I recall that I paid about AUS$400 for a 16KB RAM cartridge for my Atari 800 computer back in 1981 or so. In today's dollars that's about $1600. Now, I just purchased a pack of three 32GB USB sticks for around AUS$14.
Bits back then were over 7 billion times more expensive each, than now! Pretty much the origin of "every bit is sacred"!
