  1. You can check for pulses at pin 15 with a logic probe. A logic probe simply does pulse beeps, no response is low, , constant tone is high reading. So you can get high, low or pulse. The alternative is to check the pin with an oscilloscope. In which case you would see a either a sine wave or other pattern, or a constant high line, or a low line. basic info needed, besides the probe, pin 1 is at the bottom left with the chip oriented longways left to right and not upside down as you can tell by the writing on the chip. The pins go from bottom left is pin 1, then over to the right side and around to the same end on the top side, then to the left to the last pin. There's frequently a notch on the pin 1 side. Of course the board has to have power to it. Be careful, it is easy to cause a short by touching two points at once.
  2. 10 SOUND 0,100,10,15:GOTO 10 check for pulses qt pin 15 of GTIA while pressing a key. if pulses are missing, check GTIA. If pulse are present check some capacitors (C23 and R5 on NTSC 130XE). check RF modulator.
  3. correct channel switch? Antic and GTIA swap if you can.
  4. I looked at 800xls on ebay. They aren't that many and the prices are high. don't remember right now, but it could cost $100 for a tested working 800xl. So, maybe I'm wrong. New drams would certainly cost less than a total XL replacement. And it would be an experience to replace all 16 of them. So, maybe an investment in a soldering station and iron might be a better way to go. You'd also need a solder sucker pen. If you knew a electronics person, that might be useful, (sorta unlike my comments.) edit. You could give a simple test, and maybe identify a faulty dram, just power it up and wait a minute or two and see if any of the drams are warm, maybe even hot. While you're at it, put your finger on all the chips to see if one is warm.
  5. It is almost certain that some, or all those MT drams are bad. It would be a pretty major job just to replace those. To be honest it would maybe be better to buy a 800XL or XE that is working, A stock 800XL will run probably 90% of games. Good luck. Try ebay.
  6. all you have is a 1010 and an Atari floppy drive. And a PC with internet conection. Right? How are you going to get the DOS/DUP data to your 1010 tape? I suggest a SIO2PC or APE PC serial or USB to SIO adapter, such as the one from Steve Tucker's APE site. There are instructions to make a SIO2PC adapter, fairly easy and cheap. Once you have the adapter and cables, you can make your PC into an Atari hard drive and read/write to your real floppy. You can even use DUP.SYS or SpartaDOS with APE/SIO2PC to format a real floppy and write DOS/DUP to the real floppy. And you can find lots of Atari games/etc online and write them to your floppy.
  7. The NTSC 600XL doesn't have a 5 pin DIN socket. It only uses RF. Here's a 600XL mod text for both a 64k and 5 pin DIN audio/video port for the NTSC 600XL. (I believe the PAL 600XL has a 5 pin DIN socket?) 600XLUP2.zip
  8. You have five questions in your post. It would be good to say what you are connecting your 800xl to, a real floppy drive or a APE/SIO2PC. You access the DOS 2.5 DUP menu from BASIC READY with a "DOS". "DOS" also accesses a SpartaDOS command line from a BASIC READY. There are easy to get collections of games online. Type "FTP ATARI" in Google might work.
  9. Section 9.3 of the A8 FAQ has some info about copying carts. http://www.faqs.org/faqs/atari-8-bit/faq/ Basic knowledge is that an 8k cart is either A or B. B is from $8000 to $9FFF and is rare. A is from $A000 to $BFFF most simple carts. Your fancy cart probably uses all 16k. And uses bank switching to boot (also). You could use Omnimon OS to dump a cart. You'd still need to analyze the cart RUN address and INIT and put a header on the dump. I forget what you use to edit a dumped file, like to defeat the copy protection. Oh, it is a sector editor like ..... can't remember. But you need to be fluent in 6502C assembler. A disassembler. 'DISK WIZARD II' sector editor/disassembler. I no longer remember most of this stuff, if I ever knew.
  10. you did try it with one of the carts in?
  11. Get the 400, just for the game carts, if there are at least several. Then, maybe upgrade to a 800XL or 130XE. If the 400 has 16k, it would be OK too. Some games might require 48k. I believe the 400/800/8bit Atari games are far superior to the 2600 ones. Read the newbie forum at the top of this site.
  12. If this worked as I'm trying, it is two logic charts for all the 130XE LSI. 130XELOGIC.zip
  13. Best Electronics 408-278-1070 1:30-5:30 PM Pacific time. Part # CO12995, or just tell them what you want. $20 minimum order. I suggest getting their catalog, $14.15, that'd be a good item to add up to your $20 with the $4 port. http://www.best-electronics-ca.com
  14. I'm afraid it doesn't work so good in Altirra, at least with the Altirra BASIC. You're supposed to RUN it and it installs a machine routine and gives you the address to USR to. I haven't finished playing with it, but so far I can't get it to work in Altirra. I'm going to use my dump of Atari BASIC and see if it works better than Altirra BASIC. You're supposed to RUN 'RENUMBER.BAS to install the machine routine. It then gives you the base address to USR to.... eg. X=USR(1652) after you install it and then LOAD your BAS to renumber, and LIST it to screen. I think you're supposed to be able to use START and INCREMENT eg. X=USR(2232,10,10). I'm not sure it works at all.
  15. I unarced it. Here's a MYDOS 4.5 .ATR with RENUMBER.BAS from ANALOG #27 (2/85), Angelo Giambra. I believe I REMed it to help use it. MYDOS45.zip
  16. I looked briefly for a PC unarc utility and didn't find one. If I unarc it in Altirra, then I have to extract the file from the .ATR and I don't remember how to do that. Seems like I used 'makeatr'.
  17. here's a .ARC with a BASIC renumber in it. I just can't unarc it and just post the program. The .arc is a bunch of Atari utilities. Basic renumberer. X=USR(given,start,incr.). Always LIST prg. 1st. I guess it makes a USR that you enter 'given', the .BAS filename, 'start' say start at 10 and increment, say 10. UTIL1A shoot, I don't remember. You'll have to figure it out. UTIL1A.ARC
  18. Here's a composite cable from www.myatari.com. 20. I checked. You need SpX to address a drive with letters. 3.2d shows a letter if you type it, but it doesn't work to read a directory. Actually, no SpX doesn't do letters either. So I'm not sure of anything.
  21. SpartaDOS can recognize up to D9: The letters A: to I: are treated the same as D1: to D9: Configuring a drive to D9: I don't believe any drive has that dip switch setting. Altirra recognizes up to D8: which is the same as up to H: . This comes from SpartaDOS manual. I've never actually tried 'H:'. OK, I tried D8: in Altirra. It doesn't work with the drive letters. I can't test with real hardware as I have no way to set a drive as 8. Actually I could test to see if 'A:' is treated the same as 'D1:'. on real hardware. edit: I think I was reading the SpartaX book. So maybe won't work with 3.2g.
  22. http://ftp.pigwa.net/stuff/collections/atari_8bit_demos_and_intros/ oh shoot. I forgot car or rom format.
  23. I don't remember attaching the chroma line to my 1200xl. It displays color with my composite cable. I don't think the 1200xl monitor jack is B&W. You say the color shows with a 1702 monitor, but not with the 'capture card'. I don't know what a capture card is. Or are you using the RF cable to your 1702?
  24. I think there are two 4051 chips near the keyboard socket. The only way I can think is to get or borrow another 800XL and swap keyboards and chips. The 4051s are U24 and U25. Also, the POKEY a large chip, U22. swap them with known good ones. Since there are two 4051, it makes some sense that one of them may be defective.
