Atari 800XL with very faint sound
_The Doctor__ replied to Summer256's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
If you are worried about the power supply, measure the voltage with a meter... or use a scope to see how dirty it's ripple has become.... Dirty power can hurt things and cause seemingly random problem ... as for the op amp, we've seen them go bad or need cleaning and re-seating, very rare to see anything else go bad... clean and re-seat pokey as well if it's socketed -
Create ICSP Programmer for Embedded Micro Controller Chips

Nothing wrong with trying to support full and low voltage programming, you never know when you would need one or the other..... as often is the case in this brave new retro world.... -
This is just wonderful, this is the polish we should have had all those years ago! Collaboration rocks! Merry Christmas Atari style! _The Doctor__

Aquired a new old stock 800XL. Bad cap question.
_The Doctor__ replied to a topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
how much of this is socketed? clean and reseat all the chips carefully.. tried another power supply? take a good memory chip and piggy back it on at a time on the chips in the memory bank ensuring a good fit... sometimes that can help you find a bad memory chip.... all kinds of fun -

http://www.techkits.com/ your very own injection moulding machine there are cheaper ones out there but model 20A has a decent reputation at about 500 dollars give or take... anybody with a cnc machine or nearby machine shop can make the moulds very little dinaro.... plastics aren't much either but...you would have to shop around.... 300 to 600 dollar investment depending on what you find and buy... plastic prices vary greatly from dirt cheap china stuff to 20 a bottle boutique united states specialty mixes I am sure some one will complain they can't just flip it open and have a fully formed and finished cart with all the internals programmed in it already as if by magic...but for the hobbiests on AtariAge the whole I need to spend 100 dollars to case my pcb pbi cart etc etc is solved and pays for itself after about 50 or more units of something are made..... This is something you might consider... good for small batches... squeezing them out while watching a show on tv isn't that big a bother.... whatever color you want.... you can automate the process by using a cnc machine to do the mundane trimming etc.... it does not takes hours to file/smooth edges or nip tabs by hand.. it takes seconds but thats just me... some of us have more time than money you know.... if you want to go all out have the money and space... http://www.usedplasticinjectionmoldingmachines.com/ a zillion screaming chinese manufacturers can make them super cheap but you take your chances sometimes -

there were cheap knock off water based caps with an incorrect formula that made their way into the supply stream...this caused havoc thru out the entire electronics industry and happened again during the launch of the flat screen higher def televisions of today. stolen formula incorrectly done also.... google it maybe.. -

A disclaimer follow by a way for someone to indicate they do not want their work to be distributed and have it removed is usually sufficient. with a blurb about abandonware etc. etc attemps to contact or determine blah blah blah.... -

no reason small screws could not be used in the corner to hold the together, A peg into hole affair could work as well but they wear out if opened and closed to many times -

You are right they build up bases then use the resources on a fighter group then start building back up.....best to nail the enemy bases asap while protecting your own and mop up and at the end or while your on your way between the two! -

_The Doctor__ replied to Albert's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
When looking all the way to what started the thread.... Al was basically looking to get a run of carts shells made with everyone to get a large enough run to share the costs... just like what we are wishing for.... Let us work together to come up with a cart shell that has the support posts in it that can be snapped off to handle different pcb configs... the posts would be present for known pcb types and spacings with a few auxiliary posts for generic pcb's A pair of flush nippers to remove the ones each project does not need and your golden... pass thru slot in the top with tabs like orion/sparta but no lip or ledge If you don't need the pass thru, nip the tabs, a light file or sanding and cover with label... now every cart type is covered... no more mus or fuss.... universal cart shell.... everyone wins! -

wow that reads like a book of all the worst case crap that can happen and reads like it happens every time.... Not my experience in real life.... and trust me if it can go wrong it's probably happened to me..... how about instead of ordering a thousand shells all on your own you get together with the 20 other people all asking about them and doing their own projects to go in with you on the run...splitting the costs... with the number of times we see this exact same request/ conversation one would hope it would happen that way... most of this stuff has already been perfected time and time again... cases of shells don't take up all that much space and are normally packed to take up as little space as possible and then you have to assemble the halves yourself..... even the full height shell I have seen over the years are nested during packing with backs and card covers packed seperate... and since you still have to put the guts in yourself no matter what... the assembly step is of no consequence... send a half case to each and you won't even waste a closet in you house/attic/basement/shed/or trunk.... heck I have had shipments drop shipped directly to multiple locations for little or no cost... having designed enclosure cases labels and catalogs for a dental supply company with higher scrutiny and restrictions on materials and never having all those problems and costs with some very small quantity at that I get very confused by the continual it's so tough/impossible to do with everything but the kitchen sink falling from the sky... If we couldn't get it made we often sifted through the sourcing books of all the business and often found something made for or by someone else... a phone call and a verbal handshake and we helped each other out... often resulting in splitting of costs or making a larger order and splitting it at cost between us... and that was in competitive market.... fast forward twenty years... the other supply houses that didn't work together like we did are gone.. in fact last time I talked with one of the sons running the business... they bought out two of the competitors who were only looking to make a few bucks off the parts rather than looking to lower their bottom lines.... The lowered bottom line houses still stand... the houses that couldn't see this fell.... -

Thorfbgd, I really like the work you have done and would like to see this translated into real use.... I mean why not? Then people could choose after hearing and using them. No need for anyone to say this matters or doesn't matter... what you are doing makes perfect sense!
