  1. It only JUST occurred to me. All my life I've been saying "Zed-80" and "6502", whereas probably most Americans say "Zee-80". Never thought about it before... how weird... "zee 80" WTF is that?

      And yet, Welsh has 3 more letters than English. Sooo ... who really knows fuck all?

  2. Basically I'd like a 2600 fan to hire me for a few years and let me write '2600 games. Limited editions. One copy... all I want is a reasonable income and throw away all the crap I deal with in day to day 9 to 5.

  4. Pastel colours. Can't stand them. What's up with these awful UI and hardware designs? First Ubuntu, now IOS7. Awful, putrid design. Can't wait till pastels are out of vogue.

      I'm not a big fan of some of the color choices in iOS7 either, but what really bothers me is how badly they screwed up the music app. I want to turn OFF the album cover thumbnails - they waste space.

  5. I just read someone's top-5 Atari 2600 homebrew games list, the top 4 of which are ARM games.

      @doctorclu - DPC+ games use an ARM processor on the cartridge (e.g., SPACE ROCKS by @SpiceWare, which is an awesome game, by the way).

      Those Mystique games had a lot of interesting body parts on display, if ARM and LEG are not enough. I think there should be more HIP games.

      I had to fix this once before, I'll do so again.  Currently the forum is using MySQL engine for searches, but I will be replacing this soon with Elasticsearch, which is much better in this regard and I should be able to set it to allow two-character search terms again.

  9. The very first video game I ever ever played was released in 1974. Here's a video (not mine) of it in action. Ah, the memories...

      When it first came out. I was so small the bigger kids had to hoist me up to play. I would get "points" with them by cursing like a truck driver and they thought it cute.

      I played it in the mid/late '70s. It was sitting in an airport in Tasmania.

      I recall playing it well before space invaders was a thing.

      Well, come on then... point 'em out and we can discuss. He's a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy and former Research Fellow in Philosophy. He's eminently qualified on this issue. It will be interesting to see what errors he's made. Have at it.

      Sorry, I'm not going to throw comments back and forth on the internet.  I just can't do that anymore.  If it were an actual conversation, I'd be happy to discuss.  That said, I do think it was a good article and good perspective.

  10. The irony of wondering how to do something with the TIA, and searching online for it, only to find the first link explaining how it works was written by me... 20 years ago. Thank you, me.

      Have you ever tried pitching media companies? I've often thought a company like Netflix, for example, could have benefitted from the promotional value of a Stranger Things game on the 2600 (both digital and physical). Ditto for something like Ghostbusters, there should be a 2600 game in limited edition boxes and placed on a Flashback to essentially advertise next year's entry. Also, consumer foodstuff concerns could promote products like in the old days with games adapting their trademarks. Just a thought...

      :) no, but I think the days of making money programming '2600 games are long, long gone. I was just being whimsical.

    I thought it went OK, although I would have chosen a different cover photo.  To be honest, I make an excellent subject for interviewing. Engaging. Funny. Knowledgeable. Modest. Free. And I'm considerate towards cats. What more could one want in a guest?

  18. If you anticipate wanting to contact me, please note my email address andrew@taswegian.com

    Although a knee-jerk reaction, I have considered how I would respond once this sale/acquisition was confirmed. I'm not interested in any way supporting Atari. They did wrong by me and it still smarts.

    So I expect I may disappear from this site.  I'll mull over it for a few days. But basically, fuck it.

      As I like to point out, is the "Atari" that hurt you THIS current Atari, or one of the various Ataris in the past?

      I learned somewhere along the way, probably around 2008, that the childhood memories I had with Atari stuff, and the corporation calling itself "Atari" was not the same.

      So I get in a minor way the "did wrong by me" comment.  I remember when the Atari back then came down on some people wanting to develop games and getting the good ole C&D.   Was a valuable reminder that these memories were not just fun in our heads, but active properties still of some people still hoping to make a buck.

      Selling this place to Atari is about akin to crossing the streams.  It is good to separate what you care about from business.  And very rarely do hobby and corporate money mix well.

  19. I recall that I paid about AUS$400 for a 16KB RAM cartridge for my Atari 800 computer back in 1981 or so. In today's dollars that's about $1600. Now, I just purchased a pack of three 32GB USB sticks for around AUS$14.
    Bits back then were over 7 billion times more expensive each, than now! Pretty much the origin of "every bit is sacred"!

    1. Keatah

      Keatah

      Yeh sometime in 1981 I paid like $199 or $299 for a 16K Microsoft Ramcard. For Apple II.

  20. Pulled the trigger on a MacBook Air M2, 512GB SSD.

    My beloved 2013 Macbook Pro was getting slightly long in the tooth and couldn't keep up with the frame rate required to emulate my new '2600 work at sufficient speeds.

    Gotta wait 3 weeks or so for delivery!

  21. Look at those declarations! This is what OCD does to your programming...

    void processSpeech() {

        static const unsigned short *const sp = (const unsigned short *)__SPEECH_ADDRESS;
        const unsigned char *const s = (const unsigned char *)(int) sp[speakWord];

        if ((RAM[_BUF_SPEECH] = s[spk]) != 0xFF)
            spk++;
    }

  22. I've collated links to some of my Atari work into a FB group...

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/drboo/

  23. I have just discovered "PoC||GTFO" hacker journal. Amazing.
    There's one issue that deals with disassembly of Star Raiders for Atari, worth a read.
