  1. Hello,

I'm trying to get my collection of 2600 games going, but eBay is a really slow and expensive process. I mean, I'd like to have Pitfall!, but $5.95 with a gunky, torn up label? No thanks!

All you guys out there that have about 100+ games, how do you do it? I would buy from Hozer if his repro carts weren't more expensive than the orginals. Have tried garage sales with NO luck.

DJMike  I remember the music as being pretty true to the theme music. Actually, pretty good by 2600 standards.

I wasn't bashing the Atari 2600 sound system; I'm sure it sounded pretty good. I was expressing how bad the Atari emulators do such a terrible job in recreating the sounds from the original Atari games. Stella X's emulation of the Peter Gunn theme on Spy Hunter sounds like crap, although I'm sure the actual Atari cart does a decent job with the Peter Gunn theme. Same for the Halloween theme here. Just another reason why the emulators don't compare to popping in the actual cart on the Atari. Maybe it was meant to be.

  3. Or, here's a great idea if you can find one: the "Game Centers" that Atari was selling in their catalogs about 20 years ago. Most people on ebay won't sell you one unless you're interested in buying a console, too. If anyone knows where I can buy one of those game centers that would be very helpful.

  4. Hello,

I have an Atari 2600 that has a black front on it instead of the woodgrain one (is that called the Darth Vader one?). Anyways, I have two questions, one about the joysticks and another about the paddles.

    1. Most 2600 joysticks I see floating around here have the small red buttons on them. However, my Atari joystick has a huge YELLOW button on it and it says "GEMSTICK". Was this the original joystick packed with my 2600?

    2. Most 2600 PADDLES I see floating around on eBay have either a tennis or a driving sticker below the knob. Mine doesn't have either of these; It's just black where others have that tennis or driving icon. Was this the original paddle I got?

I know these probably sounds like stupid questions to those who know, but I just wanted to know. Thanks!

  5. I just played Halloween on my emulator about 7 minutes ago for the first time. Pretty cool.

Has anyone else had problems with the music on the Stella X emulator? I have Star Wars: Jedi Arena on Atari, and just to check Stella's accuracy, I played it on the computer. The emulator has a REAL problem with music; the Star Wars theme sounds MUCH better on the actual Atari than on the emulator.

Anyways, what does that have to do with the Halloween game? The Halloween theme music I love is being butchered by the emulator! I doubt it sounds this bad on the Atari. Does it? I realize the 2600 is no boom box, but Stella X REALLY made the music annoying.

  6. H.E.R.O all the way! (Of course, I just had to say that).

I always liked the COMBAT-era labels and I think the silver labels that aren't too scratched up look very nice as well.

It's not the label variations that bother me but instead the varying shape of the carts. For example, COMBAT, HAUNTED HOUSE, PACMAN, POLE POSITION, and DIG DUG will all stack very neatly on top of each other. However, you try stacking Star Wars: Jedi Arena, Q-Bert, Journey Escape and Cosmic Ark on top of each other without it falling over and that requires some adjusting. Oh, well, now I'm whining.........

  7. lol Tempest... the manual is full of "all the fans suck" messages; if you read the descriptions of the "enemies" it will make you wonder if Journey was trying to shoo away fans. Those little hearts with legs are the fans, and according to this game, running into fans is bad.

It's almost like a parody of game that would be shown on the Simpsons. The only good thing I can say about that game is the music was duplicated very well into the Atari system.

We have the Journey record, and since the game shares the same cover art as the album, we bought it on impulse.

  8. Maybe I'll get chewed out for this, but I remember "Journey: Escape" with the least fondness. I could never run fast enough to avoid all the hearts AND get to the destination on time. Here was my collection as a kid:

    Combat

    Haunted House

    Pac-Man

    Texas Chainsaw Massacre

    Pole Position

    Dig Dug

    H.E.R.O

    Journey: Escape

    Cosmic Ark

    Star Wars: Jedi Arena

    Q-Bert

  9. When I was searching through many boxes one time in our basement, I accidently kicked a little black thing. I went over, picked it up, and it turned out to be Cosmic Ark, a game I didn't know we had before! And I love it!

  10. After 20 years of faithful service, one of the paddle controllers broke. I was playing "Star Wars: Jedi Arena" and the lightsaber wouldn't move anymore.

I opened up the potentiometer inside and saw that the contact was in great shape, but the circular thing that looks like gold was pretty torn up. I went to Radio Shack and the guy measured something and said the pot was 1.24 Megahertz. What's that mean?

He didn't have a potentiometer like that and I finally threw it away. The other paddle worked just fine. Darn. Any place I can get a new one?

  11. Ouch, this brings up a bad childhood memory. Believe it or not, I used to have this game a long time ago. It disappeared around 1993 when my parents cleaned up our basement. By that time, our copy of Texas Chainsaw Massacre wasn't working anyways, though. But we used to have it. AARRGGHH!!

It's on eBay right now but I'm debating wheter it's worth the price or not.

As for the weird ending, I never remembered that, or at least from what I remember.

Just know you're pretty lucky to still have that game. :-)
