HSC9 Round 3: Desmond's Dungeon
atariron82 replied to therealbountybob's topic in 8-bit High Score Club
I made it to dungeon 11, but alas..I can't get to the last two bags of gold!! How much of this game remains unlocked because of the missing ladder in lv11? Does Ed Belka know about this fatal flaw in his game? Is he still active, or does someone else at Creative Sparks have the source code? It seems like this should have been caught and/or fixed by the able programmers long ago... 65,200 -

Not heard of "Pressure Cooker" is there an A8 ver or a clone ? I think it's exclusive to 2600, but it's so well programmed it almost looks A8!
-
This is one of my alltime favourite Activision titles(next to Pressure Cooker!). Judging by the millionaire scoring, it looks like I'm not alone!! I've made it as high as level 12, at my best. Now, to remember what the trick was to not lose all my men on level 9.... ...too many extra men you say?? Where they at? I need about a dozen to make it into the top 20.. : 45,510; level 9

Start saving for that APE cable didn't realise you were a keyboard player do you have a disk drive or have you got lots of carts ? It's a tricky game for keyboard - remember everyone you can use autofire but would be capped at 25K max score Yeah, it's just keyboard play for me using 800Win, since my usb-joystick died. I have a few dozen carts(slowly growing!) for my 800xl and XEGS. My 1050 drive powers up, but I really haven't been able to test it, since I don't have any Atari software yet, or blank floppys to format . WoW, I can't really identify with the stratospheric scoring in this game I'm working to just get past level 3 for the moment... 18,940

I finally broke 10k to make the scoreboard It plays like a cross between Wing War and Defender, neither of which are any good with just a keyboard. The 'gravity bit' is hard to master with arrow keys, and progress is slow. I'd like to get the cartridge of this, slap it in the XEGS, and have a go with my TAC-2. Until then, I think reaching 30k might be a realistic goal... 11,240

atariron82 replied to therealbountybob's topic in 8-bit High Score Club
I'll take many of the ones mentioned above and raise it by a few more: 1. Abracadabra 2. Bristles (great music and fun challenge!) 3. Jet Boot Jack 4. Necromancer 5. Pastfinder (like to figure out, since no idea what's going on in this one.. ) 6. Quasimodo 7. Shamus 8. Shamus: Case II 9. Tapper (drinks all around, courtesy of Atari ) 10. Trolls & Tribulations (amazing what can be done with just 3 colors... ) -
HSC8 Round 21 ** Season Finale **
atariron82 replied to therealbountybob's topic in 8-bit High Score Club
I finally graduated to the blue level in Shamus! My stay wasn't long though..after claiming the purple key at room 50, I was ambushed and wiped out in the next couple of rooms Everything is faster! I can only imagine how difficult the last level(red) is...just getting that far must be worth some serious bragging rights . 28,405 -
HSC8 Round 21 ** Season Finale **
atariron82 replied to therealbountybob's topic in 8-bit High Score Club
I got to this screen with 1 man but then seemed to be blown(?) off the bottom platform to the right - now we have another day will try and finishg this game. It's a lot better than I remember. Did you struggle on 14 with the timing too? Room 14 was tough. I got the timing of the laser beam down by counting the intervals in between, approx 5-7 secs. I would wait until the 'cycle' was almost over, hop the cog..just clearing the beam by a shave. The counting isn't always exact though. There is a slight variation in interval length which has snagged me several times as I was falling to the 'safe' platform. As for room 19, it looks like Scalak is stuck there as well. It will be interesting to see if he can suss out a solution... -
HSC8 Round 21 ** Season Finale **

I managed to reach room#19 in Ollies Follies! It appears to be unsolvable unless there is some way to activate those "transporter" style devices. If not then, Ollie remains stuck at the bottom of the screen after getting the key and falling down the shoot. This game has many elements of Bounty Bob Strikes Back. I'ts no doubt that the programmer drew some of his inspiration from Big Five's masterpiece 11,230 -

HSC8 Round 21 ** Season Finale **

Pick 1!!! I suggest Shamus as BD takes a long time to play - we could play it next season perhaps Shamus it is! Boulder Dash is quite challenging and deserves some serious attention(next season for sure ) I'm sort of stuck at room 17 though(a "pod" room?), trying to suss out how to get the orange key. You can't advance to the Blue level until the the orange keyhole is unlocked. Until then, its just kill enemies and rack up points... Game on! That "who will challenge" quote is from the long forgotten Joust 2 arcade game, back when Video Games 'talked' to players to get them to drop another quarter in the slot. Those were the days.. -
HSC8 Round 21 ** Season Finale **

In honor of the new 2600 release, I thought to nominate Boulder Dash for the finale. It hasn't been played since way back..but maybe Fandal will chime in with a score I also dusted off another criminally ignored title from the early days of the Goochman Regime, Shamus, and am currently exploring level 1 without a map. "Who will challenge me?..." . Boulder Dash- 2,790 (cave E) Shamus- 26,145 Captain Beeble- 4,300 -
Getting the BIG payoff is the real trick in Qix..and Tough! I cashed in a 6X: 183,176

Happy New Year to everyone! This game was my achilles heal. I've never been able to break 80k in this one. If only RR had selected Dig Dug...
