Does anyone make new Atari 8-bit cartridge shells?
_The Doctor__ replied to Albert's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
the whole lets keep a secret where you can get stuff from only hurts the community....and keeps a certain few in control of every thing.... keeping lots of people from even trying.... You are not keeping 'the competition' down... your just outright denying anything from being made or getting done and pricing higher with more and more out of the market... as you see less and less people remember it was the secret keeper himself who helped kill his own user base.... the more you restrict, the less YOU get! -

Help troubleshooting Atari 800
_The Doctor__ replied to jerichoinbk's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
almost any 800 that has failed for me was cured by pulling it out cleaning it and re-seating it...... only a few had the odd power supply or dirty sticky switch problem... followed by the dreaded task of either cleaning keyboard contacts or just pushing keys a million times to try to let them clean themselves.... lets face it the 800 is a tank.... I've seen them hurled across a room and re assembled... and keep on keeping on..... I bet you have a working 800 after a tear down cleaning and re-assembly... just pay attention and label what came from where... even the memory cards.... shouldn't matter but sometimes it does depending on what has been done to the 800, I had one that only recognized memory upgrades in a certain order and one that had a card that affected video clarity if plugged in one of the other slots... for whatever reason..... -
Wilmunder's Star Raiders II released
_The Doctor__ replied to Savetz's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Just be a good pilot and you will never be a suckzors of a black hole... problem solved.... not very difficult to pilot around in warp/hyperspace. Maybe if you dump out in a sector with a black hole in it you could escape... but the gravitational effect and the way it sucks up things down to a photon or smaller makes that a difficult prospect... going to play to check the behavior, I always dumped out within a few sectors of where I wanted to be when distracted during game play.... and botched a warp..... I don't get all mad at the program because it was me who made the mistake... squirrel... ball.... oh crap kitty cat! remember... no matter where you go.... there you are... _The Doctor__ -
Anyone use their Atari 8 to drive stepper motors?
_The Doctor__ replied to mytek's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I find it hard to believe someone hasn't bought or posted about the tablets and readers on AtariAge before....I know I had a conversation with someone about the tablet and we got it working for him...I doubt it was a pm.... -
Anyone use their Atari 8 to drive stepper motors?
_The Doctor__ replied to mytek's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I only remember the cassette being in the sio port, everything else was thru joystick ports as far as I can remember.... the wires were all together going off the front ports and exitting together in in a bundle to the right of the Atari where it was wrapped with a cloth like tape to the sio cord and power cord down to the floor(I did not tear it apart to see if any of it was spliced or interconnected...but it could have been, The weird thing was a sort of tablet/pad it went into to more than one joystick port and required pulling harness out and plugging in the tracing pad ..... then you had to swap it out again to go back to machining.... thank god the joystick ports all faced to the front on the 800! I believe a tape reader like it was on ebay in the past 3 or 4 years though..... at least I remember seeing it and thinking hey! I know what that is! -
Deluxe Invaders (Hack Request)
_The Doctor__ replied to Grevle's topic in Atari 5200 / 8-bit Programming
I just dug this out today, at first everyone thought the sound was neat... but after a bit the tone was ruled to be too pure and full and the player shots do indeed drown out the alien march sound.... instead of raising the duh duh and overdriving the channel... maybe keeping all at level 8 and dropping player shots to a way smaller value would have been the thing to do.... I really do like the idea... just in practice.. too much ting ting and not enough chunk chunk chunk -
You actually did it! I remember conversation about this and am glad you acted upon it. Getting sick sucks... you miss so much even when you appear to have all the time in the world everyday... in one sense....... and really much less time to get it all done in..... before time is completely up....

I think Stephen makes and excellent point at that, really would make sense to track down Harris and his stuff... I think it would be an incredible multi part interview as well!
-
You trying to make me order this aren't you... but I still can't..... But I want to!

someone has to have it in their collection... these things always tend to turn up after we nearly give up hope.... I still would like to see a major push for all the non game oriented educational and practical applications to be sought and archived....

Anyone use their Atari 8 to drive stepper motors?
_The Doctor__ replied to mytek's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
last time I saw anything remotely controlling steppers from the Atari was in a machine shop in Warren County, New Jersey.... It was an Atari 800 and all four joystick ports were being used...the programs were all on cassette tape and paper tape.... it was later donated to Warren county Vocational Technical School where I am sure it eventually met it's demise... it controlled x,y,z and angle positions a,b and finally motor speed/ on off... the values had to be calibrated/adjusted based on the degrees per step on the stepper motors... then lists of all coordinates were pumped in for a given part and it cut it out of metal blocks... pretty cool stuff -
Super SpartaDOS Cartridges Pre-order
_The Doctor__ replied to Dropcheck's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
okay so the one with the shell has two switches on it and the one without the shell has no switches? What are the major differences... The real time clock code in the popular terminal programs do not require drivers.... will they still work with driver of this cart? How does the supplied driver affect memory... does it swap out the built in support of x or does it simply add on and raise mem lo? can I turn off x and still use the real time clock with real dos, pro dos, or other dos for that matter? Can I use this with my express cart and still switch back and forth with other orion/icd type carts the way the tower of power used to? ie rtime to spartax to express to other cart on top of express to last cart at top of stack/ cart switching logic preserved.... not looking to power cycle everytime I go in or out of a stacked cart... -

Interview questions for Bill Wilkinson?
_The Doctor__ replied to Savetz's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I feel like I just got gut punched so hard that I can't breathe..... I am so very sorry Bill lost his battle with cancer and the complications from it being blood based. The loss of such a good hearted charitable man of such wisdom not only in computers but in life itself makes the world a much poorer place. I hope you can take comfort in the fact that he enriched the lives of so many people directly in his presence or indirectly thru his works. Bill will truely be with us forever as his writings, coding, and conversations are remembered. He continues to power our machines and our minds.... a beloved member of our community always... A friend and fellow -
In the late 80's early 90's many televisions had s video, composite and great dot pitch sharp had a few monitor class televisions as did goldstar, nec, proscan, radioshack..JVC but NEC had something in their composite only monitors for a few years that loved the 130XE, wonderful display without hacking things up much at all.... Perfectly readable 80 col and proper color artifacting ..... no banding ....Mack Truck supplied the monitor I used.... I ran the monitor till it died in 2001. Quite a few stores had the NEC monitor for displaying the Atari in the Lehigh Valley and with good reason.. Someone Near Costa Rica should gift bryan with a nice mid to late 80's NEC composite color monitor....I think he deserves one and would appreciate it!

Wilmunder's Star Raiders II released
_The Doctor__ replied to Savetz's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
Oh come on.... warping in to a black hole or steering into a wrong location etc, happens in all games.... and since it likewise would happen in real life, it is perfect for a game.... at this rate just turn off all collision detection and anything that would cause harm... we can just fly thru space endlessly flitting about... no challenge no consequence... no reality.. just em being yeah that's it pretty floating pixel art... so cool. so calm... so booooring... Nope I want to shoot stuff and stuff to shoot me and running into crap to blow me up or me ramming into crap blowing it up! I wanna be immersed in the game just like Star Raiders originally did and just like this follow up Star Raiders does thank you very much! -
I just want to see if it produces a readable 80 col. display..... I fear the horrible dot pitch on the jvc monitor your using may not let us see how good this upgrade is.... the moire patterns tend to be the result of dot pitch and not bit crawl.. most of the better nec monitors do not have that problem... one more reason I hated commodores monitors... the dot pitch always mucked things up some of the lesser quality lcd tv's are a mess as well... keep the shielding on folks... it does matter... it keeps radio stations from mucking up data cassette audio... it keeps rf from radio stations affecting the Atari... It keeps ham radio cb and gprs from messing with the Atari and the Atari from messing with them...... I know alot of people don't care about others radio reception etc... but time and time again at least where I live... putting the shielding back on has solved alot of 'random' problems and noise issues.... it wasn't just put on for no reason or to make the fcc happy.... it helped you and your neighbors whether you realized it or not.....and rather than re hashing it all just look thru the years on atariage and see different discussions for and against the shielding... keeping at least the bottom half on and making the keyboard metal connected to shield ground is as close to a decent compromise as I have seen.. although some have foil backed the inside of the case after having tossed the original shield to solve their problems... you never know when some new tower radio device wifi tv system will go live in your area with some new standard and you no longer have the shields to deal with it. Been at this forever.. shields up! best strategy ever.

NEC monitor, color composite, mono speaker only, 130XE, sometimes with an XF usually just store demo cart and a couple of joysticks.... That is what electronics boutique had set up.... Hess's department stores later re-purposed them with other Atari stuff on them -
Wilmunder's Star Raiders II released
_The Doctor__ replied to Savetz's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I love the fact if you screw up, just like in real life...... you can pay the price... in fact I have emergency warped in star trek games and exploded or otherwise due to various obstacles, meteorites etc... this makes the game wonderful in that respect to me... I think this form of insta-kill is perfect in star raiders!
