Atari vs. Telegames Back in the Day: Which was Cooler?
eightbit replied to knievel1's topic in Atari 2600
People who knew (and read the sticker on the bottom of the console) knew that the Sears Tele-Games consoles were manufactured by Atari. But unquestionably without a doubt (in my humble opinion) that Tele-Games Heavy Sixer trumped the Atari version. The wood finish was just so much better! Here's mine: Freakin' LOVE this thing. It is the star of my entire collection. -
Yeah, VA1 only. And there's no easy way to tell other than to open the console. Someone said open the cart flaps and you can tell. That is BS. The shielding covers any visible sign of any trace. You just have to get one and be lucky. I gave up and just scored a model 2....where everything works and no mods are needed at all. And, it is not all that much larger. The situation I had was space. I wanted a Genesis and an SMS to fit in a small spot. The Genesis 3 would have been perfect but it turns out the model 2 fits in the same spot I was planning on placing it. Still, one day (whenever I actually find a VA1) I am going to try this. I am not going to actively hunt down a VA1 unit, but if I find one in the wild I will certainly revisit this. And by the way, they are all MK-1461. You have to open it to find out if it is a VA1 or VA2 unit. There are tell tale signs, but most evidently it will say VA1 or VA2 in the upper right hand corner of the PCB

Does not look like this is being updated anymore. But here's my Sears Tele-Games Heavy Sixer SN. Funny as the first two digits were my house number as a kid, and the next three digits are my current house number! I am assuming the "S" is for Satan.

I started thinking today about when I used to own a Neo Geo AES console as a kid. I was not a rich kid, but I did have a really nice grandmother I ended up with the console and only two games as a kid before I pretty much gave up on collecting it. Years later I did collect it again, this time about 20 games. But, I gave up again...just too expensive. But now there are solutions such as the NeoSD and that looks cool. I have decided that I need a Neo-Geo again! I have a vast Jaguar game cart collection...around 60 carts. Half are loose, half are complete. Not that I am going to be trading 60 games for a Neo Geo, but I was considering first selling some games starting with the more expensive titles (Protector (non-SE version), Breakout 2000, Defender 2000, Worms, and many more) in order to gain funds for a Neo Geo AES console (with PSU, controller, av cables, maybe a memory card) and then sell some more for that NeoSD unit. I think at this point I can probably sell around 10 games and have more than enough to do this, but before I go that route I figured I would throw a shout out here first. Maybe somebody has a nice working complete (box is not necessary, but would be nice!) Neo Geo AES console that they would like to trade in order to boost their Jaguar cart collection. I am planning only on keeping the games that I regularly play (some homebrews, Ruiner, Tempest, Wolfenstein). But I think the rest may just go. I do not currently have a list, but will soon. If you have a nice Neo Geo setup that you would want to part with let me know! EDIT: Started selling games and obtained a Neo Geo. No need for the console anymore, thanks!

FS: Microsoft Lifecam HD-5000 Brand New **SOLD**
eightbit replied to eightbit's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
This is still available. The interested party has not gotten back to me since Tuesday. Thanks! -
Received mine back from MacRorie today (thank you again!) with the firmware updated to v16. I tested it first with this firmware in the Tele-Games Heavy Sixer and as I expected it did not work...same thing as before. I was just curious to see if maybe my heavy sixer reacted differently. Took it to my 7800 where it did work and updated to v17. Brought it back to the heavy sixer and it works perfectly! Thank you again everybody for helping out with this. Played a bit of Jr. Pac Man in celebration

That is GREAT! Thank you for the reply. I am really eager to get this. Thank you for all of your hard work man!

I said this earlier in the thread regarding Shawn's stuff, but I just want to reiterate. I purchased his A/V modded 5200 (removed from the listing obviously because I purchased it!) and WOW...it is amazing. The condition is superb and the modifications done are truly top notch. Had I not spent as much as I did this month I would have absolutely snagged that 2600 modded console listed as well. Somebody needs to grab that now! I assure you that you will not be disappointed!

I am looking for a SNES or a SNES Jr....console only in unyellowed condition. I have never seen the Jr.'s get yellowed, so I guess that statement will only really apply to the original console. I don't need a power supply or a/v cables, but might take a controller if you have one with it in good working condition. The console has to work obviously, and cannot be yellowed or chipped/broken in any way. I have various trade items. If you have one and are looking for something, PM me with pictures of the console and a want list. If I don't have what you are looking for..who knows..I might have something else that you never knew you wanted until you spoke to me Or, cash is always an option. PM!

FS: Lot of 17 Intellivision games and overlays - ***SOLD***
eightbit replied to eightbit's topic in Buy, Sell, and Trade
Bump. Take it all for $25 shipped. I actually have some doubles (doubles carts, overlays) and two games I think that are also boxed that I will throw into the mix. Take it all. $25 shipped. -
Yup, I found it as well previously. I was planning on updating here. The patch is easy, but unfortunately I had a VA2 motherboard...ARGH!

I used to think that myself. The best thing to do in order to sharpen up your skills is to practice daily with a "junk" board. Practice soldering and de-soldering in it using some good solder and a pump of solder braid. I personally prefer braid but I use both equally. Just keep in mind that solder flows to the heat. If you heat the pin and bring solder to it...it is going to flow to exactly where you want it. It is certainly a skill but most definitely not a difficult one. It's almost like riding a bike. Many moons ago I would be frightened to solder but I think a combination of being determined to learn and not having the cash to send everything off to be repaired helped me overcome that A bit of solder braid over that solder and a hot iron and you would have it as clean as a whistle in a matter of seconds and then you can properly solder all of the pins without creating a short. If you have a magnifying lamp it will be easy to see this up close while you solder to make sure you do not bridge anything. If you don;t have one, get one. I use mine all of the time....sometimes just to SEE (I'm old!)

Atari Flashback 2 controllers fit too tightly in an original system
eightbit replied to wizard9168's topic in Atari 2600
Atari used the rounded corners (and so did many others...Vic-20, Commodore 64) which is dubbed the "teardrop" design. I have no idea how these alternate connectors came into play. Older extension cables and controller connectors all used the teardrop, and then this thing happened. Connectors with the teardrop design typically push in smoothly. Yeah, I have invested too much time over the years analyzing wires and connectors -

It might be because the flashback connector is this: While true Atari connectors look like this (this a random picture of an adapter cable, but notice that plug with the rounded edges): I don't think a lot of people realize this. The first picture with the non rounded edges will work and will fit...tightly. They are not exactly the same however. And, if you have a joystick connector on an Atari with brittle or weak plastic, using the sharp edged type of DB9 connector as in the first picture can actually crack the joystick connector plastic hood inside of the console as it is basically "expanding" it. That is not very common, but I have seen it happen. I try to use rounded proper type extension cables and then I can simply plug these controllers into those instead. I'd rather put stress on the extension cable which is much more easily replaceable -
Exactly what I was looking for. Simple named roms that I can organize/add to my UNO cart. Thanks!

I am completely onboard to purchase a Gamedrive regardless as soon as it is released in the AA Store, but I did have a question regarding the flash being used (or a few questions). What type of flash is being used and what is the estimated life expectancy? I know this can range regarding the type of flash being used (ie: 100,000 vs 1,000,000 write cycles). I do not know and really have not investigated the internals of the Gamedrive...nor do I know if that is even available anywhere online anyway. But, I am assuming some sort of erasable/re-programmable flash is being used hence the reason games take 10-15 seconds from what I have seen in order to load. Or maybe I am wrong and it is using RAM? I would however expect a RAM based solution to have instant load though... like the latest iteration of the Everdrives. Any knowledge to the subject is appreciated! I work for a flash/ram company and I always like to know the life expectancy of electronic products I am looking to purchase

Anyone else sell all their Jag stuff and...
eightbit replied to Crazy Climber's topic in Atari Jaguar
Makes sense. I had to look up what a KB Liquidators even looked like. We had KB Toys...never knew they had liquidator stores. I wasn't actively looking for clearance systems at the time so mail order and ebay were things I just didn't use for that purpose. in 97 I was all about the PS1 and Nintendo 64 and PC gaming. If I found a good clearance deal by walking into a store I would sometimes jump on it. -
Finally received a Super Game Module thanks to slab! Arrived in superb new condition and I can now check that off of my want list. Thanks again!

I can't count how many trades and sales I have conducted with this fine gentleman....too many to remember! But, it is always a pleasure! Really cool guy to BS with too. Hopefully one day we will have that beer!

What made you want to start collecting 5200?
eightbit replied to The Strangest's topic in Atari 5200
For me it was initially the fact that I never owned one as a kid. I recall seeing commercials, but it was a flash in the pan and then gone. I was always curious about this elusive (to me) system. Years passed and I never forgot about it and eventually I owned an Atari XE system and someone told me that it was based off of the 5200 (or as I later found out that it was based off of the 8-bit line of computers and the 5200 was based off of that) so I was even more intrigued. When I finally did get one my initial experience was crap of course because of the dead controllers. But I was determined and as soon as I was able to get some good controller alternatives to actually PLAY the games I found it (and still find it) to be a fantastic console. I love this console, I really do. Put the work in and get a better controller and It is worth it. This console is one of my cherished things next to the Vectrex and Jaguar. -
I believe it. The 5200 you sold me that is composite modded is like the 5200 Gods came down from the skies and have given be sight beyond sight! If that is any indication of how things are I think a composite modded 7800 will blow me away
-
Correct. The color version came as the boxed retail game. And, I never had that version and nobody else I knew who had a 7800 had it. Why? Because the system already came with the game. I have to wonder why it was ever released as a stand alone game release. For people maybe that lost their pack-in game? Or were they thing about collectors that wanted a CIB version (doubt it)? I never encountered a 7800 system that did not come with PPII as the pack in game so it really made no sense to me. But, then again, a lot of things Atari did at the time made no sense anyway so it fit with their business model.
