The answer is YES, most any rs232 AT modem should work, it should auto sync or be configured to talk to the Atari at the highest rate your rverter, pr, 850, mio, bbox can handle with handshaking turned on. the modem itself should have handshaking turned on and allow for immediate interrupt. the modem can connect at its highest rate to whoever you call or calls you. The buffering and handshaking will keep you moving. make sure handshaking is set for both computer to modem and modem to modem!

These practices are hurting Atari more than helping, most people have bought Atari's current batch of offerings in the software world in part because of the active Atari retro community and their caring support of the classic Atari. The retro gaming community has always actively promoted their offering, in fact I would not have most of the Atari branded pc software and nintendo Atari branded software had it not been for someone in the retro gaming community telling me about it. Atari could advertise with and help the people who have done them the best advertising of all, word of mouth. This group of people have helped to keep the name and reputation of Atari alive, in fact without some of the careful preservation efforts no one would have an idea what the games looked like, how they played or were even about. They are in many cases the only source for base line material to re introduce or make/remake games Atari now sells/licences/brands on the newer machines. If it were not for the old machines and the homebrew/hobbiests I would not be buying what I have for the Nintendo or my Windows based machines. The old machine offering have not hurt the new offerings it has driven me to purchase the new and re introduced products on the new machines. Atari is about to lose me after and I have been with them since 1978 thru all the transitions and changes. Do they not realize what this is going to cost them? Everybody should call and complain to every Atari phone number and write to every available address about this. Fill the mailboxes digital and physical, fill the voice mail channels for every level of the company, be it marketing, sales, financial, of legal.

please post all addresses and numbers and get this info out to everyone, the number of people getting bullied and pushed out is growing, the only way to keep Atari from destroying itself is if the community once again steps in and straightens this out. Point them in the correct direction. This protest will be effective and needs to be spread to all the online communities. If we do nothing most retro sites will be gones and Atari itself is in financially shakey grounds. Only the lawyers appear to be making money as the company is bleading dry.

Everyone Should shower Sheddy with donations... His work on this game is incredible and made a games possible that would never have been accomplished over the last 6 or so years happen.. He truely has made the inovations and pushed the Atari the way it was meant to be. I vote Sheddy coder of the YEAR!

Dang I played the crap out of this game I thought the speed was the way the game was meant to be played... Never thought it was an oversight on the timing since I purchased the game. Now electraglide is one that needs a little timer adjustment.....

I had a supra/avatex that did 2400 over the sio/ no problems at all it had a little grey box like a half pack of cigarettes that was in the middle of the sio line. later I used the same setup with a 4800 baud modem no problem.... then I scored a mio at 9600 baud it worked fine so did my 850.... then we got the black box and a usr courrier ran express pro and it shut the screen down and served ansi pages no problems at 19200. then we set the flow control and buffered the sends and receives setting the modem for immediate interrupt. serving the pages from ram disks and letting the modem buffer in that fashion allowed for a decent experience. If you did not set up the modem properly when some hit ctrl-c or escape they had to wait for the buffer to empty and that would make the bbs seem sluggish and annoying. The little 8 bit out served my friend Daves PC eight ways to sunday and he was using wildcat or some such at the time if I remember correctly. I did lend the modem to him at some point and he still was not pleased with it. Then we took the modem to Allentown and set up Parallel Dimension using the courrier and the modified bbs pro and that ran for years and years. The Tyrant modded the hardware and he was meticulous... I still admire his work....

Redesigning Molecular Dynamics for GPUs and GPU Clusters
Bio: Scott is a principal engineer on the CUDA software team at NVIDIA. Scott developed the first molecular modeling system for home computers, Genesis, in 1987, Folderol, the distributed computing project targeted at the protein folding problem in 2000, and BattleSphere, a networkable 3D space shooter for the Atari Jaguar the same year. Surprisingly, all three of these efforts shared a common codebase. More recently, he ported the [email protected] codebase to CUDA, achieving a 5x speedup over previous efforts, and which currently accounts for ~2.6 petaFLOPs of the project's computational firepower, and he is in the final stages of porting AMBER to CUDA as well. In a previous life, he picked up a B.S. in biology from Siena College and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Pennsylvania State University. In addition, he has written chapters for ShaderX and GPU Gems 3 and co-edited a book on computational methods for protein structure prediction.
They always seem to have their roots with Atari some way shape or form...

Yeah prices are high right now. I've taken to messaging sellers with really stupid prices (a 65XE + tape deck £1000.00 buy it now?????)
Perhaps I should sell off all my stuff and pay off the mortgage.
I see the same type prices, and I would swear no one is going for that type money. not sure but maybe the sellers are looking for a realy dumb person that would pay that.
This is the same shill false bid stuff that they did to the Jaguar stuff, In an effort to drive the prices up. Watch the bidding history and follow the people that correspond. People who have Atari stuff use the ebay system to get prices and set their prices accordingly. A local was doing just this in my area and was frustrated that items did not sell or someone makes a promise to buy or bids it up and then it never comes to be. The community should simply avoid these 'sellers' and leave comments to them in the questions are so everyone can read it. Maybe that can discourage this behaviour. Don't sell to these guys, state in the auction... something like... no dealers or proxy bids please. I insist the Atari hardware software go to an honest user of the aforementioned goods.
Let's make this a strong community of haves, not a community of have nots!

Tomasz Lewandowski, known as Levi from Samar group (years ago on Atari demoscene), just returned to Atari hobby with new game "TLC". This is project started years ago and finished now. You can read more about on AtariOnline.pl, use Google translator button to read in English.

Not too shabby! just needs a little tlc yet, the screen crash in ntsc in opening screen should be an easy enough fix, maybe widen the map/course/track and/or stretch it out to help soften the control problems making it easy at first then slowly tighten up each time a course completes to add difficulty until you end up at this expert level we see right now.

Hi all, got this out of a box lot of Atari repair parts and stuff some years ago. came in a little manila envelope and have no idea what it would be used for. White wire end out of pic is just open.

Looks like it converts ac to dc based on the direction of the diodes and current limiting resistors, the the resistor/cap off the center looks to filter some ripple/noise.

The Alps plotter engine that the 1020 uses (along with many other inexpensive 80s plotters) was a problematic design from the beginning, and it hasn't aged well at all. The paper roller is driven by a pair of motors, with very tiny plastic gears that have been cracking and breaking from age, and I think that's probably the cause of your issue rather than the power supply. It happens to all 1020 printers; if yours hasn't gone bad yet, it probably will before long whether you use it regularly or not.
I wish there was a source for replacement gears, but I haven't found one yet. The box full of spare plotter mechanisms that I picked up from Electronics Goldmine (back when they still had them for 50 cents each) yielded about four intact drive gears, and I used them to repair both of my 1020 printers. Once those gears go, I don't know what I'll do with them. Fortunately, APE offers a 1020 emulation feature, so you can at least see what the output looks like, and print it out on a modern inkjet printer if you want it in hardcopy.
there are many places that still sell gears, but you need to slide one off the printer and send it to them to match it up, I use to glue them back together and clamp them right on the rod, lasts for years and breaks in the same place eventually.

I've been a SpartaDOS X fan and user since 1989 and to me nothing can touch it. Yes - it's complicated as well as being poweful - but the fact of the matter is that much of that complexity is unobtrusive (the memory overheads are small given that the OS is on a cartridge) and you can quite happily get away with DIR, COPY, etc. On an expanded memory machine the "stock" settings yield an impressively low MEMLO and then you can just get on with what you're doing. The minor quibbles I had with the original cart in 1989 have all been addressed, and the fact that the SpartaDOS file system does away with the awful daisychained sectors used by DOS 2.x and MyDOS makes it the only choice for me. Add to this the fact it's still being actively developed and costs nothing, and it becomes unbeatable.
And if you're a programmer, it gets better. SDX has a wealth of "library" functions which mean your executable can call the ROM routines, keeping the base code small. If you want to play with virtual memory and overlays: it's all there for you. The only thing missing is a good English translation of the programming manual, and English docs for MADS.
There were a few incompatibility issues back in 1989: I could never get the Atari Macro Assembler to run with SDX, for example. MyDOS was then a useful option. I haven't tried AMAC with the latest SDX releases, although I have no real use for that assembler nowadays.
Don't forget SDX has a menu that works now, if you so choose.
The manual page system helps all those who need to know what the commands do making it simple even for my kids to learn now!
Simply put, It is awesome!
BTW I use mypicodos hispeed, just seems to run any software that gives me a hard time so now I often default to using it to run stuff first try from ape and later I figure out what's compatible with the other os's.

I understand i so, that the AtariMax SIO2PC (USB-Edition) don't works with (generally) SIO2PC-Software like AspeQT, it works only with APE.Yes, this is correct.
Me interested the reason, why it should only works with APE. It is a Design-Problem (no FTDI-Chip) because it is any earlier development, or have it a not disclosed USB-Communicationprotocol? Is it a so special Device, that exist no generally virtual COM-Driver?The Atarimax SIO2PC USB is not just a simple USB-to-serial adapter but it contains a microcontroller that handles the timing critical parts of the SIO protocol (plus some other stuff like tape interfacing/control etc). This makes operations much more reliable, but - unfortunately - the interface uses a proprietary undocumented protocol which makes it (next to) impossible to use it with other software than APE.

Just a place to start. wireless usb devices are said to be plug and play with the sio2pc usb, maybe if one watches the wireless traffic at a slow rate some answers will reveal themselves.

The "Phone Police" - that reminds me of my favorite WKRP episode where Johnny Fever was panicking that they phone police were coming after him.
The phone police tracked your ringer equivalency load as well, they still print that info on some phones today.
Back when you had the numbers listed on the BBS for phreaking, all you needed was the trace test number. Dial the trace test number then the code, rising tone leave it alone, falling down go to town. It was that simple. You could also make/receive calls using homemade box that did not let the voltage drop on the line so the exchange did not register the call went thru.

but obviously it works with A8... but I am with you... make the DIS6502 file compile perfectly and then do the patches directly in the source code... 
The Intro cool, art well done, digital sound is sweet.
I am able to play loading thru my picodos, No white line across top. What resembles green player missile line 1/3 of the way from the left side of screen on game playfield is the same color as my ship on grid. Using 130XE NTSC standard. FluffyFlossie Sheep!. Some grahics 0 text during load. All else looks on track. Nice!

with the EMU the scroll up seems not to work, ala CNTL+up arrow, but SHIFT+up arrow jumps to top of screen.
Should add also this only happens after CNTL+K to set screen colors.

EDIT: Fixed. Vector at end of colour change display list was one byte instead of two. Thus CTRL+K command was causing LSB of cursor up command (which immediately follows the display list vector) to be overwritten.

might this also cause the line count to jump from 0 to 65534 or some high number close to that? I've witnessed the line count do that twice when using the up arrow combinations
