The more I think about it, that's my main gripe as well. :)

Hey, I realize that although we all love our old systems, they are, in fact, old. I don't expect anyone to make a TV commercial telling me how cool Pong was in its day. All I would ask is that these classic videogames and home systems get treated with RESPECT by advertisers.

The analogy that I initially thought of, relevant or not, was: What do you think would happen if a record company tried to sell some new CD in a commercial while playing a Beatles song and saying "The history of music is just that - history"?

  2. I think I have seen the NTSC Lable style too one time for a PAL Version. When I not wrong sold in Australia. But maybe the seller has make a mistake and it was a NTSC Version.

Good point, missed your post the first time 'round.

Actually, if you want to get technical about it, I make no claim whatsoever in my auction that it's an NTSC cart. I would expect people who bid on my auctions (or feel the need to "warn" other people about them) to know what the hell they are looking at.

And anyway...are BOTH versions of this cart not rare? I see nothing in the rarity guide on this site that implies that a PAL version is more common.

  3. It's still the PAL version and apparently untested.  :|

Auction listing was modified to reflect that it's a PAL cart. I did test the cart and both sides worked. However, my screen did not roll and the colors did not look "off", so the thought of this being a PAL cart (or the fact that a PAL version even existed!) did not occur to me. I certainly wasn't trying to dupe anyone here...

  4. That picture is not one that he took.  That is a picture that I took of a PAL cart and previously asked in the Atari 2600 forum if all the pal carts had that label.  I later used the photo to auction off the PAL cart on ebay.

He has previously sold it or has more, see this auction.

I specifically emailed him about the previous auction and asked if the cart that would be sent if I bid and one was the one in the picture.   I wanted to see what he would say because if he said it was the actual picture, I was going to point out that he was using my photo.   He never responded to the email, probably remembered where he got the photo and recognized the name from the email.

Whoa...I had no idea you guys were in here talking about my auctions. I picked up this cart for $15 at a yard sale, took a pic, and put it up on EBay, for God's sake. I never received an email about the former auction from ANYONE. Want to see more pics? Email me and you'll get 'em. I didn't steal anyone's pictures, thank you very much, and I very much resent the fact that you think I did. Want to see a picture of me standing on my head holding the cart in the auction? It can be arranged. Thanks also for lablelling me as a crook and a thief for just trying to sell a cart - I guess 61 positives and no negs on EBay mean nothing to you fine collectors.

By the way, this IS the second time I'm listing this cart. The previous high bidder (who happened to be from the same state as me - gee, I MUST be a crook) told me in no uncertain terms that he basically had no intentions of paying for this auction (this is like the 3rd time I got screwed trying to sell a 2600 cart, go figure). Instead of going through all the crap involved with an NPB, I made a second-chance offer. And, the picture in this auction is the same as the first auction, I just shrunk it.

    Sheesh...

  5. Is it just me or does the "pong" sound not seem right in that commercial?  I may just be remembering the original incorrectly (it was a long time ago that I played it) but it sounds too high pitched to me.  I couldn't care less about the Matrix game, I want the pong noise to be right.

You're correct, it's way off. If they're going to dismiss the entire history of videogames up until now, they could have at least shown an actual Pong game instead of a crappy facsimile. But I digress...

  6. i dont know what ur both talking about, the game is kickass. even if it sucked i would still play it due to the fact the story ties in with the movies. i see how u are pissed about the pong thing, but the game IS cool

Well, the fact that it ties in with the movies is why I wanted to play the game in the first place. We'll just have to agree to disagree here - while I feel that the two Matrix movies are fantastic, the game is a pile of wank.

Also sorry to hear that you're willing to play games even if they suck. Want to buy my E.T. cart? :D

  7. For me, it was definitely Missile Command. The arcade game was so cool and I just could not WAIT to play this game on my 2600. The day this cart was released, I vividly remember standing with my mom in a line of 100+ people in front of a J.C. Penny waiting for the doors to open. I also remember that the crowd was so large, they had the carts (stacks of them!) and a special register in the front of the store. And, I certainly wasn't disappointed in the cart, that's for sure.

Man, those were the days...what the hell game for a home system would invoke that sort of response today?

  8. And before you ask, yes I do work for EA, but I always have and will feel that good business sense is what pursuaded EA and all the other publishers to abandon the 8bit - simply they sold so few copies of the games on that SKU compared with other 8bit SKU's...

    sTeVE

I find that very hard to believe. There were a LOT of Atari 8-bit machines out there at that time. EA abandoned the Atari 8-bit fairly early in the game, at a time when plenty of other 'big' publishers were still producing product. I'll buy the fact that there was much more piracy on the Atari platform than any other at the time, however. I do remember reading that One on One was delayed for over a year on the 8-bit so a new copy protection scheme could be devised for the disk. Trip always loved the C64 to death (I used to read his occasional babblings in EG back then), even though it was an inferior machine that happened to have a nice sound chip in it.

Anyway, following your logic above, I'd love to hear why EA initially decided to not support the Atari ST 'back then.' The machines were flying off the shelves but Trip was adamant that EA would not support the machines and he always seemed to have an issue with Atari products. I personally received a great deal of personal satisfaction when the 3DO tanked. ;-)

  9. A short list of my faves:

    1. Pharoah's Curse (my vote for the best Atari 8-bit game ever)

    2. Encounter (nobody else mentioned this?!?)

    3. Star Raiders

    4. Lode Runner

    5. Mr. Robot and his Robot Factory

    5. Serpentine

    6. Crossfire

    7. Action Quest

    8. Spindizzy

    9. Jumpman

    10. Deadline

  10. The Galaxian port was AWFUL! I still remember how bad it was...the sounds and gameplay were just totally off from the arcade machine. I remember also that you could let the enemies swoop down and touch your ship and your 'missile' would kill them on contact without even firing - try it!

  11. Sorry if this has been covered already...

Ever since I was kid, I enjoyed playing the Space Shuttle games in Space War (ex. Game 14). For some dumb reason, I always thought it was incredible fun (and sometimes frustrating as hell) to try and match my ship's angle and velocity and dock with the "shuttle." I don't think I've ever met anyone else who shares my opinion of these games!

Anyway, I'm most curious as to how you guys feel about these games...am I alone here, like the guy in another topic who enjoys the Star Ship cart? :D

  12. I thought that the Asteroids cart for the 8-bit was laughable. Yeah, it looked decent but the gameplay was awful. I still remember paying $50 for that dog...

The worst 8-bit cart I ever owned was "Fortune Hunter", by Romox (I think that was the name, anyway). It was a Venture knock-off but only had 4 rooms! Beat the game in about 3 minutes and never touched it again.

Honorable mention should be made for some of those horrid EPYX carts also, like "Monster Maze."

  13. if it runs on a 520 STFM then it should run fine on a 1040 STFM, as the only difference is memory.

All ST's should be able to run the same software (except STe specific software which obvioulsy only runs on an STe).

at their core all the systems are the same..  what are you having problems running?

Not quite true...there were many games that only ran on the original TOS, version 1.0. Plutos comes to mind...
