How Atari Box Art turned 8 bit games into virtual wonderlands
PFL replied to 128bytes's topic in Atari 2600
^ It is gorgeous. I love that old school sci-fi thing. I suppose it's too big to scan? -
AFAIK paddles don't work on the Stelladaptor. Only digital joysticks do.

Just wanted to say that this is looking really good so far. Being really ignoraant of such things I thought i'd ask: When Coily starts to move will Q*Bert start to flicker? Also, will that cause the coloured squares to flicker more?

Not a bad profit across both auctions there mkiker. It's nice to see that your altruism in sharing this game with others brings rewards of its own.
-
Thanks for posting all of that. It's always nice to hear the full story.

Oh boy does that poster look cool. I can't wait to get this, blow up the poster to A2 and pin it on my wall.

Any chance of some sort of synopsis of what was said re Pacman on your Facebook group? I'd be really interested in what rumours were brought up and which ones were dispelled by Tod. Verbatim responses would be hugely appreciated if possible. I'm in China and have no FB - that's why I'm asking. Thanks in hope.

I'm looking forward to trying out this new mechanic. Have you decided any other goodies or are you planning on keeping it 'simple'?

I was just wondering does anyone have any idea what size the user base is these days. Judging by this forum there is a lot of activity with a lot of posts every day but then again the forum caters for a lot of different systems and there seems to be a few very active posters which make up a lot of the activity... So, any idea?
-
^ I agree. No system back then was 'arcade accurate' though most claimed in some form or other to be just that! The charm, for me, off all the old systems is the different flavours each systen brought to their respective ports or clones. Pacman on the 2600 is a good game. It's just not the arcade game but then neither was Asteroids, Missile Command or Space Invaders... In my world as a youngster the game was far from a flop in any form. It was just another fun game on a system that I never expected to compete with an arcade machine.

Can the engine be used to create another game or do First Star have dibs on that too? It would be nice to see more maze type games. Have you guys played Rockman on the VIC 20? That game would be great on the 2600...
-
^ That would be cool! It's kind of surprising how few (bat &) ball games are actually on the system considering that's exactly what the system was designed for! There's a game on the VIC 20 called Pinball Spectacular. It's kinda like a pinball game but with a break out feel. Something like that would be pretty groovy on the 2600. Anyway, back on topic, Midnight Magic could do with an upgrade (and more tables).
-
^ Me neither. I'll try it out on my Harmony later though. PS: Is it just me or does Ms Snake have more than a passing resemblance to Daisy Duck?
-
It is good fun. The really dark screen is pretty hard though. Quite an interesting and spooky level.

It's official... I lost my 2600 game collection :(

Sorry for your bad luck bloke. I had something similar happen to me once though it was with my clothes. I was moving flat and threw all my clothes into 6 bin bags. I was going to donate 3 to the charity shop and the other 3 were my clothes. Guess which ones I gave away by accident... Killer! I had to spend the next year or so wearing the very same clothes I wanted rid off! -
The more I see the artwork on the cart the more I like it. It's like a Dali-esque take on Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas! Is there a high resolution version of that? I'd love to print up a poster for my new flat.
-
Well, at least you found out something about why it's hard to find (no S sticker) so I suppose it's not a total loss. Good luck in your search.

Good call on Q*Bert. It's another 'nearly' game to my mind. Also, I was randomly following links and ended up over at Video Game Critic. I read the review for Night Driver and I agree. The car graphics are just horrible. That would be an easy fix for someone with know-how to make a great game look pretty... EDIT: Oh, and honourable mention goes to ET.

If you decide to come back to this RT I think RevEng's idea is a cool one. It keeps the game from going down the Arkanoid route but allows a little tactical thinking and variation in the game. Maybe even evolve the idea into 'chain' style scoring like some shmups (ie/ Ikaruga) that, too, could be fun. PS: I actually like the fact the game is for joystick play.
-
Centipede and Millipede with track ball support would be super cool too. I'm pretty sure the graphics could be souped up too. So, that's my 3: Pole Position Centipede Millipede

Looks interesting. I like the art work for the cart. Is that your work too? Oh, and is the 'complete' copy a boxed version or something else (ie cart and manual)?
-
Cool beans. I'll PM you anon.
