    Yes. I think it's a great system with some wonderful exclusive and/or quirky games on it. Metroid Prime, Windwaker, PN 07, Wario World, Killer 7, Resident Evil Remake, RE 4, Pacman Vs, Crystal Chronicles,Battalion Wars, F-Zero GX and tons of other games that are just great.

     

    One of the 'Cubes biggest assets, for me, is the Game Boy Player. That thing is invaluable to me. I love that I can play any GB, GBC and GBA (except Kirby's Tilt'n'Tumble!) on my TV with hifi stereo and then take the same games on the go. And that was years before the PSP/Vita things...

     

    The system has a personality all it's own, what with the Easter Egg boot up sounds and the slick settings menu.

     

    Physically, I think the 'Cube is the nicest looking system of that generation. A black 'Cube with a GB Player attached and a Hori GBP controller is just too sexy. Then throw in a Wavebird (especially the silver one!) and you've got one lovely looking system. The XBox, on the other hand, is just a massive black box and the PS2 looks like a stereo heat sink out of the trunk of some gangster's low ride!

     

    The controller is also the most comfortable for me and the analogue stick is second to none.

     

    I love the 'Cube! Got it on day one and still have hooked up to my telly! Such a shame it was dismissed as a kiddie system. :(

    TBH, I'm in no hurry. A long time ago I decided to get a 7800 and plumped for one of Golden Ax's Anniversary specials. Between the wait for that and the wait for this my attraction to the 7800 has somewhat ebbed... Maybe one day I'll eventually have both in hand but until then - I ain't holding my breath!

    Ha! Looks just like my telly... :)

     

    It seems silly to say but I'm really looking forward to running this on my netbook. Thanks for all your hard work. As soon as I get a job I'll make a wee donation (I promise!).

    I think that's what makes the comparison so interesting. They're very different beasts but both have shared titles such as Galaxians, Donkey etc. And then there are the games that are very different - The Vic has it's text adventures while the VCS has it's graphical adventures for instance.

     

    I find them to be very complimentary to each other and by owning both systems I have access to pretty much every style of game from that era. That's pretty cool!

     

    The Megacart is indeed a nice piece of kit. It's great to have so many games all available on the Vic at the flick of a switch. I'm from the UK so most of my gaming in my youth was by way of the Datasette. I feel spoiled having both the Megacart and the Harmony these days! Instant 'on',silent machines with thousands of games avaible in the blink of an eye... Who needs PS3 and Xbox with their whirling fans and disc loading and internet downloaded updates!?!

    Bandits on Vic20 is pretty good, sadly it's one title that isn't quite emulated properly due to some of its code, and it gradually falls apart in Vice. Pity. You really need to play it on real hardware.

     

    Can you play it on a PAL system? I thought it was NTSC only... It'd be nice if there was a PAL build. :)

    The Vic port is my favourite. The game really suits the chunky graphics. If you want Jeff Minter games I go with Gridrunner - again my favourite version of the game. And, if you can, you should check out the Atarisoft games. I love the Vic port of Moon Patrol too. :)

     

    There seems to be a little spurt of interest in the Vic of late. I've found myself posting in quite a few threads over a couple of gaming forums. Nice to see my favourite machine getting some love. :)

    See, for me, spending £2 on a Mastertronic tape versus £15-£20 for a cartridge (whether Vic or VCS) was a big tipping point. My family was pretty poor so when I saw the opportunity to buy a cheap computer that I could buy cheap games for as well as the ability to make my own and pirate my friends' games it was just to tempting!

     

    It's a personal thing, I know, but I love the irony that the Atarisoft games were better on the Vic than the 2600! I mean, Donkey Kong even has all the levels in it - I don't think any other contemporary version had that...

     

    As has been mentioned by others both systems have strengths and weaknesses. That's why I find the comparison interesting. :)

    Great game. Complete arcade mayhem in 3.5k of retro tapey goodness!

     

    I actually first played it on the Commodore 16 when it first came out and spent hours being blown away (literally and figuratively!) by the evil space hordes. My first love was the Vic but I just presumed the Vic just couldn't pull it off convincingly. Imagine my surprise when I found it on eBay only a couple of years ago!

     

    One of my favourite games on my favourite system - gotta love it!

     

    Oh, PS: Nice video... Bloody doors!

    I've seen quite a few threads regarding the 2600 Vs "..." but never for the Vic.

     

    To my mind, it's quite an interesting comparison. Both machines have similar power are from roughly the same era but both machines tackle coding games in a very different manner.

     

    I love the 'personalities of both machines but I'd have to come down on the side of the Vic. Mainly because it has it's own keyboard and built-in language.

     

    Picking a 'winner' when it comes to games is pretty tough. The Vic has a smaller library of quality titles I reckon but some of the 2600 versions of corresponding games lack sometimes - for example, I've yet to find a better version of Omega Race than the Vic port...

     

    What do you guys think? Just curious. :)

    I got around to sticking your PAL60 Demon Attack ROM on my Harmony cart. It doesn't seem to work on my system. I've got a Chinese 2600jr so that's maybe the problem as I've heard of compatibility issues with that machine...

     

    When I boot the ROM off the cart the screen distorts, goes black and white and there is a high pitched squeal. Same for River Raid...

    The second one looks the closest to my eye. You should maybe ask over at the Denial forum too. Those guys are Vic graphics experts (even inventing new hi res formats!). :)

     

    I understand your problem though. I've always wanted to make some pixel art for the Vic but the pixel shape is really idiosyncratic - I suppose that's inevitable for the world's first 'widescreen' computer! :P

    That's really nice. I hope you can upload it sometime. Do you have to get permission first, do you think?

     

    I was wondering if you would consider making PAL versions of at least some of your hacks. They're great to play in Stella as is and I really enjoy them but when I play them on my 2600jr with my Harmony cart the colours are often strange. It really affects Pacman which is a shame... :)

    I have never owned an Atari computer but I love 8 bit machines and have been toying with the idea of getting one. I've had a look around the interwebs and I like the cheesy look of the 1600 XEGS.

     

    Is it a good place to start on the Atari 8 bit computing road? It seems to be pretty compatible but I thought I'd ask you guys. :)

     

    Also; Silly Question 374b - Is it compatible with 2600 carts?

    It's the best money I ever spent on an old console. It just works like it's supposed to. It's fast, intuitive and allows you to play all the new goodies that keep on coming out - For instance, Star Castle just got a Release Candidate today. I've already played it on my 2600 Jr*... :)

     

     

     

     

     

    Erm, that was a lie. I got confused - I played the pre RC build though!
