    HA HA!

I think the "U" is the most confusing thing. What does it mean? Wii University? That sounds ridiculous, as ridiculous as Burger King University. Only there really was a Burger King University, but there's no Wii University. Every time I see Wii U, I think of Burger King University, because while there was one, it sounds equally ridiculous.

I wonder what was wrong with "Wii 2" or "Wii 400" or whatever. But "U?" I wonder if they came up with this in their in-house marketing dept, or if someone on Madison Avenue dreamed that up. Whoever it is, they're obviously not very good at their job.

Is Wii U perhaps a play on words - "We / You" ?

fauxscot: If possible, is there any chance I can get hold of that bad CDP1861 display chip? I'm interested in getting a die shot of the chip, and I'd much rather have a non-working one acid-etched open than destroying one that works properly.

Fauxscot - if that bad display chip is the one from my console that you got working feel free to donate/use as you see fit for any projects you have in mind or for someone else to utilize.

  3. I hope I don't derail this thread with my post, I had created a separate one but since all of the RCA S2 experts are here, it was recommended that I post in this thread. :) If you'd like you can respond to me directly in a private message. Thank you in advance for your help!

I recently received an RCA Studio II from eBay, that was untested. It came with the original PSU and switch box. I bought this adapter from Radio Shack to connect to my flat screen:

    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062054&locale=en_US

I connected everything, switched the switch box to RCA Studio II and nothing happened. The red LED light on the console didn't light up at all. The console didn't make any noise, the TV didn't react in any way. I was wondering if it was the RCA PSU. I read that an Atari 2600 PSU works with the RCA Studio II. I tried that, and again nothing.

Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot the system? Also please keep in mind that I'm a newbie when it comes to retro-electronics. :) Thank you!

I hope you find a simple solution but you may have become another victim of receving a non-working S2 on ebay. I've bought 3 in the last 3 months, non of which worked. Thankfully, by the sounds of it, fauxscot has been able to repair one of mine.

I found this post from 3 years ago in the group:

Don't know if it is still possible to contact this person... but he sounds a useful contact for the missing Eur/Aus games!

I'm going to try e-mailing him.

I just got approved for the group so I posted a message there about the renewed interest in the S2 here and provided a link back this thread. Maybe someone from there will join us in here with some info.

  5. Well, I maintain my stance re: getting these things off Ebay - Caveat Emptor. I am now basically 0 for 3 on trying to get a working unit.I'm doing ok on getting carts with these things though. So far got Space War, (x2), TV School House I (complete with all 4 manuals), TV School HOuse II-Math Fun (x2), Fun with Numbers (x1), BlackJack (x4), Tennis/Squash (x3), Biorhytm (x2) and Baseball (x2). So if there is a need for a donation to some experimenting on some of the thoughts in this thread, I have some carts I could lend.

On an unrelated + note, my copy of Zero Five for the Jag showed up today. Just spent about 10 minutes with it and it seems pretty fun. Graphics totally reminded me of I, Robot; now THERE'S a game I'd love to see on the Jag.

  6. Thought I'd add in that I also am glad to have added it to my collection, no matter the cost. There's no other way it was ever going to get into my collection, I enjoy the game (reminding me a bit of Arena and Daggerfall a bit in the graphics dept), and I have certainly spent that much and more on far less worthy experiences. So is it worth it? If you collect for the Jag and enjoy RPGs, absolutely! :-)

  7. Being the owner of 2 of these, one with this problem (http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/207348-rca-studio-ii-display-question/page__hl__+rca%20+studio%20+ii%20+display#entry2673826) and another on it's way hoping that it wont have the same issue, it's awesome to hear from those directly involved with it. It gets so little attention, yet seeing an ad for it in the TV Guide when I was really young was my first exposure to the possibility of home video games. I wanted it so bad, but it never happened. Now, I'm just trying to end up with a fully working one. Thanks for joining and sharing!

  8. To get it on the iPad, do a search for "Retro Gamer" in the app store. There is a 'standalone' Magazone app for it that you download and it will appear in the 'Newstand' app. Open Retro Gamer from the newstand and from within that app will be options to buy issues, subscribe and also purchase their special 'e-books' such as the Atari 40th Anniversary book.
