The weekend started off with a stop at Gamestop looking for some cheap PS2 games. Since their online store thinks that I'm a reseller for wanting to purchase a bunch of their buy 2 get 2 free games to jumpstart my smallish collection, I thought maybe I could find some in-store.
Every store I stopped at, was the same old thing...nothing. Each store I checked told me they had just shipped out all of their PS2 games, but the XYZ location down the street still had them.
The last store I stopped at though finally turned the tides. He told me of a small "mom-and-pop" store just a few miles from his store.
So off I go...
When I walked into the store, I figured I was in the right place. It just smelled old. Not old in a bad way though. The guy at the counter greeted me as I came in, but then left me alone the entire time I was in the store.
I picked up the following PS2 games all complete with their boxes and instruction manuals:
Jak 3
Jak X Combat Racing
24 The Game
Prince of Persia, The Two Thrones
James Bond 007 Agent Under Fire
Test Drive
Prince of Persia, The Sands of Time
Prince of Persia 2, The Warrior Within
Tak 3: The Great Juju Challenge
Tak and The Power of Juju
Tak 2: The Staff of Dreams
Gran Turismo 3
Gran Turismo 4
The prices were not the best, but certainly not bad. All of them were less then $3.00 and most were no more then $1.99.
I didn't spot any Resident Evil or Silent Hill games which I have on my list. I did see a Shadow of The Collosus, but there wasn't a manual, so I passed on it this time.
There were stickers on the cases, but not the annoying yellow ones like you see at Gamestop which are horribly difficult to get off.
During checkout, they ran each disk through a buff/cleaning machine. It took a few minutes, but it was okay as I got to look around a bit more.
Other items that I saw:
Current gen games (Plenty, but didn't look through them)
A small bit of Atari 2600 and Collecovision games, All were carts only and the few I looked at seemed a bit overpriced to me. Example--Combat was $0.99 and a white label Space Shuttle was $19.99.
There were some NES, SNES and N64 games. I didn't look too closes at these.
There were DS in a case and in a box that were buy 2 get 1 free. From the sign, it said most were $3.99 and less.
Genesis carts were few, though most were boxed.
I saw only 3 or 4 Sega CD games.
The rest of the Sega section was all Saturn and Dreamcast stuff.
They had a small section for PS1, but from what I looked through, the selection seemed limited.
There were large selections of music CDs, DVDs and a few BluRay. But, I didn't look through these much.
Another small section I didn't look through much had gamecube stuff in it.
If you're into posters, they had a bunch of those as well. I'm not, so I didn't look through them.
While waiting on them to clean and buff the disks I was buying, I saw a Panasonic 3DO. I was excited until I saw the Ebayish price. No games and a price tag of $99. That shows you the kind of deal you'll get if you take that deal for $70 (console and 13 games) in the marketplace thread. I would have, but I don't do checks anymore and would rather not be out running around to get a money order and then mail it, etc.
There were other consoles that seemed to be priced in line with ebay as well. N64 ($40 with expansion pack...$30 without expansion pack), a Goldstar 3DO for $79. After seeing these prices, I didn't bother looking at the 2600 and 7800 consoles they had. Though I did look at the 2600 Sears Heavy Sixer that was missing a price. There was also a bluray 3D player with an HDMI cable for 80 bucks.
So overall, I had a blast and I have to say I'll probably be going back at some point for some more PS2 games. The prices were pretty good (I compared a few of what I got against prices on jjgames and estarland and each one I payed less) and I liked being able to open and examine the cases and manuals before deciding.
Summing up the weekend, I'd say pretty good.
Even though I bought the PS2 when it first came out, I didn't get a lot of games for it. I think it was somewhere around 14 or 15 total. So with the 13 games today and the Clock Tower 3 I'm getting from Ax here on the forums, I nearly doubled the size of my collection. Only 1700+ games to go!
