  1. This game is getting frustrating...has anyone else had both their trident and Neptina disappear off the shipwreck screen for no apparent reason? It's happened to me several times now.

Beware of "Jaws" on the octopus screen, as he will 'eat' Neptina right off of the bow on a pass by....then its game over since I haven't found a way to get her back :?

Also, the Pelican can steal your compass making you have to go back and get it===frustrating! I haven't lost the Trident yet..so far.

  2. Nice lesser known game from Imagic, somewhat similar to Wing War. Once you get the general idea down as to the game-play, the only thing otherwise "unfathomable" is the steep grade of difficulty beginning in level 3. Oh..and..will somebody get me a spear-gun for that pesky octopus!!? ,..the trident doesn't seem to do a whole lot ;-)

  3. Zylon,

You're right about the Elf being a tricky character. I had a great game going, made it to level 20 and racked up 95K!....but then when I got ambushed by a hundred monsters..it crashed leaving me no picture to post :? This could be a bug. The Elf is my favorite fighter, with quick agility and one shot kills, but he is a risky bet. The Warrior seems more clumsy and usually takes two shots to kill. I haven't tried the Wizard yet.

Exploring the ins and outs of this 64k cart is extremely fun, warts 'n all. It's not perfect, but seems to be about 95% or more. I vote for keeping this exhibition open for a little while longer, or just pinning a "test thread" for Gauntlet. When Tempest finally reaches the store, alot more of us will have it, and that should warrant a test thread as well. That title should drum up quite a bit of interest since Atarians have been waiting for oh....about 28 years for its arrival!

  4. Happy New Year everyone ;-) !

I've finally got a chance to have a little fun with Gauntlet. I'm the proud owner of cartridge #44 (of 50), and must say this is one Grand effort by ziggystar  .

Now that I've figured out how to beat 'death' and get past level 4, it's really starting to get interesting. I don't remember (NES ver.) level 5 being a time-limited treasure room with special music, but alas it is a nice surprise here. Since I haven't yet ripped my way to level 30+, there is definitely a lot of game-play left for me. How many levels are there...?

So far, I have managed to hack my way to level 7 with the Valkyrie. While in the heat of battle, she seems to have a distress cry which is discernibly female in tone! Another nice touch...:

  5. This game is a nice change of pace for the HSC. There is a bit of a learning curve, as I've discovered with repeated plays (getting killed fast!). The biggest trick seems to be mastering the control of your ship, for the sake of aiming shots when attacked or taking out a satellite, whilst not hitting the ubiquitous asteroids! Scoring aside from bonuses is also very meager, further adding to the challenge. Any score approaching 15K will indeed be hard-earned ;)

My tally after about 30+ attempts:

  6. No A-t-J, it's worse than Crack; there is no methadone to curb the need. Once hooked, you'll be looking for money in places you've never dreamed of just to secure that next ltd ed homebrew. It's only one more cart..its such a good deal..just one more..then I'll stop for awhile.....BUT ITS OK! We're here for you to lean on

  7. Honestly, the history behind this game seems more fascinating to me than actually playing it.

Indeed! It's the history and the surprise of discovering things unknown, thought to be lost, or rumored to exist, that make collecting Atari and this hobby in general, so doggone fun!!

PS: Just wait until someone locates the original Dale Evans story cassette and Red Sea coloring book.. :ponder:... :-D

@ Atari4You: Excellent original package design   That cart will feel a little naked without all that cool stuff to go along with it. I would definitely spring for the package deal ;)

  8. Here is something GCE made that's more rare than the Vectrex:

This Space-N-Counter handheld was handed out (to me :)) at a Pratt & Whitney Christmas party back in 1985! Aside from the calculator/calender, it has three games built in including Scramble(clone) and two other space shooters. It is well loved, and came in a generic box with instruction card and a leatherette slip cover. These seem to be super rare and only ever pop up for sale outside the US. One showed up on Ebay from New Zealand a couple of months ago in a nice box, which I hadn't seen before. There is also Chase-N-Counter with 3 adventure themed games, that I'd like to add to my collection ..some day.
