Which console is better? Atari or NES?
PFL replied to Andromeda Stardust's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I've never understood this hang up with generations of consoles. Sure, the most successful consoles tend to come out every few years in 'competition' with each other but the only fact I see is that consoles (failures or otherwise) come out in a steady stream pretty much constantly... Kind of like tellys. I never hear people talking about (and spending nearly 5 pages on a forum!) what generation their telly is though! To me, there are two 'generations' of consoles: Old and Not-so-old - and that definition changes on a daily basis depending what mood I'm in. -
Hey Davy and bataais, if you're interested in getting back into this would you consider some of these hacks? http://atariage.com/forums/topic/154984-hack-project-thread-galaxian-arcade-double-dragon-xenophobe-etc/ I know I've asked loads of times in this thread (and you were even kind enough to convert Galaxian Arcade a while ago) but some of them are so lovely it would be great to play them 'properly' on a real machine.

I haven't tried the game out yet but I'm loving the title screen.

Atari didn't change my world in the early days. By the time I was interested in computers and games there were already plenty of other systems out and about and, in fact, I would say it was the Vic 20 that changed my world back then. However, about 10 or so years ago Atari (more pertinently, the 2600) did change my gaming world. Being jaded by what I saw as the impending future of video gaming and the state of the PC hardware arms race I had pretty much given up on gaming. Then I 'discovered' the 2600 and the community around it that was still alive and well. The maturity that prevails in these forums and the sheer quality and quantity of new software and hardware has reinvigorated my gaming world. There really is no other 'games scene' that has the world wide appeal and age gap spanning power and general approachability of the lowly 2600*... *IMHO

Yep! Been playing it all night. Here's the thread with the PAL60 ROM: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/173190-seaweed-assault/

Thank you very much for coming back to this game RT. I, for one, really appreciate it. It will be on my Harmony within about 3 seconds of hitting the post button for this post.

Well, his email, taken from his website, is: alex (AT) herbs64.com if someone wanted to send him a mail...

I really hope that all's well with Alex and that he's happy and healthy. It's always distressing to hear of others' plights but not hearing the outcome...

Indeed. I still feel a pang when I play the game on my PAL telly and have to see the off-colour seaweed!

My PAL Jr RF signal is as near perfect as I could hope foron my CRT. There's never any static. My composite modded Jr is even clearer though I actually miss the colour bleeding and slight blur when using it though the mod's needed for todays LCD tellys. Bleeding and blur on a CRT are a part of the beauty of old RF systems. I've found over the years that the telly itself tends to be the cause of most RF distortion and static. As has already been suggested I would also recommend running the RF lead directly to the telly and adjust the colour settings and the like. You might be surprised just how pretty you can make the picture.

Never knew this existed let alone seen it! Tell you what though. Ghost of Yars would be a great name for a sequel...

I'm really glad to see that you're still working on this. I've downloaded and hope to play with it later tonight or tomorrow.

Have you ever lost sleep because you couldn't stop playing a game?
PFL replied to Rhindle The Red's topic in Poll Forum
Last night I fell into the no-sleep trap. This time it was the Streets of Rage Remake. I downloaded the game and decided to have a quick blast to make sure it was working okay. Then I realised I would have to play it to the end a couple of times to unlock the shop. 5 am came and went, went to bed around 6 and now I'm up again at 10. This is the first game to grab me like that (apart from Doom) in years even though I've played it a million times before! -
What is the best home port of Donkey Kong?
PFL replied to StragglyMarlin5's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Not sure of the best version but my favourite official port is the Vic 20 version. It's chunky and a little slow but it holds its own and it's the version I know best. For me, a more intersting question would be what is the best clone with 'improvements' and extra features... -
He is a demanding leader but the world is better for it.

Great stuff guys. Following the thread in the hopes of further updates.

Just wanted to say that this is genius! Thanks for sharing.

Loving that last shot! I'll have to try it out. Thanks for sharing.

I'm not a coder but I'm definitely following this. It's looking really good so far. Keep up the good work.

Which console is better? Atari or NES?
PFL replied to Andromeda Stardust's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Well a few years ago I bought a VCS and a NES. I then sold the NES as it didn't really offer me anything every other console and computer offered (SNES, Megadrive et al) and, to me, had a really dull palette. I still have the VCS and it's still hooked up to my telly. So, for me, the VCS won / wins... I love it's raw simplicity in the GFX department and I love the dirty lo bit cacophonous sound it produces. Also, as I'm crap at games, completing games on the NES was a no-go for me - it just left me frustrated only getting to see half the game I paid for. However crap I am on the VCS I can always improve my score. The games are also more suitable to my lifestyle. Just switch on, shoot things, switch off then go to work... PS: My number two 8 bit console would be the SMS. It's just a little more vibrant than the NES. -
^ Indeed. Putting both versions onto a double ender would be amazing. Then you could have the telly AND disc experience in one!

I don't have link to hand but I was thinking of the one the was (is?) being sold by Golden ax (looks like a keyring). Are there others? I don't suppose it matters much as implementing such a thing in the Harmony would require it's own development as it couldn't utilise the second joy port. The games that would (in theory) support it would be writing back to the Harmony cart itself rather than another piece of hardware...

This issue is the very reason I gave up using 360 controllers on my PC. It happened with both of my white controllers, my black one and finally with my limited silver one with the adjustable d pad (I foolishly bought the last one thinking they must've fixed the issue after addressing their shocking d pad). Perhaps the issue is more noticeable on PC? Regardles, I now use a Logitech controller and never had the issue once. Thanks for the heads up on the Hori pad. I'll keep an eye open on eBay.
