No worries, was worth a test. The test bin is really nice, I hope @Atarius Maximus picks it up again one day.

Thanks for the updates and interest in the game, guys. I appreciate it. I may get back to it. This game just became overwhelming for me in size and scope, and I started to hit a wall with hardware resources. Making changes and additions was starting to require removing existing game features. The Atarivox load/save routines are documented and should work if properly implemented, I’m sure I just made a mistake somewhere.

  2. I had to process this for a little while. Curt was a truly selfless person who gave so much to this community, and he was so kind to me when we corresponded over the years. It’s an immeasurable loss to the Atari community, and of course to his family and friends. My deepest sympathy to his family and everyone who loved him. You will be greatly missed, Curt. Rest In Peace.

We'll be checking out Cave Run on tomorrow's (Fri Aug 21) ZeroPage Homebrew stream LIVE on Twitch at 12PM PT | 3PM ET | 7PM GMT! Hope everyone can watch!

Thanks for featuring Cave Run.  I watched most of the broadcast tonight until I was pulled away.  I noticed you got stuck on the screen with the pit.  To get past that you need to jump and time it so you grab the treasure as you're jumping, if you fall into the pit there is no other option than death.  I suppose I shouldn't have designed that screen in such a way that it gives you hope! You have no choice but to fall in and lose a life.

You were correct when you mentioned that it uses the same game engine as Gingerbread Man.  Fred Quimby released that code and I re-used it for this game.  I never did get back around to fixing the scanline issue to make it compatible with real hardware.  I'm not sure I will at this point, but you never know. :)

  4. I am looking for a flash cart / SD Cart for my intellivision, my 2nd favorite childhood console.  I did sent a message to intvnut, but I don't believe there are any new ones currently available.  If anyone has one they'd like to part with for a reasonable price PM me.  Thank you!

Unfortunately due to regional issues, I haven't been able to test 7800basic with pineapples. It has been well tested with poutine, butter tarts, and bagged milk. Any other food-stuffs are a bit of a gamble, I'm afraid.

I really don't have anything meaningful to add to this post, other than I don't know what poutine and butter tarts are, and I've never seen milk in a bag. ;)

Keep it up atari2600land, 160A is probably the best graphics mode to start with.

haha just found this after pulling up the binary and going "hey wait a minute" :-D

(and then I was like, hey wait a minute - how did he get the the music out of the assembly code? totally forgetting that https://alienbill.com/2600/basic/music/ did the work for you! (But as I'm posting elsewhere I'm working on tools to make it very easy for middling-poor musicians to make new Atari music - https://alienbill.com/2600/atari-sound-forger/ )

But we're a pretty sharing culture here... and I do think that bassline slaps.

As a minor thing would you consider posting the "final" binary in the first messge?

Haha!  Sorry for "stealing" your music. :)  I updated the last binary I made in the first post as you suggested... good idea.  I remember reading your 2600 info on alienbill.com quite a bit way back when, it was extremely helpful.  Thanks Kirk!

It was very challenging and lots of fun. I just *love* Jumpman's mechanic so I "jumped" at the chance to put it on the show. 🙂 Thanks for making it!!

Thanks James!  I haven't watched the episode yet, and haven't played the game in a very long time.  I remember it being pretty difficult!

I was unaware of this port until I saw it on the show. It looks really cool, but there were some things identified on the show that could make it better. The game speed could be slowed slightly, jumps could be a little higher and slower "floatier", and the jump sound could be better.  @Atarius Maximus - I don't suppose you are wanting to work on this again after a 14-year break?  :-D

Ha. I saw that it was going to be on the show and almost cringed a little. It was a very long time ago and I was still learning, so there are definite flaws. I’m not likely to revisit that game after 14 years, no. ;)

  9. Lots of new homebrews arrived today! Thanks Al!

Many thanks to all of the homebrew developers, and I look forward to spending a lot of time playing this weekend!  In addition to the new games I haven't opened yet, I pulled out a whole lot I haven't played in a long time.  Also a big thanks to Edladdin for the new Super 78 Controller.  This is going to be fun!

  10. Yes, there have been a whole lot of posts about "what are you playing now?" over the years, but thought I'd share just for fun.  I've been playing all weekend with just the games stacked on top of my monitor.  There's a Harmony and a Cuttle Cart 2 up there too, but there's nothing like using actual carts!

  11. I was having a little fun with some simple Frostbite hacks and thought I'd share them.

    There are three hacks:

    Frostbite Trainer

    Frostbite Fast

    Frostbite Sadistic

The Polar bear appears on the first level in all three hacks.

The sky was changed to black in all three hacks.

The speed of the game was increased in all three hacks, the "sadistic" hack is very fast.

Infinite lives in the Trainer, 8 lives in the "fast" hack, 3 lives in the "sadistic" hack.

Starting temperature increased to 55 degrees in the "trainer" and "fast" hacks, remains at 45 degrees for the "sadistic" hack.

That's it.  Thanks to Dennis Debro's disassembly of the game this was pretty easy. :)

Can't edit my above post, here's the archived stream... We were able to score 2326 out of 3500 for the patch. We'll be attempting it again on a later show. 🙂

I got one of the original patches for this game back in 2003, I think my score was 3583.  Great game!

    There's another prime example,  Kierens A to Z Atari 7800 Guide :

    Quarterback Challenge (Touchdown Football)

Kieren gives it 6/10, saying it's a shame the programmer didn't decide to improve the game further..

No, it's a shame you didn't get off your backside as a writer of paid-for work and look into the game :@

Atarius Maximus explained back in June 2014 that this was just a simplistic game he wrote whilst learning 7800 Basic and his new job left him very little spare time, let alone time to improve on pet projects.

A simple Goggle search threw that thread up.

You either just dusted off old RVG etc reviews sat on your PC since before this thread or you didn't put the work in on the review.

Like Vince, i was content to lurk and read the comments from the new voices joining the thread here, but what's publically and privately come to light has drawn me back out.

You've plenty to say about the posts and work of others Kieren, so it's only fair yours is looked into.

Anyone thinking our gripes over his books lie with basic grammar, punctuation and spelling mistakes, is very much mistaken.

It's simply galling to see Retro Girl 5 star these guides and praise the bloody research,  when next to none has been done.

You talk creative freedom in your writing and how you were shackled by RetroGamer Magazine, hence you made the decision to quit, well this is 100% your work Kieren, you honestly think it meets the criteria and standards the likes of Chris Wilkins require?.

Ha.  I had to laugh a little bit.  I take pride in the games I have put on the forums, but at the same time I don't much care about "bad" reviews and this game was indeed just a learning experience.  Dungeon Stalker was the 7800 game I spent a ridiculous amount of time on.  Well, Legend of Silverpeak as well but I never finished it.  I have fun and if someone enjoys it, all the better.  I've never been to that site and not planning on taking a look now.

  14. I haven't been on the forums lately but noticed this just looking around.  Yeah, I made a few changes to bB to squeeze my changes into 2k, that was mostly the point of making this game and was the challenge that made it fun. :) The game itself was written completely in bB but the changes I made to bB to make it work were in assembly.  I also made a 4k version (Gate Racer 2) that added more options.  I haven't made a new bB game for years.  I need to come up with a new idea!

  15. I've got the typical excuses for this game and the more recent Legend of Silverpeak not being done, life gets in the way, no time, new job, etc... but I am going to try and get some of my favorite hobby stuff finished this year. :)

On the plus side, my friend and exceptionally awesome artist David Exton finished up some artwork for Death Merchant for a future cartridge release. I'm attaching the lower resolution thumbnail version for all to see. I'm hoping that can happen in the first half of 2019.

The last time I played the game I noted a bunch of issues (I directly copied my notes below) and most were related to buying items from the Death Merchant himself, which is going to probably have to be scaled back or removed as I remember the code just about making my head spin with the math involved - and it's now been almost 2 years since I actually wrote the code and it'll be a little harder to remember what I was trying to do. ;)

Either way, I'm going to be revisiting this game and hopefully have a final release in the coming months.

    Bugs in the v1.0 release....

    • When the death merchant gives you free items, and your backpack is still at 50 slots (before you've bought the expansion), he will still give you over 50 items.
    • If your backpack is still at 50 items max, the max value to buy that's listed on the buy screen should also say 50? A bit more minor...
    • One time, I went to the bank for a withdrawal, and the number started automatically counting down from 999,999. I Left and came back and it was back to normal.
    • Another "Death Merchant" purchase issue again. I Just bought the backpack expansion, then started buying canteens. The left number would count down by threes, and I could seemingly buy as many as I wanted without regard to the size of my backpack. I had $130,000 to spend. I ended up owning hundreds of items.
    • ---again - another death merchant screen, and I could buy as many knives as I wanted, backpack space didn't matter, it just stuck at zero but I could keep buying knives and my total cash would keep dropping. Not sure if knives are even set up to use backpack space, or should be?
    • There were 12 days remaining and I had earned $780,000. I think it's still too easy to make that much money - maybe I'm being too generous with the handouts from the merchant. Your score will roll over 999,999.
    • ---also with 12 days remaining I had yet to have a single enemy encounter. First random enemy encounter with 7 days remaining. Maybe not a big deal, I don't want them happening constantly.
