  1. *Harrumphs in disdain...* Black & white on a 'colour' computer? Ha!
  2. Another Vic 20 here and (of course, being my first) it's still my favourite 8 bit. I have respect for the others but nothing will ever touch that moment on Christmas morning 1984 when I hooked up that thing and saw the cyan and white glow for the first time. All computers should have a cyan border. Life would be better for everyone then.
  3. You know, I was going to respond to your points but why bother...
  4. I'm interested in a PAL version depending on price and release date. Talking of release, will it be a limited release?
  5. Maybe we should just change the title of the thread to "Is It Fact That Nintendo Saved Gaming in North America", declare the answer "yes" and then we can let THE REST OF THE WORLD get on with it... Ataris crash meant NOTHING in the rest of the world. It caused a hiccup in gaming in North America. The NES meant VERY LITTLE to the rest of the world. It only really made a big impact in Japan and North America. The REST OF THE WORLD were getting on with gaming on 8 bit computers and, to a lesser extent, Sega systems. Do you know that where I come from until the PSX came about consoles were considered a bit of a joke in general and were only really for rich, stupid people who could afford the exhorbatant games prices and could'nt use a real computer?? The NES meant NOTHING. And to say there would be no Master System without the NES is just such bollocks. Sega would just decide to stop producing new consoles after the SG1000? Why would a successful international company do that?! Nonsense... Anyway, that's me said my piece again. Just go back to your little NES bubble land...
  6. Temple of Apshai started out on the Vic 20. That would be a good template for a Roguelike on the VCS. The Vic is pretty limited too and only has the one button but the game plays well and feels pretty roguelike if you ask me. Definitely a good frame of reference - the is, after all, a classic in it's own right.
  7. I presume your in the US? If so, I'd just buy a 'lot' of eBay and get stuck in. It's not going to break the bank and at the very least it'll give you a weekend of fun but still cost less than going to the cinema and a club. Also, the consoles are simple tech and thus very robust. I wouldn't worry about it's lifespan or state of repair - just don't buy one that hasn't been tested (that's eBay talk for either "I'm lazy but want your money anyway" or "it's broken but don't want to tell you"). Any 9 pin joystick will work so you don't have to worry about that either. You can even use a Megadrive/Genesis controller if you want something more 'modern'. Most of all, have fun! It's a cheap console with lots of cheap games. Don't sweat it too much.
  8. So, computers that play games don't count but game machines that turn into computers do? That's kinda like having you cake and eating it, isn't it? Again, this is off topic but I thought I'd share as it just popped in my head. I've never really got the NES. I love other Nintendo consoles but just not the NES. I've tried, I've really tried. I bought one, bought lots of games, played emulators and played lots of 'import' ROMs. I've watched lots of YT videos and read lots of books, fansites and blogs. I've seen all the nostalic fan art and heard all the songs but I just don't feel anything for the system. I don't know why. Maybe it's the iconoclast (it's so bloody 'cool' at the minute) in me, as I have and love plenty of other old systems I didn't have as a child...
  9. Yeah, that is something that drives me crazy about a LOT of GBA games. There really was no excuse for it. Just a cheap move, if you ask me. And it ultimately hurts the legacy of the system too. Back to Saturn outrun though; Does anyone know if it runs at 25 FPS or 30 FPS? I know that it doesn't have the 60 frames option...
  10. I'll need to track down a copy of the Saturn one when I get back to the UK. I hear it has pretty ugly borders though... the bane of the PAL gamer!
  11. Or, indeed, PAL gamers (me) who later found that a lot of games ran too 'fast' at 60Hz! As a European gamer sometimes the internet can be a frustrating place. Very often in threads like this or in YT videos there is a presumption that we're all from North America. There is a really big world out here and it would be nice to be considered a little more often. This is OT but furthers my point I think. Most sites have a marketplace. Most Europeans qualify their buy, sell or trade post titles by stating PAL or suchlike. Rarely do I see that in posts from Americans. They just state the item and only when you go in to the thread you confirm that, yep, it's an NTSC game or console. Sometimes I've even had to ask specifically if the item is PAL or NTSC the presumtion of the OP is so strong! Granted things around here aren't quite so bad but it still happens more than you'd think. Now, take that mentality and apply it to threads like this... You get the same things: NES, Mario and the Big Crash of '83. Shock, horror. Most of the world didn't give a toss about the NES, Mario and we didn't have a Big Crash of '83... I made a 'quip' post above pointing out the NES according to Youtube. However in all seriousness I'm going to be controversial and say the C64. There. Said it. / Whinge ends.
  12. Fact: Nintendo didn't 'save' gaming in Europe or the USSR. It didn't need saving even with all the rampant pirating in the 80s. Both Europe and the USSR were fine thank you. It's true that the 8 bit hardware market reached saturation point and a lot of companies went bust but all in all the software just kept coming and, indeed, still does (have you seen the speccy and C64 scenes?!). The 8 bit computer is dead! Long live the 8 bit computer!
  13. How does the PC version of Outrun as on Steam compare to the PS2 or XBox versions? Also, no love for the GBA port? I think that version is the closest there is to the arcade. Certainly closer than the Megadrive version...
  14. A fair compromise for me would be what I like to call the "Demon Attack Approach ©". That is, sparse enemy count but more sophisticated enemy movement. I reckon the 2600 could use that principle to have one or two baddies (or even four if you want the whole group diving thing) on screen but have them swooping and diving while adding the space ship 'scoop' mechanic. I can see that working quite well actually. Afterall, once your used to Demon Attack you don't really notice the lack of on screen baddies...
  15. Judging by Youtube it would be NES and SNES. Every second game (retro or not!) video is about Mario, Megaman and Japanese RPGs. Continuing using my somewhat questionable gauge (Youtube). I would say that the GBA is sadly under represented. There are a lot of gameplay and playthrough videos (God, those are boring!) but there's very little other content. Relatively few real reviews of games and certainly no 'gamer culture' homages and the like. It can't hold a candle to the cache that the original DMG has. It's a shame 'cos it's such a great little system and still one of my favourites.
  16. This isn't really on topic but I thought it had some pertinance... I was a geek in the 80s and all my friends were geeks too. We were all avid game players and were obsessed by the whole 'fad'. We did the whole BBS thing, game clubs and meetings. We bought all the magazines and watched what little coverage there was on telly. NONE of us had a console after the VCS or Videopac (which rarely gets a decent mention in any of these 'top of' articles). Speccys, Vic 20s, C64s, C16s, CPCs, Ataris, Beebs, Electrons, Dragons and goodness knows what else. Nobody I ever knew gave a shit about consoles until the SNES and Megadrive and even then half of us (including me) still preferred gaming and trading on the (by then popular) Amiga because it was a hell of a lot cheaper (50 quid for SNES vs 10 quid for a ton of Amiga games and 2-3 quid for C64 or Speccy titles). There seems to be a lot of revisionism going on from gamers and collectors over here in Europe. The number of people that talk as if the NES was just an everyday and ubiquitous gaming item over here is astounding. Certainly one or two people had a Master System (the rich kids) and, admittedly, I did meet one person (super rich family - he had everything...) once who had a NES but neither me or my friends were that impressed. Sure, he was playing SMB (the NES fanboy go-to argument) but his only real selling point over our Amigas and STs was the fact that the games used 2 buttons. Wow. From my experience growing up as a gamer the real game changer wasn't SMB at all. It was Street Fighter II (a console generation after the NES). SF II was the first game that people wanted to play at home that didn't translate well to the home computer (we didn't call them PCs back then)... The NES never even came up in discussion accept in mockery of the price of the games...
  17. All of these 'top of..' lists are spurious. It's just a way to get views on sites and have a chat. The telly's full of programmes doing the same thing. They're all just time killers. They should never be taken seriously. Unless, of course, the VCS is number one. In that case it's obviously scientific fact.
  18. Does the cart release also include the ROM pack goodies too (Making of RTF and ROM files)? Or would one be expected to buy that separately?
  19. If it looked like that on launch I would've bought one just for the fun of it. It would be the coolest looking Blu-ray player in the land! A matching telly would be great too...

    JumpVCS

I just joined your mailng list. Both this a Brik look really cool. I can't really afford to buy any more games before next year (I've a big lot pending payment) but if they're still floating around next year I'll definitely pick up Brik and this.
  21. It's just a video of two blokes playing some games. It's not a review show. I don't have a problem with that. I don't expect every game player on YT to know about every game. I don't expect them to research all the time either. If it was a review show then, yes, research is required but if it's just a couple of guys shooting the shit and having fun I don't see what the problem is. I enjoyed it though, I have to admit, I did shout at the screen "It's Defender II!"

    AVGN Game

Lodmot, thank you for sharing your game with us.
  23. Thanks for the help. Boy, is that an obscure way to set up a second fire button... Booster Grip button=Megadrive button 2? It's made all the more confusing as the Game Properties menu is already aware that the game uses a Megadrive (Genesis) controller. I inferred from that that Stella would have just mapped a 2nd button automatically. I've just made a request to Stephena regarding the GUI so I think I'll wait until I've given him a gift (I can't use Paypal where I am just now) before asking for anything else but I think I'll ask for just a 'straight' Genesis controller option in the input menu. After all, there are quite a number of games that support it now thanks to you lot.
  24. Looking forward to your Vic videos AtariLeaf.
