Season 2 5200 HSC Round 8 *Montezuma's Revenge*
atariron82 replied to darthkur's topic in 5200 High Score Club
What an incredible score! I bet Panama Joe spends a lot of time in the dark at that level. It reset on me once erasing a pretty decent score. It seems I pressed the fire/jump button as my last man was dying and it remembered with a lag, continuing the game with zero points but my inventory of items intact. The screen should freeze a few seconds after your last Panama Joe bites the dust, leaving your high score indefinitely until you press the jump button. This is using original hardware. I assume it holds true for the emulation ROM as well -

Well I've pretty much hit a brick wall. Damn this games difficulty There's a lot more to be mastered with this one. Hats off to anyone who can get through For Your Eyes Only; that level is simply Insane...like instant death. Camoflaged "invisible" frogmen ambush snipe you from the start. I remain however undeterred Until next time... -

Good Show NoahsMyBro...and happy anniversary! I'm back in the game and I'm gunnin' for ya. And the rest of you guys---don't get comfortable Like I said earlier, if there ever was a game designed for the stock controller it's this one. The stick glides like butter, giving you complete control of your craft once you get the hang of it, and without wearing out your wrist; there aint nuthin' like the real thing. The replay value of this game is pretty high, since each mission you complete leads to new challenges and different scenery, but like Cafeman said, the first mission is pretty hard. The steep learning curve is probably responsible for turning off alot of people to this game. I'm starting to appreciate revisiting this once neglected gem in my 5200 library 18750 -
It would have been a great idea, but unfortunately no. The 5200 was originally launched with Super-Breakout as the pack-in game, which turned out to be a Dud for initial sales. Things picked up after Pac-man replaced SB as the pack-in cart. Atari might have even trounced the competition, had they launched the Super System with Super-Breakout built in and the Pac-man cart as a bonus game. One can only imagine... Interesting thing about the XEGS; it was a 'rare bird' here in the states from the get-go. I remember seeing one tucked away on the top shelf next to a couple of 7800s, in the back of an electronics boutique in the mall ca 1987. All the NES junk was in the front of the store. It seems Atari was unable to cut through the successful marketing juggernaut that was Nintendo.

6450 This game takes some getting used to...besides the fact that it's mega-flippin' TOUGH! The good ol' analog stock controller seems to work best for maneuvering the Lotus; I find if you pull back to slow down as the screen scrolls right, your car builds up thrust enabling larger leaps forward. I was able to "fly" over two huge craters back-to-back in one jump! Also, at the end of the first level you can land on the oil derrick whether visible by starlite or not as long as you know where the 'sweet spot' on the screen is, but theres not much room for error. It took me several tries with a little luck . On to save the world... -
This statement of mine in context, was in reference to the ATARI 2600 version of Tutankham as NOT being an 8-bit game, by mere graphical comparison(Do you think it is?). The only "obvious" thing now is that my over-generalizing about "bitness" got me into some technical deepwater...

I guess I don't understand this comment. How is it an exclusive, since it was released on the Atari 2600 and Intellivision as well? Maybe I don't understand the point you're trying to make.... Great question! Allow me to clarify: My only point was that it was an "8-bit exclusive", since the A-800XL version was never released. The 2600 was obviously not an 8-bit translation. You are correct to remind me about the Intellivision release, but it was limited to Europe and was never officially released in the US; also, I never imagined that the INT version used all "8 Bits" (please see comparisons below). However, since I've just discovered that the Commodore VIC-20 did in fact release a bonafied 8-bit version, I must strike the word "exclusive" from the record and insert the word--"Superior". Graphical comparisons--- Colecovision: --close to Arcade! Intellivision(Europe): ---clearly not "8-bit" programming VIC-20: ---nice 8-bit runner-up das ist alles

Cool, thanks, my memory is beginning to fail me at my old age! It was only a few weeks ago I played it too, I should remember! Frogger originally came with special directional overlays, which promoted keypad use: Most of these are long lost and forgotten, but they certainly made for a different game.

Congrads, Lord Thag on the huge Colecovision cache! You're definitely right about the games for this console. The programming got progressively better as the system peaked in mid '83. All of the best titles were released in one run of limited numbers about the time of the great "game crash" ca 1984, making them somewhat and/or very rare. (My) Top 3 reasons for dusting off the old Colecovision: I. It's an excellent sister console to the Atari 5200 b/c it has many great arcade ports which are either in the "rumour mill" and/or were never considered for the Super System, such as: Tutankham(un)---an 8-bit exclusive & incredibly accurate port of the Arcade (--I dumped alot of quarters into this one)--well worth tracking down...Good Luck Mr. Do---another impressive port, which was oddly overlooked for the 5200 (it does exist on Atari 8-bit disk however and could be converted by some genius with the wherewithal, until then... ) Q*Bert's Qubes---this game barely made it out the door late '84 and is near impossible to find, but the hunter(if successful) is rewarded with and excellent quality sequel which is extremely fun to play! All of the Xonox titles, which are a vast improvement over 2600 counterparts; Artillary Duel is GREAT... Other quality Arcade level titles: Ladybug, Time Pilot, Mouse Trap, Mr. Do's Castle---(slightly better gameplay than 5200), Venture---(best home version by far) . II. The controllers are durable and have stood the test of time; also, joystick extensions which greatly enhance gameplay are still available for purchase: Note to those who dislike the stubby circular sticks... III. Quite possibly the Biggest reason: The 2600 adaptor practically eliminates the need for the VCS, with the exception of a handful of obscure 3rd party carts, which should work on the 7800 anyways. ...And that's my 25 cents worth .

Yah, I haven't gotten any of the available Preppie roms to work either with the Flash-Cart . I'm not sure what's up with this game. I'm suprised it hasn't been mentioned here before. I think you are the first to start a thread on this. Other ROMs that don't work on the Flash-Cart include: Sport Goofy A.E.(most of the time---but sometimes you get lucky for a while until it freezes) Missile Command +(special ed.) RS Basketball Rev.1 Popeye from the 5200 Analog suite: Livewire & Elevator repairman Time Runner All of these games either don't load at all, or they have the start up screen which either freezes or just turns to black/graphics gibberish . All of the circulating ROMs for these titles need to be cleaned up and debugged.

Excellent Conversion, Fandal...of an amazing game ! I've just tried it on the 5200 console and it works flawlessly. The aforementioned directional "tug" on the spaceship is near negligible and can be fine tuned with the X/Y trimmers on the Wico stick. I blasted my way to level 7 before I was ambushed and wiped out . Points are very hard earned in this game, which enhances the challenge. You have just expanded the 5200 library, and the real HW is the proof :!: I encourage you to do more of these conversions to 5200, as time permits. You have an enviable talent. Three Cheers for Fandal

Wow... I think I'll have what Cafeman is havin'! He was definitely in Da ZONE. Here's my humble attempt to improve: 112,200 I'm starting to believe this is one of the neatest and most addictive unreleased 8-bit games-- ever...I try to stop, but it keeps pulling me back in... -

Ditto on the 5200 controllers. They were(are) highly engineered, expensive, precision built instruments designed for mature computer gamers who took care of their stuff. They just needed to plate the circuits and button contacts with gold(but, more$$) for the longterm. As far as performance--no real problems here...ever. As far as porting Oil's Well to the 5200, I'm suprised it hasn't already been done. I'd love to put it on the flash-cart. It would certainly beat having to track down the Colecovision cart, which is pretty flippin' rare. Maybe Classics could....

This was not made by Wico, but an obscure outfit called Coin Control ca. 1985. It's also digital instead of self-centering analogue,as the Wico Command Control was. Cool thing is the built in Y-cord! --Cheers

Season 2 5200 HSC Round 6 *Satan's Hollow*
atariron82 replied to darthkur's topic in 5200 High Score Club
Not officially it wasn't. It, along with several others, were converted to the 5200 from the Atari 800 series computers. So there is no cart for it? There's a cart for it. Have a look see: -
Nice to know you got your hands on one of the neatest consoles ever devised... Now to get it working right--a messed up picture aint no fun. If the game(s) run ok and respond properly to input from the controllers, you're more than half way there. Are you using a new HD/LCD flat widescreen type TV or an older tube set? You may be experiencing the "venetian blinds effect" if using your classic system on a newer non-tube set. Also, make sure your channel select switch is not on ch2(square)--that might really mess things up since there's usually a local ch2 signal(for the time being). The 'Circle' is ch3 and is the default setting from the factory. --Later

The ultimate 5200 UFO, 24 years in the works?...Absolutely incredible! I wanted this when I was 11, but the thought of finally getting a near arcade perfect, expertly progammed cart(by the original programmer) with an actual box and book like the movie, is way more exciting now. ---still stunned & half speechless...
