Anyone in Indy want some hardware/machines for free?
_The Doctor__ replied to ryanmercer's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
isn't that always the case....and I really needed to replace a broken cartridge slot on the 130XE further edit.... ANYONE near Ryan who does not want the stuff willing to pick it up and ship it to me? come on you know it's funny but true all the same! -
Wilmunder's Star Raiders II released
_The Doctor__ replied to Savetz's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
newer drives do kind of suck in some ways... after moving the platter you have to rework both the pcb's moving either one or two surface mount chips depending on the drive from the old to the new surrogate... the chips contain drive geometry and reassignment data.... That means hot air or infrared rework station, infrared being the better choice.... that being said... the newer drive is easier to recover after that's done because no writing to the disk should be needed or happen and you can pull the data to a final drive using software to fill in the blanks.... sound like Keetah may have done this before old drives.... you can recover the data but the boot/ track zero can be trashed, good news it can sometimes be re written using the data from the exact same hard disk model and rev., you sometimes suddenly have a working drive again.... My money is on Keetah gets it done! -

The Gains of the year, people who make a difference
_The Doctor__ replied to _The Doctor__'s topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Yes absolutely a gain, perfect idea, post his name with mentions and some links of his contributions! -
It is my decision as to what happens, I have ideas for a deluxe version.... and may or may not act upon it depending on my health and reception of what we do with this one and how it is received so far so good up till now... Who knows what the future will bring... ?Who Knows! The above in Baker like intonation, _The Doctor__

ATASCII art like PETSCII art?
_The Doctor__ replied to Steve Mynott's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
ice-t makes a pretty good stab at it... in a terminal program does a good enough job of going beyond petscii and does darn near ibm ansi character set.... with some colors as well not too shabby -
So the ideas are.... the pew pew pew your ship firing could be heard and direct collisions could be heard it's just the distant rocks would not be heard but closer ones might pelt you with debris so that could be heard ship board notification could say target hit for far rocks, thrusters for rotation and movement could be heard etc.

Interesting... whatever the differences are hope upon hope not to lose a good person over some problem between only a couple out of the hundreds that are active here every week. What can you say... Looks like a lot went on before having read about it all and just want to get everyone somewhat content and active again.... KJ on the other hand is central to 3 or 4 major issues and I think he tries to make amends but then blows it again for whatever underlying reason... I can say I don't always word things correctly and probably never will, first step to getting along is to realize that fact for any one of us are not perfect and can't always see things like someone else does. I should realize by now we can't fix things among people whom truly have a conflict of personalities but it can't hurt to try! That being said, I still feel Prowizard is an important, helpful, caring person and would like him to return. -Just a traveler through time and space, _The Doctor__

a8rawconv, a new raw disk conversion utility
_The Doctor__ replied to phaeron's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I think this thread needs to be marked of high importance and post at http://atariage.com/forums/topic/231835-a8rawconv-a-new-raw-disk-conversion-utility/?p=3323983 and we be re-directed to that post... it is a big deal indeed. -
A place to honor those who have become active and contribute that extra something to our community! Kicking it off with http://atariage.com/forums/user/44502-microbry/ Microbry is sharing his fathers legacy with us and filling in the precious pieces that are missing from our collections as well items of interest from OSS. I nice addition to the community indeed Thank you Microbry! Sincerely, _The Doctor__

I just had to play the Santa hats version... which appears in the enhanced version.... I make it thru the bird level no problem, and since I am (IMHO) an OK DK Jr player I guess I have the If I can do it anybody can do it thought process.... The brightness issue I had was how bright the rocks that were added to the dirt became on the spring level only.. which is what I think he was referring to and it did help Junior stand out but I am sure we can all scrutinize that and let him finalize his thoughts on it and put it to bed, I could have been more specific or precise for that matter! The best darn Donkey Kong Junior versions ever I say! The best!

It's not all about death, but loss as well.....conversely that's why I wanted a Gains thread to look at all the people who recently have begun helping with Atari 8 bit hardware, software, knowledge, testing, etc.... People taking new steps and releasing that software, that, article, that insight that makes the experience interesting and joyful..... A way to honor both the new to the community coder, document provider, maker, repair, artist, composer.... as well as the person who had been here forever and suddenly gives us one of those pearls... A true gain for us all! Something to celebrate... I for one want to be on the GAINS list before I end up on the loss list...

about Prowizard...... Why is it when all the crap hits the fan you find kjman and v61 at the base the crapfest..... not the first time we lose people because of either directly or indirectly something the pair had said, done or leads people down the path of hating the community over possible lost revenue? We do this for pleasure.. enjoyment... and to help each other ... a band of brothers.... I have not found a better group of people who have done so much for each other.... I do what I can these days... we all have dis agreements... nobody is perfect and we all know it. I probably had a debate or two with Prowizard.. we eventually make our points and get along... or agree to dis agree... and later we have kind words and help each other out... Not the case when kj gets involved (usually behind the scenes)... not sure why... but there is a darkness surrounding him... Kj did some good things but trust me, I'd rather not deal with him.. Nothing wrong with making a buck... but misleading and applying pressure to a persons head 'til it pops serves no one in the end... Prowizard come back! You have more friends here than you know! We don't want to lose anymore this way... NOT ONE MORE!

You might want to try different DOS disks.... go from the oldest DOS to the newest.... it might give a different result...... oh I see you said you made progress... nevermind... The serial number isn't on or in the cart? Or carts main screen? I could be stabbing in the dark but if you see it do you know where to insert it on the disk?

I think we should list our losses as well as our gains , some fine people have joined our ranks.

All of the games were suppose to initially work on the 800 and with the 5200 in mind.... eventually make their way to the Apple, TI, and the 2600 as well, at the time the 2600 was still very relevant! Rockball in theory would only ever have been allowed to have simple sounds from your own ship... in space you could never hear the rocks being destroyed (there is no air!) I often thought it should have digitized voice report Rocks destroyed or targets destroyed using one of the two methods that allow the screen to remain on and active... but where could we find the memory? with such constraining factors it wasn't to be done.... as time marches on I think Rockball Deluxe would have those things done.... same game with title, sounds and a few goodies sprinkled in....but still without explosion sounds from the rocks unless they run into you or you run into them....when you get destroyed is another story entirely In any event here is the 5200 version, just a straight port with nothing extra. # is OPTION, * is SELECT and PAUSE is the space bar on the 5200 controller Thanks to the generosity of our friend Paul at Playsoft here is Rockball conversion for the 5200. rockball5200.zip Merry Christmas, _The Doctor__ posted in Atari 8 bit forum as well

Does anyone make new Atari 8-bit cartridge shells?
_The Doctor__ replied to Albert's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
depends, I can see 2 halves at a time maybe 4 depending on the molder... also, sometimes slightly heating the mold helps to keep things moving along.... It does require a bit of pressure to get the plastic in... more than one mold set would be the way to go.... they do take some time to cool.... make the mold thick enough to handle some pressure but thin enough to cool quickly... watch a couple of videos on it...... you will see what I mean..... I had the good fortune to help my cousin run an extruder and a molder in the early 90's.....it was very hot in that place during the summer... -
Actually it is spot on to the arcade version, I played the crap out of DKJr on the way to school everyday... This is now the best home computer translation of it I have played.... IMHO The difficulty in the arcade and this are now spot on... A+++ What a difference a few tweaks made

The molds are usually produced be CNC machines and any format accepted for machining should be good.... -
Super SpartaDOS Cartridges Pre-order
_The Doctor__ replied to Dropcheck's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Real time display in terminals are good things, as it is easy to loose yourself while online in irc or on a bbs.... Some DOS's do stamp, some don't, didn't expect it to be a sore subject..... We use a number of DOS that time stamp files not just Sparta X. That is why I had to know if it would work.... Would have been great to have the real time available when sparta x was off and we would be using Real Dos 3 or any of the disk based Sparta DOS's /Pro DOS etc.. with other projects such as the BBS's I am trying to re-construct... Pro or TCPIP Express or any number of uses for that matter... I was really excited to see this project. Full of hope and promise.I think it will help a number of people and will suit their needs perfectly.. The good news is another real time avenue exists and now I wonder if I could use this Sparta Cart with that r time cart...being able to just pop the one cartridge on and off the stack rather than taking them all off and on... It could if the only thing that has been changed in the cart is a driver then we can still have it all. That could be cool.... that being said X is not the only time stamping DOS, time clock in any DOS is still useful...That leads to a new question.... Atarimax 8 mbit cart does not work with real time 8 and can mess it up because of the way it banks.... So still wanting to use this cartridge... would it's banking scheme still work with r time 8 or other stacked carts... If it will I am in. -
Super SpartaDOS Cartridges Pre-order
_The Doctor__ replied to Dropcheck's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Not sure how all the terminal programs handle it either but... Ice-T, Amodem, Express etc etc all seem to get the real time directly from reading the r time 8 hardware, not from the DOS, which is probably why they read the time across DOS types... not sure how bbs pro handles it but I would suspect several parts of it would handle it the same. nice to have it work across the DOS's if possible. Should be easy enough to load ice-t 2.80 and see if it works... just look over to the right hand sid
